To not wear a mask when breastfeeding my baby

Catsdogsandfoxes · 14/01/2022 17:54

Was feeding 3 mo DS on the train through London this afternoon and took my mask off so he could see my face properly and we could interact. I find BF weird with a mask on. AIBU?

OP posts:
Fallagain · 14/01/2022 17:56

Yes. There was no more need to interact when bf than at any other time.

LittleBearPad · 14/01/2022 17:57

There was no need to take your mask off.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 14/01/2022 17:58

How does having your mouth covered stop you feeding your baby? Presumably you're not a bird?

On a side note, I thought you didn't have to wear a mask on a train if you were sat down and no one sat around you? I rarely get a train so don't really know the rules there.

DuchessSilver · 14/01/2022 17:58

I find it hard to see what I'm doing breastfeeding with a mask on so I think YANBU.

rainbowandglitter · 14/01/2022 17:58

Imo you should have kept your mask on.

Sorry, but this made me laugh 😂😂
Glitterygreen · 14/01/2022 17:59

Yeah sorry, don't really see why you needed to remove it for this reason as opposed to any other time during the journey.

Not a mask fanatic tbh but I don't see why you'd wear one except for breastfeeding.

Briarshollow · 14/01/2022 18:01

Seems a bit performative to me to take your mask off just to breastfeed. You say London train so I’m guessing it was quite busy.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 14/01/2022 18:01

YANBU breastfeeding with a mask on is a pain. Especially when breastfeeding a toddler...they just ping it.

People who are saying you dont need to interact with your child when breastfeeding obviously haven't been doing it right! Breastfeeding is all about nurturing and bonding. In addition to obviously the feeding part.

JaninaDuszejko · 14/01/2022 18:01

I thought you were going to be a super paranoid new Mum worried about infecting your child that you live with.

For a single feed on public transport I think it would have been better to keep your mask on. And I'm not entirely convinced cotton masks in public areas make much difference to the spread but it's about what is polite.

QuiltedHippo · 14/01/2022 18:02

A lot of things are weird with a mask on but you have to suck it up.

Annoying when they twang it back in your face too.

Huge supporter of BF but I think YABU

JDaytona · 14/01/2022 18:03

YABU.

miltonj · 14/01/2022 18:03

My baby always pulled my mask off when I was bf in public. Over and over so there was really no point.

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/01/2022 18:03

Should still wear a mask.

Viviennemary · 14/01/2022 18:04

Grin @ presumably you are not a bird. (OP could identify as one I suppose.)

Not every feed has to be a magical bonding experience!
RegardingMary · 14/01/2022 18:06

Unless the mask was over your tit I dont why you couldn't wear it.

Ikona · 14/01/2022 18:06

As someone who has EBF 2 kids (youngest is still feeding), I think YABU. It's not an ideal situation, but for one feed yes, you should have kept your mask on.

Inastatus · 14/01/2022 18:06

I don’t think YABU OP. Feeding your baby (either via breast or bottle) is an important bonding time and should not be done with a bloody mask on. Plenty of people sit there eating and drinking the entire journey to avoid wearing a mask so I don’t see what harm you were doing in these circumstances.

PheasantsNest · 14/01/2022 18:06

You are very selfish.

No you are required to wear the mask all the time whilst on public transport.
MichelleScarn · 14/01/2022 18:07

Yanbu. You can have a mask off while eating/drinking here, I'd have taken snacks and a drink!

Ileflottante · 14/01/2022 18:07

First kid, am I right OP?

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/01/2022 18:09

Next time get something to eat and drink with you.
