To think my neighbour stole my laptop?

This is going to sound a bit ridiculous, but I promise it's true, unless I've lost my mind.

I went away for three weeks. During this time I asked my NDN to look after my cat - I left all the food, litter, poo bags etc.

I offered them £10 per day to do this, however, they refused and said I could repay the favour one day. We are quite friendly, she's a teacher and he works for a bank - both late thirties. Not that it matters, just so I'm not dripfeeding.

I take in a lot of Amazon deliveries for them and they would do the same for me.

I got home today and my laptop is gone - I always keep it in the same place on my desk. It was 100% there before I left. Thinking they might have moved it for whatever reason (fine) I text her to ask.

She told me I better not be accusing her of stealing it because she would never do that. I said I wasn't saying that at all, just a bit perplexed as I didn't take it with me.

Now she hasn't replied, but she's read my message.

Do you think she let it out on airbnb? Smile

GracielaSabrocita · 18/01/2022 19:25

I feel like I'm in limbo now - I am going between confronting her/ calling the police/ letting it go. I don't know what to do.

Report it to the police. And get on their case if they don't contact your neighbour. Although they probably won't actually get your laptop back.

In the future be very wary about lending house keys to anyone.

StarWa · 18/01/2022 19:27

I can see her light on. I've had a glass of wine.

I'm contemplating just going over, but I'm nervous. Haha 🤪

Can you Track it?

EmmaH2022 · 18/01/2022 19:29

You have more patience than I do

I'd have said to her at the start "I'm calling the police, can I pass on your number- they might want to ask if you saw anything unusual in the area while I was away".

I do know someone whose stolen items were recovered but she had marked them with that special ink. We couldn't believe the stuff was found!

StarWa · 18/01/2022 19:31

@EmmaH2022 I know, I just don't want to ruin our relationship if she's got nothing to do with it. I feel bad, but at the same time, my laptop has still disappeared! ☹️

"Sorry, something came up, another time!"

I'd be going to the police now, and I'd be telling her as much. Well dodgy.

But it won't spoil your friendship - the laptop is missing and I'd report it.

Freecuthbert · 18/01/2022 19:43

I think it will only spoil your friendship if she did it...!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 18/01/2022 19:44

Sorry ndn I meant to drop this round to you yesterday but this laptop business put it clean out of my head. Anyway, thank you so much for taking care of cat, I better get back as I've got to log incident with police. What a nightmare!! See you soon x

IntermittentParps · 18/01/2022 19:58

Have you got the ‘Find my’ app or similar?

Yessss do this F2F
Blue4YOU · 18/01/2022 20:00

If you are going to report it to the police, I’d strongly suggest you do not give her a heads up!
I bet she’s seen the thread OP.
If I were you I’d pop round with the Prosecco

Oh that’s good! Do that. Smoke her out.

MaggieFS · 18/01/2022 20:04

Well you possibly can't claim on your insurance if you don't have a crime number, so mentioning that you think you'll have to call the police isn't a bad place to start. Any iffy characters have access to her house who might have borrowed your key?

Tilltheend99 · 18/01/2022 20:08

I sounds most likely that she gave the keys to someone else to check on the cats and she thinks they took the laptop which is why ‘something came up’ last night as she was desperately trying to get it back.

Even if you could afford to forget about the laptop you probably shouldn’t as who knows how much private info they will have access to. Do you keep all your accounts signed in for example?

I wonder why she was (purportedly) initially intending to come round though?
echt · 18/01/2022 20:13

While tracking the laptop is still the best first thing to do, I think it's unlikely the NDN stole it, more likely some accident/keys lent/nicked.

She's a teacher and would lose her job for theft, so a laptop isn't worth the risk.

tearinghairout · 18/01/2022 20:14

Did you see that thread where things went missing and then.just turned up, out of the blue? I think that's happened. Wink
Seriously, her stealing it doesn't make any sense! Could your DP/someone else have hidden it?

shoopashoop · 18/01/2022 20:15

I’m thinking same as PP

shoopashoop · 18/01/2022 20:16

Maybe she was ‘popping over’ to try sneak it back in the house?! 🕵️‍♀️

Yeah this I'm afraid. Not sure what else you can do at this stage.
Wheresthebeach · 18/01/2022 20:28

Apart from change your locks!

LillyMac500 · 18/01/2022 20:33

Commenting so I can follow what happens! This and the Slimming World thread about the owl and the muller lights is the best evening entertainment I’ve had in ages 🤣

ZorbaTheHoarder · 18/01/2022 20:37

Go round and ask if you can borrow her laptop for a while, as yours has gone missing?
