To not wear a mask when breastfeeding my baby

Was feeding 3 mo DS on the train through London this afternoon and took my mask off so he could see my face properly and we could interact. I find BF weird with a mask on. AIBU?

@Legomania

Am the only one whose babies just cracked on with the feed rather than interacting at the same time?
My baby likes to smash me in the face with her little hammy hand.
RonaLisa · 14/01/2022 21:40

@LovelyMoans

It is entirely reasonable for mothers to remove masks to communicate effectively with babies and young children.

This. A friend manages a local nursery and has told me that a huge proportion of their current 2/3/4 year olds are very behind in speech & communication.

Wearing masks damaged our ability to communicate and it is not good for children's development.

This!
Momicrone · 14/01/2022 21:42

Misstrip, no need for interaction all the time but for the baby to see its mums face - absolutely

PheasantsNest · 14/01/2022 21:48

@Inastatus what method of transport would you suggest? Not everyone has access to a car so need to use public transport.

@PheasantsNest - are you vaccinated??

Ignorance is a killer, everyone disagreeing with you should look up the Blank Face Experiment.

Momicrone · 14/01/2022 22:00

I wouldn't think most people actually need to eat and drink on a train at all, apart from babies

Chocomelon · 14/01/2022 22:04

How does having your mouth covered stop you feeding your baby? Presumably you're not a bird?

OP YANBU

BFing isn't an excuse to be inconsiderate of other people

I am BFing a six month old BTW so I'm all for BFing but I would be annoyed if I was sitting on a train and someone took their mask off for no apparent reason

Chocomelon · 14/01/2022 22:04

Sorry I meant OP YABU!

theworldhasgoneinsane · 14/01/2022 22:04

I hated breastfeeding with a mask on for many reasons

  • it made me hot
  • it got in the way and couldn't see my baby properly
  • my baby couldn't see my face, which IS important especially in unfamiliar places. People who say it doesn't affect feeding it absolutely does as breastfeeding is so much more than just feeding.
  • this is all bonkers and the rules are ridiculous (hence my username) Smile

Good for you OP, stuff what others think

Absolutely, very good point well made!

@MissTrip82

Goodness I’m impressed by those with such a commitment to breastfeeding they always concentrate on interacting with their baby, every single feed. No Netflix during late night feeding for them! No reading or sneaking a sandwich. Just interacting all the time.

As for the person who can’t see what she’s doing with a mask on 😂😂😂😂 once again we can only be glad that everyone whose basic performance is destroyed by a mask didn’t become a healthcare worker.

I'm puzzled by mums who need to see what they are doing once the baby is latched on.

Yes you’re right because one feed of thousands will be a disaster 🤨🤪
LittleBearPad · 14/01/2022 22:23

@7Worfs

170,000 dead in just this country. Millions dead round the world. Your post is insulting.

Miss me with that virtue-signalling. Lockdowns have killed/doomed more people than COVID ever will.

They are factual statements. They aren’t virtue signalling.
EatDrinkEatDrink · 14/01/2022 22:24

The woman who can't see her feet or breasts wearing a mask, I think you are wearing it over your eyes and not your mouth and nose 🤣🤣🤣 thanks for giving me a good laugh!

amiafreakofnature · 14/01/2022 22:34

Just when you think you've seen it all.
No nobody who is breastfeeding should follow advice on preventing the spread of a potentially deadly virus because yeah breastfeeding is sacrosanct

Bonnealle · 14/01/2022 23:02

Having been to hospital a lot with my baby, it’s so obvious that babies aren’t really bothered by masks. They can tell smiling etc from your eyes - like most humans can. Yes masks aren’t ideal, they are annoying, but to say it’s a detriment to babies for the short amount of time you are in that position for is doing a disservice to both you and your baby. They are much more intelligent than you think, there are so many forms of communication - they can’t even speak yet and you can tell what they want and they know you love them.

theworldhasgoneinsane · 14/01/2022 23:18

If some of the below comments are aimed at me, it's not that I can't see my breasts (or feet, I don't know where that I'm came from though) it's that it's bloody annoying and to be honest if someone said they took it off because of any reason I would probably say good for you! The whole mask wearing, restrictions, rules set by our joke of a government are ridiculous and there's a much bigger picture we're dealing with here. But I'm de railing the thread so I'll shut up 😂

I don't want to offend or annoy anyone, but just say that I understand what the OP means and wouldn't judge someone for taking their mask off

HardbackWriter · 15/01/2022 07:18

@EatDrinkEatDrink

That's me - I suspect I'm maybe smaller breasted (and maybe bigger nosed) than those who think this is hilarious of me - so, erm, sorry for that? I can see more in one of those absolutely useless cloth masks, but in a proper one I can't see my own breasts - it blocks my field of vision. As I said it was only an issue for me while establishing breastfeeding - after that I could breastfeed with a mask on because I didn't need to see to latch him on - but I'm not making it up! I also couldn't see the baby's face if I had him in a sling and was wearing a mask, which bothered me much more.

I would understand people's outrage over this a bit more if the rule was that everyone wears a mask at all times with no exceptions, but since OP could have taken her mask off if she fancied a packet of crisps I don't see why it's a big deal, really.

KiloWhat · 15/01/2022 07:21

YABU but I don't really care

poweredbyplants · 15/01/2022 08:11

YABU tbh, I've BF my baby in hospital waiting for appointments a few times and kept my mask on. Baby still got fed and doesn't resent me for it. 😅

OhWhyNot · 15/01/2022 08:37

I don’t know how easily your baby settles some babies in surroundings they are not used to need extra reassurance

Given so many on London public transport are not wearing masks I doubt anyone would have given it a second thought I personally wouldn’t have

Ffs there was a wan the other week posting to see if it was OK to rake her mask off to have a "train pic nic" and wine. It was almost unanimous that she was not being unreasonable and she was to enjoy. OP took her mask off to let her baby see her and she's ridiculous 🙄. This place is fucking nuts.
