Men outside swearing at me

Pretty sure not being unreasonable I'm just posting because it shook me up a bit. I was eating my lunch at my dining table which faces onto the street and my boyfriend rang me, I was speaking with the phone on speaker as I prefer that so I was holding my phone up speaking into the bottom.
A scrap van pulled up outside and they started messing around with what was in the back and a trolley fell out so they were rearranging it. They were right in front of my window so could see me sat there are kept looking over and laughing between them which was fine I dont really care but then one of them suddenly walked up to the window and gave me the 2 finger salute with both hands while laughing to the other one. I dont know if he thought I was filming them because I was holding my phone up I have a flip case so I couldnt have filmed from the way I was holding it iyswim so I didn't think about that but it really shook me. I have diagnosed anxiety disorder and hate any kind of confrontation (even speaking to a stranger on a phone makes me panic) so it has totally set me off and I am trying not to cry at this point (I realise I'm overreacting but it's very intimidating to me and horrible to be sat in my own home and have that happen). Boyfriend just laughed and said I should have just waved.

Genuine question - why do people chat on their phones on speaker and disturb everyone else with their conversation as opposed to holding it to their ears and not subjecting everyone else to their conversation? Not having a go, I just wondered.
She was in her own house, who was she disturbing?

Get a nut curtain or some privacy frosting in that window, I'd hate to think anyone could peer in whilst I'm eating. Hope you feel better soon

Damn-I would've searched for the company's name on their vehicle or clothing and then raised holy hell to them. I did that once when a landscaping truck driver cut me off in a work zone, failed to signal and drove at twice the speed limit.I got a personal email of apology from the business owner. You should be safe in your own home from bullies. I have a loud barking dog and would've enjoyed the barking at those two thugs on my property.

@RedCandyApple

How weird of them , but yes it sounds like they thought you was filming them, I do think crying sounds extreme though
You don't have anxiety then like the op I guess.

Unfortunately it was an unmarked van and normal clothes, I'm not sure how it works but I see people driving around and collecting scrap metal I dont know if these are businesses or just people who collect it and trade it in for some cash? Probably the latter I guess to be behaving like that. Thankfully I've chilled out now and just think they are a pair of bellends picking on a woman alone in her house. I may invest in net curtains and a loud dog Grin thank you all.for holding my hand while I was a bit upset/anxious

That sounds horrible and you shouldn’t have to put up with that anywhere, especially your own home.

I have noticed that people do seem to be more confrontational. One person does something very innocent yet another person will see that as a sleight - every morning as I’m walking home from dropping DD off at school I walk past another family rushing towards the school. One morning before Christmas, as this family and I passed each other I looked at my watch (I was actually having a delivery arriving between 9-10 and just wanted to know how much time I had to get home) and the mum had a go at me for judging her time-keeping (I couldn’t have given a rats arse about her time-keeping). I think some people think that everything is about them and how could anyone else do anything that isn’t about them. It’s come to something when are minding your own business and that’s offensive to someone else.

MintJulia · 17/01/2022 18:17

Just ignore them, or close the blinds. They are stupid, ignorant and irrelevant. You have more important things to do

Theunamedcat · 17/01/2022 18:21

I know what you were doing my dd talks on the phone like this there is no way he could reasonably believe you were filming he was just being a twat

Op was in her own home.

I use speakerphone in public because my phones broken and will only work via speaker phone. Id rather my conversations be more private but alas, I'm not buying another phone Grin

This sounds like EXTREME anxiety I have suffered from anxiety but this is extreme, crying because someone gave you the middle finger?

Ok to clarify again I said I felt like crying I didnt actually cry. Also the reason it triggered my anxiety was because it made me feel.threatened which is a major trigger for me.due to growing up in a violent household and yes it is actually extreme anxiety for which I suffer frequent panic attacks despite years of therapy and meditation. Would you criticise someone with depression for staying in bed for days at a time and not showing because you consider it to be extreme? Mental health affects people differently and perhaps a little compassion wouldnt hurt particularly if you have experienced it yourself
