Not seen neighbours in weeks lights and heating on

Been thinking to myself the last week or so how weird it is that we haven't seen the neighbours in weeks probably coming up to a month now. Every single light on in the house and heating on all day and night.

They have had lots of police involvement in the past, she had 4 older children with learning difficulties police were being called out so many times a week. Her children are normally jumping on the car roof slamming doors etc. Not seen or heard a peep from them since mid December. I always felt sorry for her because it seemed like she couldn't cope with all of them in that small house they were running her ragged.

I knocked on yesterday morning and obviously no answer, is this something you would report to the police or just leave it?

You did the right thing reporting. Hopefully they just forgot to turn the thermostat down and accidentally left the light on. Sounds like something we'd do 🙈

I reported a neighbour once after not seeing her for ages. Id knocked, peeked through what windows I could. Nothing. Bins weren't put out for a few weeks.
She was on holiday and then didn't speak to me for years afterwards because the police broke her door down.
I understand how much it plays on your mind, constantly wondering if theyre okay.
Even though she didn't speak to me for years, I am still pleased I called the police. Id much rather call the police to find there was a stupid and innocent reason behind why I'd not seen her, than to find out she did need help and I kept brushing my concerns off.

Well done on contacting police. It was the right thing to do, even if nothing's wrong.

How worrying. You did the right thing notifying the police. Fingers crossed there is a simple explanation.

Could they be on holiday?

@TheYearOfSmallThings

Are they from the UK? Might they just have gone to their home country for an extended stay?

I wondered this. I have neighbours who spend several months in another country and have been known to leave a light on and windows open (in winter!) But all the lights and heating as well does seem odd. Hope you get an answer eventually OP

Posted instead of preview. Let's hope this family is just on holiday too. Possibly caught in isolation somewhere.

Thanks everyone, would like to think someone else would do the same for us if they was concerned.
I'm working from home so sat by the window all day, no police have turned up yet she did say on the phone they didn't have any available officers to go out and check yet until later but she would call the housing association.

Her children are old probably 20's when we first moved in though it was just her and her daughter then more kept turning up. They all looked like her so I assumed they are her kids. They was destroying her car jumping on the roof and throwing toilet rolls over the house. Running up and down the estate next door nearly ran them over. I am guessing they had some learning difficulties.

It sounds as though the family have a chaotic lifestyle. I hope all is well!

Hope everything turns out OK. Although I suspect the energy bill won't be 😳

Just wanted to say (apologies if someone has already posted it) that the lady found after more than 2 years in her flat was Joyce Vincent. I worked with a lady whose husband was one of the council officials that (along with Police) found her. There’s a really moving film about her life - Dreams of a Life. She had an amazing life. It’s so sad what happened to her. You’ve done the right thing reporting it OP.

I had to ring 101 for something like this a couple of months ago. My neighbour had died Sad

You’re right to report it.

Evicted and left all the utilities on to waste the housing association's money?

It's more likely that they have absconded to flee debts than that there has been anything criminal, tragic or fatal - just from probabilities. But you have done the right thing to report it anyway - if they have done a bunk then at the very least the property can be let out to a different family in need. If there is something more serious, then the right people will be alerted.

Def right to report, even if it just that they are evicted to get the house shut down properly.

Hopefully she has simply left, and forgot to turn off the heating or lights. I suppose she could have been visiting family at Christmas and had some emergency which meant she has had to stay there.
It is good that you are getting a check though OP.

Nearly did this for my neigh our once, hadn't seen him in weeks or heard him, his living room window was covered in black flies on the inside. Checked my CCTV and turns out he was alive and well.
Flies creeped me out tho.
Hope all is well.

Another option is social services. They may well have been providing some support due to the kids disabilities.

Wow. Not every person who behaves badly has learning difficulties. Have you any idea how insulting your assumption is?

I have sent an email to them but no response

I would have phoned the Housing Association, emails can get lost in junk file

Glad you reported. I did this about a neighbour who's milk was piling up on his doorstep. He had died.
