To think my neighbour stole my laptop?

StarWa · 15/01/2022 19:35

This is going to sound a bit ridiculous, but I promise it's true, unless I've lost my mind.

I went away for three weeks. During this time I asked my NDN to look after my cat - I left all the food, litter, poo bags etc.

I offered them £10 per day to do this, however, they refused and said I could repay the favour one day. We are quite friendly, she's a teacher and he works for a bank - both late thirties. Not that it matters, just so I'm not dripfeeding.

I take in a lot of Amazon deliveries for them and they would do the same for me.

I got home today and my laptop is gone - I always keep it in the same place on my desk. It was 100% there before I left. Thinking they might have moved it for whatever reason (fine) I text her to ask.

She told me I better not be accusing her of stealing it because she would never do that. I said I wasn't saying that at all, just a bit perplexed as I didn't take it with me.

Now she hasn't replied, but she's read my message.

@StarWa how did it go?

GatoradeMeBitch · 18/01/2022 13:29

My guess is that the neighbour said her partner borrowed the laptop for some innocent reason and forgot to return it.

xILikeJamx · 18/01/2022 13:38

Reckon the neighbour took it and will try to sneak it back in the house at some point then ask a week later if you found it

Toottooot · 18/01/2022 13:40

Maybe she stole her phone last night too now she has no method of communication?

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 18/01/2022 13:43

I'm intrigued now.

SalsaLove · 18/01/2022 13:46

Obviously, the OP was having an affair with the neighbour’s DH and the neighbour decided to go onto the laptop to look for proof. In doing so, she spilled her tea all over the keyboard and took it to a friend who knows how to clean keyboards. Unbeknownst to the neighbour, her friend, whilst using the laptop, got caught in a local sting operation and now the OP is being arraigned at the Old Bailey. 🤷‍♀️

Excited101 · 18/01/2022 13:47

Op? Are you there?

YourenutsmiLord · 18/01/2022 13:52

I'll keep an eye on the papers in case a mystery murder and robbery of laptop appears.

!

I bet that's it!
Did she have a big handbag with her when she came round i wonder ......

Inthesameboatatmo · 18/01/2022 14:02

It's a very odd way to answer from the neighbour. Very defensive of you ask me , did she pop round op ?

RedFlagsAllOver · 18/01/2022 14:06

I think the Mexican House theif took it. Make sure you cancel the cheque op

Laiste · 18/01/2022 14:06

or the elderly Korean lady

Dasher789 · 18/01/2022 14:15

Did laptop or ndn turn up??

AcrossthePond55 · 18/01/2022 14:16

Hmmm, my theory is that OP is in actuality a serial killer and there was evidence on the laptop. NDN snuck a peek looking for gossip and came across incriminating evidence of crimes. Laptop is now with the police for a forensic search. If OP never comes back, it's because she has been arrested.

That's my working thesis, anyway.

In reality I think I'm going with the NDN having a 3rd party feed the cat. That person or someone with them stole the laptop. Maybe the reason she didn't show up yesterday is because she hasn't gotten the laptop back from the 3rd party and/or is too embarrassed to face OP.

My theory is based on one of my sons (as a teen) had a friend with 'opportunistic sticky fingers'. Not objects, but we'd notice after he'd been here than any loose change or cash lying around would be gone, one year including my other son's birthday money. It was pretty obvious who it was.

Some posters are so good at this.

Whereismumhiding3 · 18/01/2022 14:32

I'm loving all the invented scenarios - whilst OP hasn't returned yet!

Can we do a wager ?

Evens : NDN asked a teen relative & friends to feed cat and a teen took laptop and some money

3:1 OP put laptop away in a drawer realising laptop could over heat whilst away if she left it out and is too embarrassed to say 'found it in a drawer'

5:1 OPs family out laptop away before they left

6:1 NDN left door unlocked and a burglar nicked it

9:1 NDN locked cat in study by mistake and cat peed on laptop so NDN trying to fix it at local computer shop

10:1 NDN borrowed laptop and forgot to put it back (but it'd have a pin to access it? )

12:1 NDN came round last night shouted at OP for suggesting she'd taken it when all she'd done was feed the cat and OPs to work not knowing how to talk to MN to say, I might be wrong but feel terrible.

15:1 NDN Teenagers nicked OPs keys and had a party whilst OP was away. Laptop was moved or nicked then.

25:1 NDN nicked laptop and sold it to feed her crack habit

50:1 NDN had a nosey round the house and tidied whilst OP was away. It's in a drawer ...

100:1 NDN WFH at OPs desk whilst she was away as her own family are so noisy and she split coffee on laptop and it's at (same catpee rescuing) computer shop being rebooted

120:1 It's a mystery which we will never solve

What scenarios have I missed!
?!

Shapiro · 18/01/2022 14:35

Could the cat have knocked it off and it slid or the cat pushed it under the sofa?

SalsaLove · 18/01/2022 14:39

I could get behind the NDN selling it to feed her crack habitat.

Laiste · 18/01/2022 14:41

15:1 for me.

ND's kids/kid's mates.

HollowTalk · 18/01/2022 14:42

Did you hide it somewhere in case you were burgled? Under a cushion? Under the sofa? Under the spare room duvet?

That's a 46.61% overround you've got going on there, are you a professional bookie?
ShinyPikachu · 18/01/2022 14:50

It'll be found with that ironing board that disappeared a while back and the owner never did find out what happened to it.

Isaw3ships · 18/01/2022 14:54

Op has found the laptop where she stashed it under a pillow and now is too mortified to come and admit it…

purplecorkheart · 18/01/2022 14:58

140:1 Op brought the laptop on her trip and forgot it at airport security
