I phoned my friend this evening to wish her a Merry Christmas & ask how her pg was going. My best mate is 41+5 weeks pg & a midwife came to do a sweep but it was'nt her regular midwife. She told her the usual that she should go into labour very soon blah blah, however, they said that with her DD 1 and she ended up getting to nearly 43 weeks & had to be induced.

The midwife told my friend that the best way to get into labour is to have sex but to swallow is more effective, my friend said "what do you mean by swallow" and she said "you know, oral". She wan't even laughing about it either.

I really cant believe a trained professional would say something like this. Should she report this midwife? I told her she should. I would be furious. Is she being unreasonable to report her because of this comment?

Is your friend the Virgin Mary?

hercules1 · 24/12/2007 21:10

No , she didn't. She gave some advice. Why not complain about her assuming she liked pineapple or curries?

SpacecadetLovesChristmas · 24/12/2007 21:11

for crying out loud..its hardly offensive..yes semen contains prostaglandins which can trigger labour, apparently, some hospitals give prostaglandin tablets as opposed to the gel applied to the cervix, so in her opinon she feels that swallowing will probably be more effective..she was giving helpful advice..ok, so its probably the last thing she feels like doing..but it was hardly the crime of the century to suggest it...if she is desperate to bring on the baby, tell her to indulge in some nipple twiddling.

NO she didn't assume any of those things.

She just passed on the info that it could help.

Stop seeing it as a judgement of your friend's sex life.

HunkerGotLeprosyFromAFact · 24/12/2007 21:12

No, SLF, she assumed she:

..had seen a penis before.

..was quite keen to go into labour.

..wasn't averse to off-the-wall suggestions.

..wasn't Mrs Mangel off 1980s Neighbours (who preferred water, iced, not from the tap, to blow jobs).

You don't have to do it on a regular basis in order to do it as a one off to induce labour. Surely much better than being induced unaturally.

HunkerGotLeprosyFromAFact · 24/12/2007 21:13

How would she have felt if the midwife had said:

"Have sex and I recommend doggy style because frankly, you're enormous and anything else will result in Flat Stanley-esque baby, plus he'll deliver his dollop right onto your cervix that way. Enjoy!"

Snaf · 24/12/2007 21:13

Where is the assumption? I mean, I know it's Christmas Eve, but can we assume this wasn't an immaculate conception?

Snaf · 24/12/2007 21:13

Oh, hark at me, assuming all over the place

hercules1 · 24/12/2007 21:13

pmsl hunker

HunkerGotLeprosyFromAFact · 24/12/2007 21:13

The only time I'd have reported this midwife would be if she'd asked to watch.

Otherwise I'll have to get my prude alert bell out and ring it loudly.

HTH.

My friend informed me she finds the thought of 'swallowing' semen disgusting, so I am only going by what she told me over the phone.

So she doesn't have to do it.

hercules1 · 24/12/2007 21:15

snort

SpacecadetLovesChristmas · 24/12/2007 21:15

no ones forcing her to do it SLF..it was a chuffin suggestion

HunkerGotLeprosyFromAFact · 24/12/2007 21:16

PMSL at 'swallowing'. It's not very effective if he splashes it across her chest, I'm afraid.

I'm in an Odd Mood tonight, can you tell?

ScottishMummy · 24/12/2007 21:16

the MW has done nothing wrong nay a comment not found humorous - no biggie MW clinical skills, professional judgement are not in question so what exactly is there to report god forbid a sense of humour. I hate to birst your bubble but medics and nurses have
wicked sense of humour - what she said was mild by comparison Oh no Guess what your mate did not get up the nelly with her legs closed so mebbe she knows about blow jobs too.

hercules1 · 24/12/2007 21:16

Next they'll be suggesting women have sex to get pregnant?
