Total first world problems I realise. Have attached pics. Gah, I hate it! I don’t know exactly what I’m asking but aibu, and if not what should I do!

I don’t think it looks too bad, it is not my taste but there’s nothing really wrong with… however YANBU it is only your opinion that matters here OP Grin

MuthaFunka61 · 16/01/2022 09:16

Re-taping the edges is a great idea, possibly in a contrasting colour that could be repeated in plant pots and prints. It could look really stunning.

GattoFantastico · 16/01/2022 09:17

How about re-taping in a thinner width, or a two-colour tape? I think part of the problem is the wide brown taping emphasises the brown-ness

Summersdreaming · 16/01/2022 09:17

I think the two colours on the carpet are too similar. In your example pics they are contrasting colours which make the look, and yours aren't quite right. That said, I'm not sure I'd rip it up. Give it a few weeks? Unless you already have?

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 09:17

What sort of colour though? It feels like this blinking carpet doesn’t suit any other colour!

I don’t like it but if the bannisters were painted cream or white, it would look better. I don’t like the brown and black bannisters either.

FangsForTheMemory · 16/01/2022 09:18

@ilkleymoorbartat

Does anyone else have any ideas of what kind of other carpet might work?

Thanks @Bonnieonthelam I agree about the too many different neutrals. I think we he only thought about painting that bannister is if we ever changed the downstairs floorboards.

I've got seagrass matting on mine and I love it. Hard wearing and looks great.
ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 09:18

Another reference, but when I tried these colours they seemed too oatmealy. Now realise I should have probably gone with that.

Black tape on the carpet and paint the bannister black. The wood just doesn't look right on it. It's distracting to the eye. If you had painted the spindles white it wouldn't be as distracting.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 16/01/2022 09:20

It’s not to my taste but it’s fairly inoffensive. It looks smart but also quite formal. If it bothers you enough then I would change it if you can. It will bother you every time you go up and down those stairs otherwise.

GoodnightGrandma · 16/01/2022 09:20

I like it.

inappropriateraspberry · 16/01/2022 09:20

I really like it. It ties I. With the bannisters, spindles and floorboards.
I think if you put a picture up on the wall that could brighten it up. It looks plain, but not ugly or boring.

GattoFantastico · 16/01/2022 09:20

This sort of idea?

That is a bit too orange for me personally, I like the first example pic you posted, a cooler neutral with black border, but that's just me. I like your bannister the way it is too.

Woofins · 16/01/2022 09:21

Think some plants, photos/art hanging on the wall will do alot for the space. I like the stair runner but I don't love the wall colour if I'm honest. But I think adding final touches will make the space. The carpet is only one element and I think it look looks good.

Summersdreaming · 16/01/2022 09:21

Sorry that was to the previous stairs pic ^

This is the exact thing I would have gone for against your staircase and floorboards, I think it would have tied everything in well.
RussianSpy101 · 16/01/2022 09:23

I would try and resell and buy another OP. I know exactly what you mean, I wouldn’t leave it down.

userxx · 16/01/2022 09:23

How long has it been down ? It might grow on you with time.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 16/01/2022 09:25

I like the runner but I think your bannister combination of black/pine is hideous! Just paint them all black!

Unprecedentedusername · 16/01/2022 09:25

It’s the dreary colour on the walls that is the problem. You need more depth of colour and a warm red based neutral would work well. Oxford stone or London Stone. Also agree with PPs some plants and pictures would soften the space.

Riverlee · 16/01/2022 09:25

I agree, a nice picture of the walls will draw your eyes up upwards and away from the carpet?

Also, a picture on the wall downstairs by the door?

winter12345 · 16/01/2022 09:26

I think the issue is the stark black of the bannisters and the white contrast of the stairs. I'd mute the staircase a bit and it will all go much better. I am not a fan of bright white though, all my woodwork is in white tie which is an off white.

NewHouseNewMe · 16/01/2022 09:26

The clash is coming from the black spindles on the bannister, the mahogany handrail, white floorboards, white window ledge and a brown runner carpet.
Brown and black are not a great mix.
If you want to keep the carpet (I would - it’s fine) try painting the black spindles brown or white.
