Where does most of the porn originate?

Loveismyfoodanddrink · 19/01/2022 18:58

100% yes, we should.

LosingMySh1t · 19/01/2022 19:01

I watch porn. I would be happy with this ban. Bring it on.

When my kids are old enough to be on the Internet I will put a blocker on, so we all can't watch it.

Brogues · 19/01/2022 19:07

I’ve said no because I just don’t think it’s workable and it’s not a ban on porn, it’s a ban on porn for those under 18 only. Just as in the olden days with magazines and videos it’ll just be forwarded on my older brothers etc.

Norgie · 19/01/2022 19:45

Unfortunately there's no real way to ban is because as others have already said, kids can get round it by using a VPN or by using their phones and a ' warm ' connection. Kids are more techno savvy than we give them credit for.
The other problem is with the age verification, shy of someone having to verify their age with photographic proof, such as a passport or driving licence, then it's just a fake birth year, which is no proof at all, and again kids are savvy.
The problem with porn itself today is twofold. One is the content, which varies from mild straight vanilla sex to degrading violent stuff, with 'teens', paedophillia, forced sex, anal and god knows what, and it's everywhere! Even mainstream TV doesn't escape it.
The second problem is the accessibility to this stuff. Yes, once upon not so long ago it would have been a mucky mag from the top shelf or a blue movie from the bloke in the pub, which in comparison to today's stuff was pretty tame.
Now we have the other problem of young girls being coerced into sexual acts because, due to porn they think what they're seeing is normal as they have nothing to compare it to, as it's all they've seen.
Not too many years ago, anal sex was literally unheard of among a straight couple, mainly because it was illegal and because no one owned up to doing it, even if they were. Now it's in literally every porn clip and so has become 'normal'.
The same applies to boys, but with the addition of them pressuring the girls into certain acts, because again, they have nothing to compare it to. Therefore he will pressure a girl into doing anal because it's 'normal' and everyone does it, in his mind.
It's damaging and dangerous, very much so to a young impressionable mind.
That said, I have no idea what the answer is to stem the tide and turn things around, except keep talking to your kids.

fizzypop100 · 19/01/2022 19:50

As for adults, they should have to prove identity That would stop a lot of addictions

MorganKitten · 19/01/2022 20:05

Kids will find away around this and will probably end up finding worse.

Beautiful3 · 19/01/2022 20:24

Yes, agreed. Could you start an online petition? I'd sign it.

Lockheart · 19/01/2022 20:43

@WinterDeWinter PornHub removed something like 80% of their content because of possible child abuse. Eighty per cent.

That isn't quite true. PH removed all content from unverified users (about 80%) following criticism from processors like MasterCard that their checks weren't stringent enough and that lack of checks was allowing dodgy content through.

It isn't the case that 80% of their content was possible child abuse.

D0lphine · 19/01/2022 21:00

If you make it difficult to access mainstream porn (on porn hub for example) it may mean teens download Tor and look for porn on the dark web instead. Obviously all sorts of illegal dangerous shit on there.

WinterDeWinter · 19/01/2022 21:31

Oh man, so many excuses.
There will never be a perfect way - you have to be really invested in porn one way or another to keep pushing this 'it's not a full solution' line.

Mischance · 19/01/2022 22:38

No-one is suggesting that it is easy to keep porn away from young people and children - that does not mean that we should not try.

The principle of the damaging effect on children and the need to keep them safe should inspire us all to be contacting our MPs and wanting to know what they are doing about it. We need to keep the topic alive and not let the legislators sweep it under the carpet because it is difficult to do.

It's not that it's not a 'full solution'

It's that it is no solution at all, and you will get better protection for your DC by using device-based blockers.

Dissimilitude · 19/01/2022 23:45

Completely unenforceable.

Free VPNs are a Google search away, and once activated your internet traffic is essentially completely hidden from your ISP.

AutomaticMoon · 20/01/2022 02:14

VPN would void this measure, unfortunately. There’s a problem with the violence in the thumbnails and titles, when I checked a mainstream one last year, the titles were extremely vile and hateful.

nalabae · 20/01/2022 06:12

Agree

Blocking the 5 sites will just divert traffic to other places. Mastercard and Visa stopping use of their cards on Pornhub in 2020 because of child abuse content was probably the best tactic so far to trying to tackle the issue. It didn't solve the issue but I believe it triggered policy changes at Pornhub.
fizzypop100 · 20/01/2022 09:55

For kids, a good parent control app will block private VPN access !

WinterDeWinter · 20/01/2022 11:52

@fizzypop100

Exactly. We need all these things. And, as I said earlier, one of the damaging aspects of the psychological impact on kids of porn is that their access to it is, in their eyes, endorsed by parents/adults/society.

And - even if it were nearly ineffective - why do you all care if some corporate rape-deniers making billions from porn have to pay a couple of million for effective age verification processes? Is it because... men would have to identify themselves as porn users I wonder? Because if not, why is it any skin off your nose that these companies have to comply with existing law about exposing children to sexual behaviour?

WinterDeWinter · 20/01/2022 11:57

@GlacindaTheTroll Why do you promote the idea that this is a zero sum game or binary? We need all these things in play, because they each address a facet of children's access to porn.

Norgie · 20/01/2022 13:16

@Fizzypop100 I agree, but unfortunately there are parents who don't give a shit, and it's the kids of those parents who show content to the kids whose parents do ☹️

fizzypop100 · 21/01/2022 17:13

And Twitter need to get their act together too

letsghostdance · 21/01/2022 17:17

Nope. No to censoring the internet. Looking after children is the parents' job.

Slingingcontest · 21/01/2022 17:20

Yes it's not perfect but it is a start and I think it is making an important public statement too.

It's not a start, it's utterly pointless

And it's sending the message 'we would rather give you smoke and mirrors than solid advice on using blockers, providing education and urging supervision'
