To think that Angela Rayner could be PM one day.

I just think she's a breath of fresh air. She's real and authentic, she's come from a poor upbringing. She was her mums carer age 9, was a teenager mum, worked in social care and worked her way up the ladder. I just find it amazing that she's achieved all of this from how her life started. If she was running for PM and the next general election I will definitely be voting for her.

Angela Rayner is a caricature of working class people, not a real representation. She is also a caricature of what sexist people would call a ‘hysterical woman’. She absolutely cannot hold a coherent argument, seems to shout ‘oi scum’ at anyone she doesn’t like, as though she is on Jeremy Kyle.
The fact that people put someone on a pedestal for having a regional accent and a ‘backstory’ really lowers the bar for working class people. If Angela Rayner is considered the ceiling or aspiration for working class people, perhaps people should raise their bar and instead of patronising working class people.

inheritancetrack · 19/01/2022 21:49

Sorry, she's an awful politician. Foot constantly in mouth, bull in a china shop attitude and a huge inferiority complex she feels can be overcome by pulling everyone down.

inheritancetrack · 19/01/2022 21:51

Labour had one no hoper in Jeremy Corbin please don't give us another

Yes definitely Lauren, the Catherine Tate character. She even looks like her

@LarryTheLurker

Coarse, aggressive, vulgar and ignorant, she is a divisive class warrior and a stain on the House of Commons. The 'many people' whose lives she allegedly understands are a small and unrepresentative minority whose concerns are already well looked after by others more sensible and mature.
Nailed it. IMO

Also nailed it.

I doubt it. The public don’t have the stomach for anyone slightly different or normal. They’ve been conditioned to like the same kind of candidate from an advantaged background.

@Shade17

Interesting that my post was deleted when I simply used her own language to describe her and nothing more.
It's seems like a few of ours were. Funny that 🙄
DottyDoge · 20/01/2022 01:10

Utterly unprofessional and rough as heck

I can’t comment too much on Rayner’s qualities as a politician, but it’s clear that some of the opposition to her is informed by snobbery. This is why the Tories are the “natural party of government”. Lots of people like the clipped accents and the experience at Public schools and Oxbridge. To counter this, I like to think of achievements of Ernest Bevin and Nye Bevan.

You’ve worded that much better than I did, thank you. I kept stumbling with phrasing it and typing and retyping because I’m tired Grin

Thankfully this will never happen

hayley037 · 20/01/2022 01:33

Generally English voters would rather doff their cap to those who went to Eton and the likes of Rees-Mogg. We would rather have a cabinet of MP's who vote against things like removing cladding for Grenfell type tower blocks or making it illegal to save people drowning in the channel so I can't see Angela Rayner ever getting near Downing St.

End of the day she wants to improve the lives of those at the lowest end of society and see less injustice but there's no real appetite for that here.

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/01/2022 01:33

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Completely agree with QueenPeony's post.
As do I.

Yvette Cooper for me.

sst1234 · 20/01/2022 01:34

@NiceTwin

I find her most obnoxious. I sincerely hope she doesn't.

She was an embarrassment at PMQ's the other week.

And today. Waving across the aisle like she’s a year nine rebel. It’s like she wandered into the commons by mistake when she was actually looking for the detention classroom. The woman is an embarrassment and I wish people would stop embarrassing actual high achieving working class women by giving her this label. Most professional women would be horrified to have her as a role model, she lowers standards so much.

“The woman is an embarrassment and I wish people would stop embarrassing actual high achieving working class women by giving her this label”

In what world is becoming Member of the Privy Council and Deputy Leader of the Opposition not an actual achievement?

Vbree · 20/01/2022 04:32

I really hope not!

I think most people want an MP who knows what he or she is doing. I'd prefer an MP who understands the strategic importance of Ukraine, or a qualified lawyer who understands the legalities of the fire standards laws relating to Grenfell and can actually help bring the negligent companies to court.

When I hear someone calling a whole group of people Scum, I see someone who has nothing intelligent or constructive to say.

And that applies to all MPs in all parties.

DottyDoge · 20/01/2022 05:05

This thread has really unearthed the resentment that working class women face.

On the one hand, Rayner is resented by those born into privilege simply because of her background. That’s enough.

On the other hand, she’s resented by those born into less privilege, for not aping the traditional route to success by doing well at school, getting into an elite university, changing her accent and getting into a competitive graduate scheme at a London consultancy or law firm.

And that makes her fit to run the country? That is exactly what is wrong with politicians that have very little related experience aside from "understanding" people I am afraid she isn't bright enough for me
OverByYer · 20/01/2022 06:04

I like her. Don’t think she’s PM material, but she’s a good MP and challenging the Patriarchy in parliament.
Judging by the misogyny on this thread though, she certainly won’t be PM.

Exactly this. God forbid anyone outside the ‘acceptable norms’ should have a go. This thread is really sad to read.
ohfook · 20/01/2022 06:09

Absolutely not. The press are already portraying her in a certain way, so she'll never be given a fair crack of the whip. I like her I think she's fearless and has strong opinions. She clearly hasn't been media trained yet which I like but she would possibly need if she really wanted to start playing the game.

ohfook · 20/01/2022 06:11

@AlternativePerspective

Imagine an election where your choice of leader was between Boris Johnson and Angela Rayner. 😱😱😱
I'd find that a pretty easy choice to be honest. Someone who is a proven liar vs someone who maybe could do with learning how to sugarcoat the truth a bit.
