To think I can eat this and lose weight?

Struggling to lose half a stone🙄

I do a spin class every day for 30 mins, this is what I ate today and kind of typical for me:

Breakfast
1 slice low carb bread with peanut butter
2 black coffees

Snacks:
1 Maryland cookie
2segments of chocolate Orange

Dinner:
Salmon fillet
Jacket potato with cheese
Roasted broccoli and cauliflower with grated parmesan

AIBU to think even with the two naughty slip ups I should still be able to lose weight given that I exercise every single day?!

I personally can’t believe you had a whole slice of bread. Did you at least cut off the crusts?

And a potato? Honestly. You may as well have eaten a pound of sugar.

Hmm

I'd have thought you would lose weight on that yes as even allowing for generous portions it's maybe around, or just under 1500 calories, and the average woman can lose weight on that with exercise, albeit gradually. Although if you're older, quite small already or inactive other than the 30 mins, you may need less. I'm 52, 5' 4", 8 stone 10 and eat around 1700 calories, but start to actually gain weight unless i also brisk walk half an hour a day. So I probably wouldn't lose on your days' intake. The biscuit and chocolate at lunch will play havoc with your blood sugar BTW. Surprised you make it to tea time!

Spin can be really good at building muscle. If I were you and looking for motivation I’d get a tape measure and measure waist and hips rather than using scales to chart progress

ChristmasC · 11/01/2022 22:16

To lose weight, you need to consume less calories than you burn.

Potato and cheese have loads of calories so that might be where you are going wrong.

The best diet I have ever tried is the 'lose it' app that helps you count and track calories. Worth a look

Gonnagetgoing · 11/01/2022 22:16

I’ve gradually trained myself to not want sharks or if I do have then maybe a date with peanut butter.

My diet is: breakfast granola, blueberries and yogurt plus honey, weekends toast with peanut butter and marmite or scrambled eggs on toast

Lunch - soup with 2 cream crackers and maybe fruit - plums. Or cottage cheese with cream crackers and small salad maybe adding in quorn mini egg

Dinner cod fishcake, half potato and broccoli and carrots, spaghetti Bolognese, Turkish chicken pilau etc

If your not looking weight then then you need to change it up. It’s the carbs you are eating - your insulin levels are repeatedly going up high multiple times in the day. Add more protein and less carbs. Like this: Breakfast 1 egg scrambled or poached Cooked tomato / mushroom / peppers or some avacado Some meat like ham / salmon / chicken As much black coffee as you want! Lunch: A fresh soup (homemade if you can!) Oatcakes with chicken / cheese / ham / mackerel or fish Or A salad with walnuts, protein such as cheese egg or meat / fish. Dinner: One piece of meat / fish / seafood As many veg as you want but no potatoes, rice or pasta or noodles. Spag Bol with spiralised courgettes no pasta. Tray of roasted veg with fish or meat. Snacks: Greek youghurt with berries. 1 square of 85% dark choc A few almonds or cashews. An apple Grapes Carrrots with dip or hummus. Eat more protein. Less carbs and don’t go below 1000 calories. Eating less (ie 2 choc orange segments) is crap because there is no nutrition at all, they don’t fill you up, you end up being hungry or wanting to snack later and they raise your insulin levels. Cut sugar. Cut wheat. It works - trust me

If you eat less calories than you burn, you will lose weight. Obviously there are healthy ways to do it and unhealthy ways but the principle stays the same.
If you ate no calories, would you lose weight? Yes, of course.
If you ate 100 cals a day, would you lose weight? Yes.
And so on.
If you're on less than 1,000 calories a day and you are burning 2,000 a day, you're going to lose weight.

Gonnagetgoing · 11/01/2022 22:17

I add into that jogging every day round park, every other day 1 or 2 cardio classes and lots of walking.

Whilst that is true, not eating the right calories can lead to ‘cheating’ and snacking or underestimating calories eaten when you do actually have a meal because you are so hungry!
Chickychoccyegg · 11/01/2022 22:20

Laughing at some of these responses,
Why the heck would anyone substitute 2 pieces of chocolate orange for prunes 😂 probably not lower calorie and also horrible.
Not really too much carbs in 1 slice of low carbon bread and a jacket potato either, it's fine.
You're not eating enough, a nice salad or homemade soup for lunch will give you some of your 5 a day and stop you feeling starving and focusing on your weight so much
Those snacks aren't naughty or slip ups, just food, this is the last place I'd ask for food advice though, you've been lucky lots of sensible answers, but always the competitive undereaters 😂

Oddbutnotodd · 11/01/2022 22:24

It’s fewer calories not less. You can’t out exercise a bad diet. Eat real food . Intermittent fasting is a good way to go. Work out what you like to eat. Silverswirl has good ideas. Sugar/refined carbs are not great.

HelloBunny · 11/01/2022 22:29

Have you just started this regime? It may take a few weeks to get results. It’s not that much food, really. I’d add in loads of walking, as well. Ditch the car!

user1481840227 · 11/01/2022 22:31

OP please ignore all the stuff saying you're clearly not in a calorie deficit.

It just isn't that simple.

Lots of people eat in a calorie deficit and they don't continue to lose weight. They just burn their muscle or cause other health issues.

If you follow the advice and start to cut more and more calories then you may eventually get to your goal but it's not good for your body, and are you going to keep eating that way forever to maintain it?

All the slim people I know eat plenty of food and are able to eat treats or have binges without the weight actually sticking!

EdithRea · 11/01/2022 22:31

Ah, the usual lack of protein.

Go for a decent walk and eat like a normal person.

GlitterSquid · 11/01/2022 22:36

I'm low carbing. I wouldn't touch 'low carb bread' with a barge pole, never mind having it with a cookie & chocolate orange chaser!!!!

Those are your problems, right there.

GlitterSquid · 11/01/2022 22:38

The sugars in your diet are keeping you outside ketosis. Drop these (breads, sweet treats, starchy potatoes) and watch the game change,

Mellowyellow222 · 11/01/2022 22:41

As someone who has struggled with eating disorders this thread really worries me.

You are eating very little - I don’t even think that would be 1,000 calories unless you are forming in cheese.

Please speak to you doctor about how you are feeling about weight and food. It’s. Not a good place to be

AngelinaFibres · 11/01/2022 22:41

I would recommend the my fitness pal app. The simple version is free. Excellent ideas on what to eat and how many calories they contain.

madisonbridges · 11/01/2022 22:41

Whilst that is true, not eating the right calories can lead to ‘cheating’ and snacking or underestimating calories eaten when you do actually have a meal because you are so hungry!

I did mention that there are unhealthy ways to diet but I'm not commenting on the sustainability of diets, or even the op's diet, just on the science that eating less calories than you burn will result in weight loss. The bigger the deficit, the quicker the weight loss.

AngelinaFibres · 11/01/2022 22:48

I find 2 eggs scrambled on a piece of brown toast keeps me full until lunchtime. It's low GI slow burn food. No sugar high followed by a crash. Tuna sandwich and fruit for lunch. Small portion of lasagne with lots of salad for evening meal. If you feel hungry then a banana or nuts will take the craving away. My fitness pal app will show you different ideas for other options.

LemonSwan · 11/01/2022 22:52

All of this calorie counting is far too complicated. Have you considered intermittent fasting?

FortniteBoysMum · 11/01/2022 22:55

@sparklesocks the op is on about Terry's chocolate orange segments not orange fruit segments. Would be better off with fruit to boost vitamins and reduce the need to snack.

madisonbridges · 11/01/2022 22:56

Lots of people eat in a calorie deficit and they don't continue to lose weight. They just burn their muscle or cause other health issues.

If you're burning muscle, you'll be losing weight on the scales. It might not be healthy but you'll still be losing weight.

lightisnotwhite · 11/01/2022 22:57

Slim fast and Weight Watchers work of course.
But what really works quickly and for fat around your gut is low carb. One because carbs are high calorie but secondly because you really do use your fat” l’ve been a 10/12 apple and a 16 with wobbly belly.
Low carb and it’s a flat stomach.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 11/01/2022 22:58

Op.. I get you with that half stone Grin (although mine is half a stone gained over lockdown that I just can’t shift). Even MFP tells me I’d need to stick to 1200 calories or less to have a chance, and I’m not sure how realistic that is. Some interesting ideas on this thread though.
