How do you get out of the bath?

Aibu to ask how you get out of the bath (if you are healthy with no disabilities)?

I’m not a weird bath perv. I let the water run out yesterday and couldn’t get out! I had to re-fill the bath. I can only get out by sitting sideways, getting onto my knees and climbing out from there.

I need to know if that’s normal or if it’s because I’m enormous at the moment. I can’t remember my slimmer days. They weren’t even that long ago!

Thank you. Sorry for odd aibu.

I would normally just stand up.

Sometimes I sit in the bath cross legged sideways on if I'm reading and the water is very hot. In that situation I pull plug and then still just stand up.

Now 8 months pregnant I need to push myself up to sitting from laying with a hand before standing.

I score 0 on @EatYourVegetables fitness test. I don't think its about fitness though, more agility. I haven't done any exercise for 3 years and it was quite easy.

Exhausteddog · 15/01/2022 09:49

I'm way too invested in this. I couldn't think how I get out so I just got in the bath to practise!Blush
I sit up into a cross legged position and push up from that (holding the side of the bath.)

Blinkingheckythump · 15/01/2022 09:50

@KewMummy87 I'm massively overweight (much more than you) and I have the same issue getting out of the bath. When I was pregnant I was in a narrower bath then my own and I literally could not get onto my knees as there wasn't room enough to roll over. I was laid there sobbing my heart out like a beached whale. There's zero chance of me getting up off the floor without having furniture to use. I have to loose weight and get fitter too. It's unbelievable how bad its got

Exhausteddog · 15/01/2022 09:53

I scored 0 on @EatYourVegetables test but I would hold the side of the bath while exiting just because it might be slippery.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/01/2022 09:54

We have handles so I just hold them and pull up. My knees are really dodgy.

VelvetChairGirl · 15/01/2022 09:58

I stand up, raise one leg to let it drip and wiggle my foot a bit, step out and repeat with the other leg/foot.

SaltedCaramelHC · 15/01/2022 11:52

I find this really hard too now, and my bath is quite narrow and shallow as it fits in a smaller alcove.

I'd really like to find a bow-fronted/D shape bath, to give a bit more room at the middle part, where it wouldn't conflict with other furniture but just stick out into the middle of the room, but I can't find any that are the right dimensions. There used to be one, but it's sold out and discontinued now, and all the ones I can find now are too long for the space!! Frustrating.

tcjotm · 15/01/2022 12:19

This really reassuring. I too have to roll over on to my knees to get out. Worse, since my wrists are dodgy I have to lean my weight on my forearm instead. Now I know I can’t blame it on my dodgy joints but on my weight 😂😂

I certainly could not go from standing to sitting easily. In fact, bank robbery scenes on TV make me quite anxious. I’d need a good few minutes to get down to the ground. I’m sure I’d thoroughly exasperate the robbers.

sueelleker · 15/01/2022 12:36

@LakieLady

I've got arthritis in my knees, so it's very hard for me to get up from sitting in the bath.

I used to get myself on to my knees, and then stand up, using the handles on the bath for support. However, I had a partial knee replacement 3 months ago and still can't kneel on that knee. I haven't had a bath since September.

Thankfully, I have a shower, so I'm not minging, but I'd love a soak in the bath.

I'm sorry to tell you, but I had a total knee replacement 10 years ago, and it's still tender when I kneel on it.
Musicalmistress · 15/01/2022 12:38

@KewMummy87 I'm seriously overweight & reckon I'd have the same problem! Currently I push up with my hands on the sides of the bath whilst drawing my knees up so I end up in a kind of crouching position. I then jam my knees against the side of the bath so I can move my hands forward a bit to allow me to push up to standing.
It's not pretty & I'm working on losing the weight but not willing to give up enjoying a lovely warm bath in the meantime x

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/01/2022 12:43

I thought you meant psychologically, which is my issue getting out of baths!

DressingPafe · 15/01/2022 12:48

Don’t unplug until I’m stood up

I watched a programme years ago about “easy” ways you can die at home and apparently a certain amount of people (no idea how many) have died by slipping on their way out of the bath, knocked themselves out and drowned in the bath water. It stayed with me, so now I always take the plug out prior to getting out.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 15/01/2022 12:50

I used to be able to push myself up. Now I am obese I have to roll round onto my knees and hoist one knee over the edge. Little things like this add up and you really notice them.

Cherrysoup · 15/01/2022 12:51

I’m very fat and have a mobility issue (accident). I put left hand just below the top of the bath, right hand on side, push up with totally bent knees. Our bath is non-slip, some special material, chosen for this after my accident.

Somethingsnappy · 15/01/2022 12:55

@EatYourVegetables

There’s a very similar test of fitness - can you go from standing upright to sitting on the floor, and back to standing upright, without using your hands for support on the floor or on your legs, and without using your knees. Every time your knee or hand touches the floor and every time your hand touches your leg you lose a point. The lower your score, the fitter you are.

I’m 40 and normal weight (towards to top of the normal range). My score used to be 0 when I was a bit lighter, is now 1, and was much higher when I was heavily pregnant. I think it really does depend on weight, a lot.

This is very interesting and has made a lot of fun for me, husband and four children. Of course, the kids' s ores were all zero Grin

I have to do that too.

However, I'm a bit overweight and older so I can't just pull myself up any more

I can do 0 if I try to, knees bent in front of me, rock up to a squat. Getting up from carpet as I would naturally I score a 1 as I go to one knee then the other foot.
HippeePrincess · 15/01/2022 13:24

I was seriously overweight this time last year, weighing 15 stone (95kg), and even then I could just stand straight up out the bath. However in my third trimester of my first pregnancy in my early 20's I got completely stuck in the bath and it was really horrible!

coogee · 15/01/2022 13:27

I am extremely fit and can score a zero doing that test but I would naturally score a 1.

HaroldMeeker · 15/01/2022 13:29

I generally just sit up and then push myself to standing using my arms. However, I found it impossible a few years ago when I had a frozen shoulder and got myself completely stuck. I had to get myself to kneeling and then push up. I couldn't get my arms to go where I needed them. Thought I'd be sitting in the bath all night!!! I had showers after that.

SocialConnection · 15/01/2022 13:34

I'm a bit fat, and have had shoulder and back problems but they're ok now. But yes I have to roll sideways then onto my front and kneel up, using water buoyancy to help 🤔. This is why I shower.

Chely · 15/01/2022 13:40

I drain water and put hands on side of bath so I don't slip as I stand up, not the slimmest atm. I had to turn over on to hands and knees when heavily pregnant, tended to avoid baths mostly. Not a big fan normally anyway and would rather shower.

KewMummy87 · 15/01/2022 16:29

@ineedsun thank you. Honesty is my middle name at the moment!

FangsForTheMemory · 15/01/2022 16:36

I am very overweight and have lousy balance so I have to roll on to my front, bring my knees up under me and stand up that way.
