To think ring doorbells are intrusive?

I’ve just discovered that my friends ring football starts recording audio when its motion sensor triggered.
Thank fuck we were only saying “you press it ds, it’s that one on the left” etc and not saying anything more personal or offensive but wtf?
AIBU to find it very intrusive to be recorded like that without knowing!

Loads of people have CCTV on their homes with or without ring doorbells. There’s good reason for it as they’re an excellent security feature at a time when people can burgle houses at will because the police are too busy to come out.

sadpapercourtesan · 11/01/2022 19:21

I agree, it's chilling. You'd be surprised how much of your time in public is being recorded, though.

Nidan2Sandan · 11/01/2022 19:22

You're recorded without knowing every day, there is CCTV everywhere. You know the doorbell is there, unless you have been living under a rock you will have seen Ring advertising and know what they're capable of doing.

JanuaryBluehoo · 11/01/2022 19:23

There is a distance on how much motion it is does record. Also settings on how much you get told its got motion.
We are on a busy street so it was going on all the time.
We now set it together only alert us when it's been pressed.

Lockheart · 11/01/2022 19:23

Are you likely to be saying anything personal or offensive when standing on your friends doorstep?

FlexibleWorkingDenied · 11/01/2022 19:25

Well you might say “urgh I really can’t be bothered with an evening of listening to them drone on about their latest holiday but I suppose we’d better get it over with, here we go…” then press the door bell Grin
Darbs76 · 11/01/2022 19:25

My friend has one in a block of flats and I don’t think the people walking past realise every conversation is recorded and can be listened to. It’s not just when you press it. We have one, I don’t bother watching it back unless for a specific reason. It’s mainly a security feature

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 11/01/2022 19:26

I have CCTV which also picks up audio. The people it's targeting like to get cross and make V signs at it but yeah, there's plenty of other CCTV on my road which isn't labelled!
I did have a CCTV sign but it's been removed on police advice

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 11/01/2022 19:27

Oh and mine only stores for a couple of hours, I only check if it's something I need to send to the police then I DL that section, rest is all deleted. It activates about 500 times a day so I don't watch it all!

megletthesecond · 11/01/2022 19:28

Lots of people don't seem to to think they record unless pressed.
I love mine, lone parents living in a grotty area.

Tara336 · 11/01/2022 19:28

Your recorded in shops, by dash cams in cars, by CCTV on the street, why would a Ring doorbell be intrusive when we are watched pretty much everywhere we go?

Blossom64265 · 11/01/2022 19:30

At this point you need to assume that any residential neighborhood is basically covered 100%. I agree it is strange and somewhat intrusive, but I have also become an active participant.

There are motion cameras covering every inch of our outdoor property and I know most of our neighbors have done the same since we regularly share videos. Most of the time we are sharing animal sightings. We are semi-rural and get lots of interesting creatures. Occasionally it’s criminal activity which also gets shared with the police.

Qthemusic · 11/01/2022 19:30

They record audio Shock. Shiiit. I've a bad habit of muttering to myself, fuck knows what I've said whilst standing waiting for people to open their doors, probably along the lines of 'hurry the fuck up, I'm fucking freezing' Blush.

Thanks for the heads up OP, now I know I'll zip it Grin

Toasterandjam · 11/01/2022 19:31

Yep, apparently it can record 360 degrees. So your neighbours know your business.

museumum · 11/01/2022 19:32

I’m honestly shocked that people are saying most cctv records audio. I’ve only seen council footage and our local shopping mall and it’s always silent. It never has sound on police programmes in tv either. What is the benefit for security of recording audio?

I certainly have said on peoples paths things like “let’s make an excuse to leave by 9” or “ds I know their dc is really bossy but please play with them for a bit”

On the adverts they do not show home owners listening to peoples chat as they walk up the path.

I won’t be saying “I know they’re dicks but we only have to show our faces for 30 minutes” on the doorstep anymore 😂

@Tara336

Your recorded in shops, by dash cams in cars, by CCTV on the street, why would a Ring doorbell be intrusive when we are watched pretty much everywhere we go?
Because it’s recording audio before you press the bell. I bloody hope passing dashcams aren’t recording my conversations!!!

I hate all this. The concept of privacy seems to have been lost forever. Governments all over the world must be loving this blind compliance of the population to being monitored constantly.

To be clear, I have no problem with cctv security in public areas, our outside ones home. But when it comes to people having cameras running inside their homes (when they're in) and ring doorbells recording private conversations (seriously, what extra security from burglars does that achieve?), I'm appalled.

Being monitored anonymously in a shopping centre is one thing. Filming your friends inside your home without their knowledge (the subject of another recent thread) or recording their private conversation outside your door, is beyond intrusive.

If I found that any of my friends were doing this, they'd no longer be my friends.

Mine is so I can supply the noise to the police of the bricks/bottles/banging on my windows It's slightly more impact when you can hear the crack/bang, and also sometimes picks up them speaking so helpful for ID/names It's great fun... Sad
rrhuth · 11/01/2022 19:36

There has been a recent case where someone was made to take their cameras down due to the fact it was stopping their neighbour having reasonable privacy, due to recording both video and audio. If your neighbour has one at the back it can record your conversation in the garden for example.

They are too intrusive. CCTV over your own property is one thing, recording the whole street because you are a paranoid/nosey twat is another thing entirely.

saraclara · 11/01/2022 19:37

The examples you give are anonymous. Recording people you know and count as friends, without their knowledge, is actually pretty sick.
Sockbabies · 11/01/2022 19:37

I have one, it became an absolute star when I had a big incident happen followed by witness intimidation as despite hiding behind the bush, the voices were heard and clearly.

Honestly wouldn't be without it.

Mrstamborineman · 11/01/2022 19:38

Yes it’s intrusive anc from my ring app I can speak to my door bell! I can talk to people walking past! Whenever I want ! It’s weird to think what if someone got access to my app! I have let the battery run out now.
