To think that mp’s defecting to another party shouldn’t be allowed?

So Christian Wakeford has defected to labour over the whole Boris fiasco.

Fair enough, he wants no part in it and wants out. However, when people vote for an mp they vote for a party, not an individual. Therefore an elected mp defecting to the opposition is essentially giving a seat to that opposition without the vote of his constituents, who hadn’t wanted that party in place Because they didn’t vote for them.

So if he wants out, he should resign from his constituency so that his constituents can decide whether or not they want labour in power or not.

I mean, if you lived in a Labour constituency and your mp became a Tory I presume people might have something to say about that (I would,) so surely it should just be a blanket policy?

You do vote for the candidate, but I know what you mean. Many people didn’t vote for their Labour candidate because they didn’t like Corbyn.

WRT this defection: Christian Wakeford’s voting history is disgusting. To think this scrote has defected to the Labour Party and has been welcomed with open arms, but someone like JC has been vilified…well, the Labour Party isn’t where my vote will be going, even though my MP is Labour and I’m in a Labour strong hold.

Forgot to add: yes defecting shouldn’t be allowed. There should be a by-election.

Funny, I live in Bury South and local social media chat is very mixed, some pleased, some disappointed. Local media very similar mix of views.

Incidentally our last mp, Ivan Lewis, resigned from the Labour Party to be independent. There wasn't a by election then either.

@Blossomtoes

Interestingly They were interviewing his constituents on the news this morning and they’re livid saying that none of them want to be in a labour constituency.

It is interesting, given that it had been Labour for decades and the Tory majority there is miniscule.

There are probably journalists interviewing different people and only reporting on one side or the other

Because i watched a new channel yesterday and they had constituents that seemed to think it was good that he’d changed sides

One lady said she didnt vote but she’d be sure to vote for him next time

Actually OP you're wrong again. He only won from labour by 402 votes so actually a significant proportion wanted to be in a labour constituency.

It was only a marginal seat so people probably not so bothered, where we are MP has been there years with a large majority so it would cause more drama
