Is this a dogs name ?

LAURAMINIMAQ88 · 08/01/2022 01:17

My son was born and we have named him "Frank" , I don't expect all the people to like it but I felt quite sad when few of the mums on mums group where I belong, were commenting about their dogs name and they were laughing and saying that Frank is a dogs name knowing very well that this is my son's name.
The comments weren't directed to me (they both have had conversation between each other but I found it a bit rude...
Is this really a Dogs name ?
Have I made a mistake ?

I've used human names for my dogs. It doesn't make them any less proper for humans. I chose the names because I like those names, for both dogs and for people.

They were rude to make those comments, knowing you'd see it. I'd ignore them, but remember that they're not very friendly or tactful. Take anything they say with a grain of salt, since they're obviously rather lacking in manners and probably also in common sense.

They think Frank is a dog's name but names like Kayden, Mayden, Okden are "human" names? Hmm

StopStartStop · 08/01/2022 03:58

Frank is a great name. It's one of my 'family names' - almost every generation has a 'Frank', not Francis, but Frank.

I used to keep rabbits - they all had 'people' names.

SquirrelG · 08/01/2022 04:23

@19lottie82 - my Peter is completely black. I've heard of a few cats called Peter, don't know why but it seems like a good cat name!

FranksWife2022 · 08/01/2022 04:28

It’s my husband’s name! And that’s his official name, it’s not shortened from Francis or anything. Just Frank. I’ve never known a dog called Frank but you can call a dog any name, can’t you? Even names that are not real names, if you know what I mean.

Undisclosedlocation · 08/01/2022 05:17

I’m a dog trainer. I have known thousands of dogs. I do not recall a single ‘Frank’ among them

Your friends are both rude and misinformed.

Ponoka7 · 08/01/2022 05:53

My friend's GS is called Frankie, but his name is actually Frank on the BC. My dogs name were Danny, Judy and Poppy. My cats have been Sophie, Belle etc.
Frank is a good strong name. They are being deliberately nasty. My DD'S all have less used names and I got a bit of stick, but as adults they love their names. It's easy to get caught up in other people's opinions, but picture him as an adult and ask if it matters. We are adults longer than we are children. Don't get caught up in development bragging/comparisments either.

Scattyhattie · 08/01/2022 06:39

Thats mean spirited, it's a traditional name. I do know a dog called Frank (it's a cool name) although are lots more Dave, Brian, Alfie, Archie's around.
I've met my animal namesakes and I think it's complimentary that others liked the name when they've less restrictions when selecting than with babies.

Aprilx · 08/01/2022 06:56

My two dogs both have names that could just as easily be on a human. I am not sure I have come across Frank on a dog before and not really on a person other than an old man. But then up until say five or ten years ago you never heard Arthur on anyone but an old man whereas it has had a resurgence as names do sometimes.

drpet49 · 08/01/2022 07:26

I know 2 dogs and 1 cat called Frank.

RunRunGingerbreadMan · 08/01/2022 07:32

No, it's a lovely name, not exactly like calling your child Fluffy, Fido or Rover.

Poppy101010 · 08/01/2022 07:44

I can only imagine the names these "friends" have given their children if they think Frank is a dogs name 🤦🏻‍♀️ !

Frank is a brilliant name.

dudsville · 08/01/2022 07:48

It's a great name for a person. Fwiw I get a lot of compliments on my name (I've always thought this was odd, but thanks mum and dad!) however I also get some people telling me their childhood pet was called my name. It doesn't bother me. I don't feel bad when they say it, even if it was intended as a slight.

Vampirethriller · 08/01/2022 07:50

Rude. Frank is a nice name.

Copasetic · 08/01/2022 07:58

I've never known a dog called Frank. My mum used to say what a great name it is when I was pregnant. Unfortunately my husband's dad was called Frank and he'd walked out on them many years before so we weren't about to name a baby after him! She was right though, it is a great name! I also know a girl called Frankie and like that.

NigellaLawdaughter · 08/01/2022 08:06

The name certainly served Frank Sinatra very, very, very well.
I know lots of dogs with human names, but Frank isn't one of them.
Tell those stupid twits to do one.

RosettaPebble · 08/01/2022 08:08

I know two dogs called Frank and one horse. All beautiful animals with a cool human name. It’s just the in thing, to call your pet by a human name.

I have met many more dogs, cats, ponies, a pigeon and even a car with ds1’s name. I care not and neither does he 😊

Enjoy your lovely frank and consider calling your next pet after these women 😉

CristinaYangismySpiritAnimal · 08/01/2022 08:08

I know a couple of dogs called Frank, but that doesn’t make it a ‘dogs name’.

Imayhaveerred · 08/01/2022 08:17

Short for Francis, which I associate with St Francis. Famous for being kind to animals, and people. Unlike these mums.

Also associated with being open, and honest - “let me be frank with you’ - which are strong qualities in a person.

It’s a great human name.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 08/01/2022 08:17

I gave my oldest DD the same name as my first dog (a Cairn Terrier). I named that dog after my first grade teacher who I worshiped because she taught me to read books. If you love the name and you love the person you gave the name to that is all that counts.
(Unless it is Fido. That IS a dog name.)

WhoWants2Know · 08/01/2022 08:18

I know a lovely gentleman called Frank, so if I heard it I would think of him.

GoodnightGrandma · 08/01/2022 08:19

I wouldn’t see it as a dog’s name, they are rude people. And I’d suggest it was directed at you in a nasty backhand way.

PeaceONoeuf · 08/01/2022 08:21

Ah don’t worry, some people are insecure and vile. In the actual maternity ward the woman two beds down and her mate were laughing at my baby’s name, saying it was a cow’s name. (An actual cow). People get caught up in bonding over being mean.

topcat2014 · 08/01/2022 08:22

Dogs should be given dogs names like ruffles. I hate dogs having people names.
