To think ring doorbells are intrusive?

I’ve just discovered that my friends ring football starts recording audio when its motion sensor triggered.
Thank fuck we were only saying “you press it ds, it’s that one on the left” etc and not saying anything more personal or offensive but wtf?
AIBU to find it very intrusive to be recorded like that without knowing!

I use mine to see when my teens are coming home! They like to have a chat with it when they come in.

I did alter the camera though because it was capturing people in the road outside. It now only covers my house and front garden.

Kinneddar · 12/01/2022 12:45

They know what benefits they get and what they earn from earwigging

I find that very hard to believe. They'd literally need to be standing right outside the door discussing it for the doorbell to pick it up. The range of the audio pretty much covers just your doorstep so youd only catch a passer bys conversation for a second or 2.

Iamthedom · 12/01/2022 12:52

I have 3 cameras - & a ring doorbell because of an ex crazy violent neighbour - one of them has audio . They cover the whole street
I often get my neighbours asking if I can check if Amazon or Hermes left a parcel as they can’t find it 😂
One was going to get Cctv then decided not to bother as she knows my cctv covers the whole st
Between my cctv and my neighbours cctv and ring doorbells you wouldn’t want to be a criminal in our street - you can’t fart let alone rob a house 😂

@Lockheart

Are you likely to be saying anything personal or offensive when standing on your friends doorstep?
In many areas of the country houses front doors are side by side and while stood on your own doorstep your neighbour could easily be hearing your conversation on their phone.

@oldwhyno

I dislike them, and won't have one. But the only thing I think about friends that have them is that they're a bit weak minded.

I don't believe for one minute that they improve security. They might make some people feel more secure, but only until their car gets broken into on camera at night and the police still can't do anything with the footage.

What’s weak-minded about having a Ring doorbell? Confused

I don’t have one, I have a fuck-off CCTV network as I’ve been broken into in the past. It has an electronic trip wire which if triggered, notifies me if someone has stepped into a certain part of the property. It wide-angle records my road, all entrances to my property, it records all around my home and it stores audio and visuals constantly for 28 days, before it then records over it, if you understand.

I only check the footage if I need to or I’m notified of a trip wire triggering. Why do you think police can’t do anything with the footage?

If you think that makes me weak-minded, so be it. I think it makes me sensible.

@Mouseonmychair

It was making me more of a target and the banging on the windows etc was increasing
The sheltered housing opposite me has CCTV which covers the area I'm recording but from a different angle (imagine they are directly opposite) and they have signs up so the police said that's fine as it's the same area that's covered
It is only triggered by movement, and I don't view any of it unless I need to for the police

[quote SoupDragon]I've got a camera recording the street outside of my house (video and audio)

I don't have a choice. My house is ON the pavement and without CCTV I can't tell the police who is bricking the windows, banging on them, throwing bottles, climbing in my garden about 4-7 times a week
The pavement is already recorded by the CCTV opposite me!

Landof · 12/01/2022 13:15

I thought the whole point was to have funny videos of drunk people/ people tripping etc... 🤣 just kidding!
I don't have a problem with them really.

sociallydistained · 12/01/2022 13:18

I really really dislike them. My friend has one and recently sent a video from his of visitors from right across the road and you can hear everything. It was hilarious to be fair because they were slagging off the people they were visiting saying they would probably not be dressed and stink 🤣
But that showed me just how much they pick up! So basically you could be having a conversation in the street and someone half way up the road is privvy to it. It's 1984

Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare!

Emerald5hamrock · 12/01/2022 14:37

They have their downsides however from a security perspective they're well worth it, besides why would you be saying mean things at someone's door, it isn't sound proof.

There was a recent crime wave of home invasions in my area excellent footage recorded the perpetrators were caught.

Similarly to dash cam footage. I wonder if sicko Wayne C would have gotten away with murder without the dashcam footage.

Complete hogwash, a group of youths parked a car up near my house in view of my cameras and broke into a house down the road and fled after robbing them and taking their cash. My cameras picked up the number plate and shortly after the police arrived I went and showed them the footage. The NPR cameras picked them up in the car which was also on cloned plates later thanks to my camera. The police came round for the footage and thanked me.

Also cameras are good deterant for opitunist theifs that are in the majority of all thefts.

YANBU OP

It should be mandatory to put up a sign warning passers by that audio is being recorded (as is the case in some countries when you put up CCTV in public places).

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/01/2022 17:00

I share a path with my neighbour and our front doors are right next to each other so the Ring doorbell covers her door as well. We checked first and she was happy with it and we would never listen to audio (I don't even know if it records audio). However, when she has visitors I can lay in bed and listen to every word they say if they are talking outside as there is a vent in our bedroom! That's probably more intrusive as I get the whole conversation!
