How do you get out of the bath?

Aibu to ask how you get out of the bath (if you are healthy with no disabilities)?

I’m not a weird bath perv. I let the water run out yesterday and couldn’t get out! I had to re-fill the bath. I can only get out by sitting sideways, getting onto my knees and climbing out from there.

I need to know if that’s normal or if it’s because I’m enormous at the moment. I can’t remember my slimmer days. They weren’t even that long ago!

Thank you. Sorry for odd aibu.

Thanks everyone. Clearly I’m not unreasonable for asking. Needed to check and wasn’t the sort of thing I wanted to ask my nearest and dearest!

I put my left hand on the side of the bath and my right hand on the bottom of the bath, bend my knees and push.

I’ve lost 2stone and it’s def easier to get out now. I’ve had a couple of instances in the past 18mths where I was in a hotel and the bath was the ‘wrong’ way round and it couldn’t work out how I normally get out as it felt wrong.

Thought I was going to be stuck, especially as I’d locked the bathroom door. God, can you imagine how embarrassing that would be blush

KewMummy87 · 14/01/2022 20:18

@isthismylifenow I don’t normally. But I got too hot and was reading a book!

Blush
beaverdiego · 14/01/2022 20:19

Similar to you OP, sort of turn to side then onto knees to push up from there.

KewMummy87 · 14/01/2022 20:19

@Sewaccidentprone just SO embarrassing!!!

I hold onto the sides and get my feet under me in a squat, then push up from there but it is harder without water in the bath, the buoyancy does help. I'm 46, size 12, weigh just over 10 stone but am fit, if that helps with your comparison.

isthismylifenow · 14/01/2022 20:21

@KewMummy87

So (sorry to be boring), people put their hands either side on the bath, push and stand up? What the heck else can’t I do that I used to be able to do?! (Handstands but not since I was 10!)
My previous bath had handles and only when I got my new one without any, did I realise how much I used them. They also make good flannel holders.

I grip the top of the bath now, just so I don't slip, while I complete phase 1 of exiting bath. I didn't realise until now there are stages 😃

KewMummy87 · 14/01/2022 20:22

@zurala that is helpful. Size 12 and 10 stone is my normal weight and size

OP posts:
KewMummy87 · 14/01/2022 20:22

Obvs am not a size 12 abs 10 stone at the moment.

No handles on my bath, so I go from lying, to sitting up, hands on sides, knees up and stand. Then step out one foot at a time.

Run the cold tap?

I usually have a few hot/cold/hot cycles if I'm luxuriating with a book.

I don't think I ever let the water out first - it does make it much harder to exit.

AffIt · 14/01/2022 20:30

I can't pull the plug before I get out of the bath, it freaks me out.

With regards to physically getting out - I don't know, I've never really thought about it (slim-ish, no physical disabilities or mobility problems. Push myself off my bum, maybe?).

KewMummy87 · 14/01/2022 20:30

Yes. I just had to refill to get out!

Mindymomo · 14/01/2022 20:32

I make sure my hands are dry and both sides of bath are dry and with water in bath I hold on to both sides and pull myself up by bending knees. I had a frozen shoulder recently and didn’t have the strength to pull myself up with one arm, so couldn’t have a bath for a while and I really love a bath.

BlueSky8 · 14/01/2022 20:33

I can't pull the plug before getting out either!

Hands on each side and push up here too.

SomethingSuss · 14/01/2022 20:33

I have a bath with handles. I just use them to haul myself up. The handles however, didn't help when I was very heavily pregnant with DD2. I pulled the plug as usual but got distracted from getting up when baby started kicking and moving, pushing her feet out as far as her legs would stretch. So I played with my tummy for a bit instead of getting out. When the water got too low though I found I was stuck on my back like a tortoise! I had to call my husband to come help while I flailed myself about trying to get sat up enough to stand.

Sideswiped · 14/01/2022 20:35

I can manage to just get myself on to my feet by leaning on my arms to give me leverage, but if I'm completely flat, I can't just sit up (back issues - I have to roll on to my side).
I have been known to lay there like a stranded turtle if I've been to the osteopath or tattooist. 'I'm all right, it will just take me a while to get up' when they ask me in a worried tone if I need help.... Confused

KewMummy87 · 14/01/2022 20:36

@SomethingSuss I can confirm that being 7 stone overweight is even more tricky than being 9 months pregnant.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/01/2022 20:37

I’m enormous at the moment I think I might adopt your method. I just push up to standing with my hands on the sides at the moment, but convinced I am going to fall on my arse at some point. It really is time to loose weight (I mean me not you.)

KewMummy87 · 14/01/2022 20:38

@Luredbyapomegranate me too

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/01/2022 20:39

Why does the Bath being full make a difference though.

KewMummy87 · 14/01/2022 20:40

Buoyancy. When I was in a swimming pool recently my enormous middle and thighs kept floating up. So embarrassing.

EatYourVegetables · 14/01/2022 20:40

There’s a very similar test of fitness - can you go from standing upright to sitting on the floor, and back to standing upright, without using your hands for support on the floor or on your legs, and without using your knees. Every time your knee or hand touches the floor and every time your hand touches your leg you lose a point. The lower your score, the fitter you are.

I’m 40 and normal weight (towards to top of the normal range). My score used to be 0 when I was a bit lighter, is now 1, and was much higher when I was heavily pregnant. I think it really does depend on weight, a lot.

KewMummy87 · 14/01/2022 20:42

@EatYourVegetables wow. What a great test. I might have a go!
