Middle Class Ugly Clothing part two

Original thread here.
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4446999-To-think-so-many-middle-class-clothes-are-ugly?pg=40

I admit I am hardly a style guru. But when I joined Mumsnet people talked about lots of companies I had never heard of like Toast. So I followed links of clothes posted and looked at the websites mentioned. And was shocked at how ugly so much of the clothing was.
Shapeless grey dresses. Black loose trousers teamed with black tunics which make the model look like she is a member of a cult. Shapeless brown t-shirts.
They are just so ugly. AIBU?

Just popping on to say that @MrsMadderRose has brought immense joy into my life by sharing the plum trousers. Not my style at all (or within my price range), but I picture putting them on to make myself (or DH) giggle. They do look comfy though.

I would definitely wear this linen tunic (in black, yellows do nothing for me). I wouldn't even do any 'dressing up' with accessories. I'd need a bigger size than XS.

The jersey knit shift dresses on the same page are imo very wearable too.

I wouldn't buy this at that silly price, but would buy it in a charity shop in yellow if cheaper. I like that kind of very plain dress.
Forgotthebins · 08/01/2022 22:12

@dangerrabbit you feel attacked because this is an attack thread - some people get their kicks from making other women feel bad about how they look. It has always been this way. However I am staying on the thread for links to brands I had never heard of before!

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 22:18

This thread is nothing to do with making women feel bad about what they are wearing.
People laughed at what I liked. So what? I didn't take it seriously.
The truth is the kind of women wearing Toast and Cos are probably used to getting a lot of compliments on how they look.

I wouldn't spend that sort of money on clothes either, @CaliforniaDrumming, and actually I bought a nice grass-green cotton/linen blend dress just a bit more tulipey/ballooney in shape than that one at a local second hand shop (Goodwill, in US) for $6.99, which is much more my comfort zone money-wise.

A little bit like Eva Tralala stuff.

mathanxiety · 08/01/2022 22:25

I've also managed to find a lot of Eileen Fisher stuff at that particular Goodwill. It's a US brand usually $$$ even on eBay, but not if you cut out the middle man and search the racks yourself.

Why do you think Toast and Cos wearers in particular are accustomed to compliments on their appearance?
StrangeLookingParasite · 08/01/2022 22:47

Just re the French supermarket, was it Monoprix? Their clothing is good. Basic, but good.

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 22:47

@Frenchfurze because they tend to be women with money to spend on decent haircuts, clothes, etc.

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 22:48

@StrangeLookingParasite I realise it was LeRedoute

I would wear it too, but not in black or yellow. I don't live in the UK and it's summer here - on a hot day wearing a plain loose linen dress is the easiest way to stay cool. People can scoff all they like, but I have always preferred to be comfortable.

Wilkolampshade · 09/01/2022 00:19

But surely OP, if people are giving these women a 'lot of compliments' on how they look a fair few people don't think their clothes are actually ugly?
FWIW I haven't had my hair cut professionally since I was 14, (now 53) and buy the majority of my stuff from Primark, H&M and often Amazon exactly because I haven't got masses of cash. Although I'm not sure I could be arsed with a proper haircut even if I won the lottery.
I wear clothes like these because they are unfussy and suit my frame. Sometimes I can afford them, sometimes I have to think sideways and buy/make good fakes. The style itself just suits is all.

Frenchfurze · 09/01/2022 00:52
@Frenchfurze because they tend to be women with money to spend on decent haircuts, clothes, etc.
But isn’t your position that, whatever about their haircuts, their clothes are deeply unattractive, thereby presumably limiting the compliments?

Frenchfurze · 09/01/2022 00:53

Sorry, said the same thing as @Wilkolampshade.

KimikosNightmare · 09/01/2022 01:01

I think it's worth repeating. Seems a bit contradictory to start a thread inviting posters to agree with the OP that Toast clothes are ugly and defend it because women wearing them will get lots of compliments.
Enough4me · 09/01/2022 01:11

I'm new to this thread, but can understand what the OP is saying and think a few replies are getting OTT. OP is not personally attacking any women, she is noting styles that she is not keen on and finds amusing and is wondering what others think. You could say you love all Toast clothes, that's equally your perspective.

If something looks like black bin bag to me, I do find it a funny thing to wear.

Enough4me · 09/01/2022 01:13

Plus £130 for a black bin bag!

KimikosNightmare · 09/01/2022 01:25

I found the OP's posts on the original thread taken as a whole and reading them one after the other without the replies fairly unpleasant.

There was a constant iteration of how ugly these clothes were; why couldn't every one see how ugly; why would anyone who could afford these clothes not buy clothes that were nice; why would anyone wear clothes that make them look as if they are in a cult? laughing at a Toast dress because her 90 year old gran would have rejected it as too frumpy, although criticising other Toast clothes as being clothes that look like you should be 2 years old.

Having said all that it's surprising the OP thinks wearers of these ugly clothes should be used to getting compliments.

Enough4me · 09/01/2022 01:28

If you love Toast, perhaps start a Toast appreciation thread?

KimikosNightmare · 09/01/2022 02:07

@Enough4me

If that's a reply to me , I don't love Toast. I don't have any clothes from Toast. I'm just puzzled at the contradictions by the OP.

There's a long running permanent thread dedicated to Toast on Style & Beauty.

RedHot22 · 09/01/2022 05:22

The comments about compliments is interesting.
My aim is for people to notice ‘me’ and not my clothes or hair etc. This was advice given to me many many years ago by someone who has since done very well in the fashion industry.

I appreciate general compliments far more than comments about a specific item of clothing. I’m often told I look great but doubt that person could tell you specifically what I was wearing

bd67thSaysReinstateLangCleg · 09/01/2022 05:56

@Snorkmaidenn

Shopping at Love Honey, Anne Summers? They do a nice range with visible sex organs.
Those aren't clothes, they are specialist lingerie.
FrazzledCareerWoman · 09/01/2022 07:19

Not a fan of white stuff either personally. Colours / patterns too much and doesn't fit nicely. Isn't it like a surf or skate wear shop for older people Grin

Jigsaw used to be ok as a mid price option. Quality has gone down hill though

When someone is wearing well fitted clothes in lovely, quality material, without obvious branding etc, the clothes aren't wearing them, you can notice hair, makeup, subtle jewellery.

It actually is really expensive to achieve bc so many high street brands use trash materials and are ill fitting

FrazzledCareerWoman · 09/01/2022 07:27

Seconded for &Daughter, I have lovely winter jumpers from them
