To think I can eat this and lose weight?

Struggling to lose half a stone🙄

I do a spin class every day for 30 mins, this is what I ate today and kind of typical for me:

Breakfast
1 slice low carb bread with peanut butter
2 black coffees

Snacks:
1 Maryland cookie
2segments of chocolate Orange

Dinner:
Salmon fillet
Jacket potato with cheese
Roasted broccoli and cauliflower with grated parmesan

AIBU to think even with the two naughty slip ups I should still be able to lose weight given that I exercise every single day?!

Referring to food as 'naughty' is tragic honestly.

Pikaso · 12/01/2022 10:29
@Pikaso, as per my post, I can't exercise much so walking only. I do at least 10,000 steps most days
Oh sorry, I misread your post, I thought you said you exercise a lot 😂

PlanktonsComputerWife · 12/01/2022 10:30

More protein, more veg, and strength training. You're only going to lose water weight and muscle mass otherwise

acatcalledjohn · 12/01/2022 10:40

^^ This. A million times this.

I don't know if anyone watched the Ruth Langsford doc Lose a Stone in 4 Weeks the other day? It had me incredibly frustrated:

"I don't think about the calories in this breakfast, but I should." - No, you should become aware of it but not label it as bad if you only have it once in a while.

"I call them snaccidents." - Ah, right. So you are justifying the stuffing of your face by absolving all personal responsibility.

"I'll never be slim, that's not me." - Of course you won't be if you keep eating low nutrient calorie dense food from the cafe next door every single day.

There was absolutely no clear message on making small, healthy changes. It was all about crash diets. Snaccident lady relies on Slimfast shakes from time to time, another one uses Boombod intermittently to keep on track. Another (who had a habit of lacing her food with salt) ended up saying "I needed something drastic" and instead of making changes to her lifestyle, she went for a gastric band.

The ones that changed their habits properly, with real food and willpower, were 3 men and two women, out of 12 participants. Staggering.

RosieLemonadeAndSugar · 12/01/2022 10:46

They're not naughty slip ups if you count them in your calories.

You are allowed a treat. Treats are not naughty.

Download my fitness pal and stick all your food in there and see how you get on... Id guess your probably eating too little.

LaChanticleer · 12/01/2022 10:57

I can't exercise much so walking only. I do at least 10,000 steps most days

10,000 steps is the minimum anyone should do for general health. It's a minimum, not a goal! A goal might be 20 to 25,000 steps.

LindaEllen · 12/01/2022 10:59

Download MyFitnessPal and calorie count. I'm losing weight and eat chocolate every single day - just small amounts.

theleafandnotthetree · 12/01/2022 11:04

@Silvercatowner

Or... be happy being half a stone heavier. It all sounds so complicated and clinical.
Indeed, you can make yourself miserable and a bore fighting that same bloody half a stone for your whole life. Really a waste of time, energy and headspace.

Ffs is there any need to be so negative? You don’t know anything about that poster’s health. They’ve said they can’t exercise much. 10,000 steps a day might be a real challenge for them. I’m fit and heathy, exercise lots and hardly ever get 20,000 steps a day.
Daisydoesnt · 12/01/2022 11:11

I wouldn't usually have cheese on the veg tbh, I'm just trying everything I can to get my dd to eat vegetables at the moment

OP I’m really not trying to kick you when you’re done but you must see the irony is this statement? You’re trying to get your DD to eat more vegetables and yet the cheese-covered broccoli and cauliflower are the only vegetables or fruit you’ve eaten that day?

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/01/2022 11:12

More veg, less sugar.

Butteryflakycrust83 · 12/01/2022 11:12

10K steps a day is also a totally made up figure. There's no scientific guidance behind that at all.

LaChanticleer · 12/01/2022 11:23

@Butteryflakycrust83

Well, quite.

It may not be possible for people to exercise sufficiently for all sorts of reasons, but we should all be aware that 10k steps per day is a bare minimum, if that is the only exercise someone does. Walking 10k steps per day is really good for us for all sorts of reasons (walking more is even better) but it won't make you particularly fit nor contribute very much to weight loss.

It's one of those "nudge" policies. But it should be regarded as a bare minimum. Not "I do 10k steps a day therefore I am not sedentary."

And I say this as someone who does10-12 hours at my desk 6 days a week. I have to do a lot of other things to counteract that.

Butteryflakycrust83 · 12/01/2022 11:35

Buts its a totally, fictional figure, and for some, completely unattainable. Others do it without even thinking about it.

Its utter nonsense and another thing that sets people up to fail.

maddy68 · 12/01/2022 11:41

I don't think you're eating enough and your body has gone into starvation mode so it's storing rather than losing.

Eat a proper breakfast. Eg porridge (Forget low carb bread when you're eating potatoes and viscus ).

Make a nice salad for lunch with some tuna and olive oil and balsamic dressing

Have fish or lean meat with Veg (cut down the potato/pasta carbs ) for dinner

You shouldn't be hungry or need snacks with that plus it's balanced

Pikaso · 12/01/2022 11:47

God please no “starvation mode” bullshit. If this was even a thing the “starving children in Africa” would be huge and anorexics would be obese 🙄

Thats in poor taste even for MN
LaChanticleer · 12/01/2022 12:42

It's not quite "utter nonsense" though - it gives an idea of an absolute basic minimum of activity most adults need to maintain basic health. Of course there will be people who can't do it, and others who are active enough without having to "do their steps" deliberately.

But for most of us, it's a signal that we need to be more active in simple everyday ways. Remember the "calories in housework" craze?

My concern is someone saying "Well, I get enough exercise. I do my 10,000 steps a day."

Not attainable for everyone. I probably do 4000 or so, it is what it is

you eat more then me a day and I'm a size 12, just saying, I dont do any classes, I just walk to the school and back 3 miles each way without the child he demands to take the tube there and back, I lift wieghts twice a week and do 100 sit ups a day, as well as just generally dance round the kitchen and doing the shopping and house work.

but what are you drinking

PurpleDaisies · 12/01/2022 13:44

I eat twice as much as that and I’m a size 8. Just saying.

Pikaso · 12/01/2022 13:55

Butteryflakycrust83 It’s not bad taste at all, “starvation mode” suggests that you put on weight by starvation - so surely the actual starving people of the world would all be fat?! Otherwise where is the logic?

IGotHam · 12/01/2022 14:05

The 10,000 steps thing was conjured out of thin air. There has recently been a study, it was in new scientist the other week that you don't really get any noticeable benefits from walking over 7000 steps. So that is a good goal if anyone is looking for one.

Skeumorph · 12/01/2022 14:15

The problem is it's a weird mix of things which will cancel each other out.

There's just no point in low carb bread, which will be really bad for you, if you then eat biscuits and jacket potato. You AREN'T being low carb, and it's not a case of 'well some low carb will still do some good' - no - that's not how it works.

The snacks could so easily be replaced by things which will actually fill you up and be better for you especially if you do cut carbs in which case you would pack in more fat and protein. Nuts, cheese, cold meats - all much better, filling, and 'treaty' if you get it right.

You're just doing it all wrong Grin

Skeumorph · 12/01/2022 14:16

Cut the major carbs and/or try intermittent fasting.

That would be my first step.

Both would easily see you eat MORE than you have on that list.
