To get the bath mat wet

Please help me settle this long running-dispute.

In my world, a bath mat is there for the purpose of dripping on after I step out of the shower/bath. So yes it gets wet. I then hang it up to dry after I'm finished standing on it.

Acoording to someone else, I am supposed to dry myself with a flannel before exiting the bath/shower so the bath mat remains dry.

This is 100% its purpose surely?

BobGalaxy · 09/01/2022 19:29

What do they think it's for? 🤔

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/01/2022 19:30

Im with you, you step on to it after a bath/shower. It gets hung up on the towel heater when everyone has finished showering in the morning, then washed with the towels at the end of the week.

Brilliant Grin
Is it your dh? In which cause of course LTB…..

Also why flannels to you dry and not a towel?

galacticpixels · 09/01/2022 19:30

I also thought the point was to stand on it wet and dry off!

Sounds kind of awkward making sure each of your feet are dry as you step out of the shower....

LaTomatina · 09/01/2022 19:31

Ha ha ha! You must have been talking to my sister in law!!

Cherrytart23 · 09/01/2022 19:31

Off course that's what it is for.

Hellocatshome · 09/01/2022 19:31

My DGM used to make us get dry with a flannel before wrapping a towel round us when we had a bath so as not to get the towels wet Confused

ponkydonkey · 09/01/2022 19:31

It's for stepping on wet then you towel down and get on with your life 😉

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 09/01/2022 19:31

Well I think thats what bath mats are for but I personally prefer to dry inside the shower then step out onto the mat already dry. It then hangs over the top of the shower enclosure to keep out of the way and dry any tiny bits of water off it.

Raquelos · 09/01/2022 19:32

Haha the someone else seems like they might be a bit of a controlling idiot. The exact purpose of a bath mat is to be dripped on. It's like telling you not to get the towels wet Grin

Pascha · 09/01/2022 19:32

What a waste of time, effort and flannels. The towel dries the body. The mat collects the excess drips. No need for anything more.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 09/01/2022 19:32

Dry yourself with a flannel first?! Just your feet or any part of you that may drip onto the bath mat?

Bordois · 09/01/2022 19:33

The sole purpose of a bath mat is you don't get the floor wet when getting out of the bath/shower.

freelions · 09/01/2022 19:33

Of course YANBU

Someone else is an idiot!

pigsDOfly · 09/01/2022 19:34

Of course they're there to stand on when you're wet from a bath or shower, otherwise what's the point of them.

I imagine that's why some have rubber backs. Although, I suppose that could be to stop them slipping when you step on them, when you're soaking wet of course.

thevassal · 09/01/2022 19:35

Tbh I do dry my body as much as possible while standing in the bath/shower before stepping onto the bath mat....just because I don't have a huge bathroom so try to avoid getting the mat soaking because I hate stepping on it with wet socks later in the day when I go to the loo etc.

LawnFever · 09/01/2022 19:36

Your use of a bath mat is entirety correct, I can’t believe this is even up for discussion and whoever the ‘someone’ else is they’re bonkers!

thevassal · 09/01/2022 19:36

Wouldn't use a flannel to dry myself though...isn't that what towels are for? I don't think I even own a flannel....

Honeyroar · 09/01/2022 19:36

I always roughly dry myself in the bath then step out (roughly drying my feet before I do) and then finish off on the mat. I hate it when the bath mat gets absolutely soaking (my husband does the stepping out dripping wet thing and leaves sopping great footprints on the bath mat, it bugs me).

Hang it up to dry between uses so it’s not being walked on.
Travis1 · 09/01/2022 19:37

Ha ha they’d hate living with me. Puddles fucking everywhere when I get out the shower 😬

Estara · 09/01/2022 19:37

Well I do dry myself and my feet before stepping out of the bath, but the bath mat is there to get wet. That's its job.

RoyKentsChestHair · 09/01/2022 19:39

This is one of the reasons I divorced my XH!

He always used to moan that DS didn’t shower long enough to get properly clean. Then DS was taking too long in the shower. One day he took a normal length shower, got out and XH complained that the bath mat was wet!! I said exasperated, FFS that poor kid can’t do anything right Sad and made plans to get rid of him. One of many unreasonable things obviously, but a snap shot into a life with someone who gets cross about pointless things!

FWIW the mat gets a lot LESS wet when I use it because I squeeze my hair out and wait about 5 seconds before opening the door. There are just two foot shaped wet bits. DS switches off the shower and steps straight out, so there’s a properly wet patch on the mat. But I just hang it up to dry. Not a big deal.

Curiosity101 · 09/01/2022 19:39

I feel like there is a middle ground here... I've shared bathrooms with people who seemed to simultaneously step out of the shower and turn the shower off so the bath mat was soaked through.

So I do think people should give themselves a bit of a shake and remove obvious surface water by wiping it off with their hands but YANBU. The mat is to catch any additional drips, flanneling off before getting out to keep the may dry seems daft.
