To get the bath mat wet

Please help me settle this long running-dispute.

In my world, a bath mat is there for the purpose of dripping on after I step out of the shower/bath. So yes it gets wet. I then hang it up to dry after I'm finished standing on it.

Acoording to someone else, I am supposed to dry myself with a flannel before exiting the bath/shower so the bath mat remains dry.

I’ve met a few people who think the bath mat should stay dry. They all had short hair or hair that dried incredibly quickly. None of them had hair that seemed to soak up gallons of water and can take a solid hour to blow dry.

As this has now become a source of contention in my own household with an adult who feels any water is unacceptable and a child who inherited my sponge like hair, I now feel very strongly that if you have hair that does not soak up water, you don’t get to really set policy on the bath mat.

I use the previous showers towel on the floor instead of a bath mat.

If I tried to dry my feet before getting out of the bath with a flannel or towel, it would probably result in a 999 call.
I get dizzy at the best of times Smile

Never heard of drying yourself with a flannel before you get out. I use my actual towel.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 10/01/2022 07:57

I rather like the drying with a flannel thing - so much less washing!

CounsellorTroi · 10/01/2022 09:06

@purplesequins

imo the bath mat is there so I don't have to step onto a cold tile floor.
And so I don’t slide about as I step out of the bath.

So according to the Collins Dictionary:

A flannel is a small cloth that you use for washing yourself.
[British]

No mention of drying yourself with it!

My ex complained about my getting the bath mat wet because his ex had complained about it - she also had "show towels" that were not to be used for towelling.

I told him it was silly & he eventually agreed but couldn't bring himself to change habits

I tend to have a perfunctory dry with a towel before stepping onto the mat so it's never soaking wet after I've used it. Current DP dos the same.

Singinghollybob · 10/01/2022 12:17

I understand it's a bath's mat's purpose but I don't like to stand on it dripping wet, so I get dried whilst still in the shower, including feet and step onto it keeping it dry.

Oh my god, do you live with my DH?

Those of you drying off INSIDE the shower, where are your towels? Surely they get damp if inside the shower with you? Where do you hang them???

Also, do NONE of you use a squeegee to clean your shower doors before you get out giving excess water a chance to drip away???

And bath mats exist to absorb water. That is their entire purpose.

MeredithGreyishblue · 10/01/2022 18:19

Those drying with a flannel - are you actual borrowers? 😳

Hang towel over shower cubicle (clearly not where it will get wet). After shower, quickly dry some bits of me and wrap myself in towel. Squeegee down doors (would get cold while doing this if not wrapped in towel). further quick dry and step out onto mat. Finish drying self.

I did try this just to be open-minded. It sort of worked–well, it didn't actully get me dry but it got rid of the drips.

They ABVVU. YANBU.

It's to drip onto, to protect the flooring, to prevent you slipping on the floor, etc. Some people reach for their towel and wrap it around their body, and/or towel their hair somewhat (especially if it's thick and very drippy) so that the mat doesn't become saturated.

Some people (such as I) don't. I squeeze my hair out and then get out onto the mat, and stand there for a few moments to dry off a bit while standing on it, and then get my towels (which I can't reach from the bath/shower). We wash it every few weeks and it's fine (if anyone had foot issues we'd not share, though). It has a non-slip backing as we have quite slippery tiles in the bathroom (put there by the builders, not us).

Bordois · 11/01/2022 07:26

How are people managing to dry their feet in the bath/shower? Are you waiting for the bath to drain or drying the shower floor first?

purplesequins · 11/01/2022 07:55

bath
pull plug
take towel
dry upper body (wrap hair towel around head)
put foot on rim of bath
dry leg & foot
step out with the dry foot
put other foot on rim of bath
dry other leg & foot

shower
switch off water
take towel
dry upper body (wrap hair towel around head)
lift up leg and dry it (like a flamingo with arse leaning on shower wall)
step out with that dry leg
repeat with the other leg
