To not wear a mask when breastfeeding my baby

278 replies

Catsdogsandfoxes · 14/01/2022 17:54

Was feeding 3 mo DS on the train through London this afternoon and took my mask off so he could see my face properly and we could interact. I find BF weird with a mask on. AIBU?

I work in maternity unit in a hospital, giving birth and feeding your baby are the two reasons we say you don’t need to wear a mask

Inastatus · 14/01/2022 20:21

@Lifeisnteasy - Not wearing a mask during feeding should apply regardless of whether that’s breastfed or bottle fed.

Obviouspretzel · 14/01/2022 20:21

OP is very selfish for wanting her baby to be able to see her face when she is breastfeeding? Despite the fact that people who are eating and drinking can sit there for an hour with no mask on ?

Covid has truly made people absolutely mental.

Parker231 · 14/01/2022 20:22

How long was the train journey? - wear the mask on the train and take it off to feed at home - hardly damaging to the baby.
Does it make a difference wearing a mask when breast feeding v bottle feeding?

notacooldad · 14/01/2022 20:23

Maybe that’s why Covid rates are the highest in the north
More than likely I'd say!!
Annoying!

JanisMoplin · 14/01/2022 20:25

50% of the people on the Tube are not wearing any, so I wouldn't be glaring at you for not wearing one.

Hyppogriff · 14/01/2022 20:25

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea

How does having your mouth covered stop you feeding your baby? Presumably you're not a bird?

On a side note, I thought you didn't have to wear a mask on a train if you were sat down and no one sat around you? I rarely get a train so don't really know the rules there.

Hahaha this made me laugh .

Yabu - you are not a bird

goawaystormy · 14/01/2022 20:27

Yabu - you are not a bird

I do want to make this a new MN abbreviation Grin YANAB

it's just sad we don't have more situations to use it in

Momicrone · 14/01/2022 20:27

I would not wear a mask whilst bf

Toomuch2do · 14/01/2022 20:28

I was recently abroad where there is a mask rule, including outside and for children over 3. Everyone obeyed it and got on with it.

Why do people in this country think they are so special that the rules don’t apply to them? If you don’t want to breast feed with a mask on, give a bottle or don’t get on the sodding train.

Don’t put others at risk for your lifestyle choices.

LadyCleathStuart · 14/01/2022 20:29

I wear a mask but I really don't see why people are so militant about it.

As I constantly point out, mask wearing has never stopped in Scotland and our rates have always been pretty much the same as England. Don't see what difference they make at all tbh.

Anyway OP I would have found it annoying to BF (or bottle feed) in a mask but probably would have done it just because it's the done thing just now. Every feed doesn't have to be staring into their eyes, I used my feeds with my second baby to interact with my then toddler or to read because it was the only time she was quiet! Our bond is still strong despite this.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/01/2022 20:31

Yes.

Absolutely this. Fuck the babies.
HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 14/01/2022 20:33

@HardbackWriter

It goes over your mouth and nose, not your eyes!

Put a mask on then look down at your chest. You won't have your full field of vision. I can't see my own breasts with a mask on.

I can definitely see my norks whilst wearing a face mask!!

I haven’t read all the replies but I really struggled breastfeeding with a mask on as I couldn’t see my boobs! I wouldn’t have taken the mask off to interact but to see wtf I was doing! Yanbu

Tilltheend99 · 14/01/2022 20:35

Op: AIBU
MN: Yes UABU
Op: Idk

Hmm I wouldn’t personally interact with my baby while bfing as would rather not distract them but each to their own.

This is really just an anti-mask post rather than anything to do with breastfeeding

LittleBearPad · 14/01/2022 20:35

@7Worfs

Masks on 3 year olds for a sniffles ‘pandemic’? Some countries are beyond salvaging now.
170,000 dead in just this country. Millions dead round the world. Your post is insulting.
Givemepickles · 14/01/2022 20:36

YANBU your baby should always come first. Half of London doesn't wear masks on the train. Ignore the haters! Enjoy your baby 💕

EatDrinkEatDrink · 14/01/2022 20:37

I'm breastfeeding my 3rd child (as I type this), he's got his eyes closed and I'm typing this. You really don't need to take your mask off to breastfeed, your baby couldn't care less (unless your mask covers your boobs too). Is this you pfb by any chance 😏?

MogsBestestFurball · 14/01/2022 20:38

As a breastfeeding mum yanbu.

Lots of misogynist comments on here. Men can go to the pub and sit there unmasked drinking beer, but a newborn baby can't see mummy's face when boobing - something really wrong about that.

MorganKitten · 14/01/2022 20:38

@Catsdogsandfoxes

People's responses actually surprise me! There was actually no one sat around me as the train was v quiet but just wondered what people thought...half of London don't seem to be wearing them at the mo. My baby was upset and I wanted him to see my face so I could comfort him while feeding...and I don't regret it!
Most of London are wearing masks, I personally wouldn’t feed on any TFL service - even with the extra cleaning and there wasn’t a need to take your mask off.
Inastatus · 14/01/2022 20:39
**@JuergenSchwarzwald* @Inastatus* I am CEV the behaviour of the OP and others could kill me. It is selfish behaviour.
Are you vaccinated @PheasantsNest? If so then you are protected against severe illness/death. If not then I suggest you find an alternative to public transport.

Lesserspottedmama · 14/01/2022 20:39

You are not BU but you are unreasonable to ask on mumsnet where you will not find a sane answer when it comes to a flimsy bit of cloth over your face (that does absolutely bugger all). Honestly, most of the people on here sound like bots!

Tilltheend99 · 14/01/2022 20:39

People who buy wine and sit there sipping in for over an hour so they can make brainless small talk with their work colleagues are also unreasonable btw, in fact even more so.
