Does anyone go into Labour naturally anymore?

Ok tell me if aibu. But I am 31 so lots of friends and family having first babies, out of the ten the past three years only ONE has gone into Labour naturally. Is this normal or are healthcare providers too quick to induce?

I had a failed induction leading to a cascade of intervention including a emergency C-section where I haemorrhaged and then had an infection.

We were both in hospital over a week. I was only induced as I was overdue but my cervix was so unfavourable they couldn't even do a sweep so I perhaps am quite biased.

I was induced about a year ago because of concerns at 39 weeks, didn't have a good experience with the induction overall but it was for the best and everything fine in the end. Most of my friends have gone into labour naturally though.

Cdstjooyv · 07/01/2022 20:54

I did with both my labours - first the evening of due date and second on what I thought would be my due date, even though drs told me it’d be 10 days later :)

CheeseandWine91 · 07/01/2022 20:55

I did at 39+2, took agggges and didn’t have him till 39+4 😅

Fretfulmum · 07/01/2022 20:56

Being induced in a first pregnancy, especially if cervix is unfavourable often leads to an emergency section. Doctors really should give an elective section as an option at this stage.

Out of 8 NCT:
5 emergency sections (following either induction or failure to progress)
1 vaginal delivery with forceps
2 vaginal deliveries

littleselda · 07/01/2022 20:56

I did for both of mine. 39+2 and 40+2

escapingthecity · 07/01/2022 20:56

I did with first at 40 weeks. Currently waiting to do so with second

Tubs11 · 07/01/2022 20:56

Same - 37 weeks and 39 weeks for both

Heckythump1 · 07/01/2022 20:56

I did with both of mine. First on her due date, second 9 days early!

jennyt82 · 07/01/2022 20:57

I went in to labour naturally in all of my pregnancies.
1st at 41+6
2nd at 38+5
3rd at 40+2
4th at 39+2

GarlandsinGreece · 07/01/2022 20:58

I did at 40+5 with my first. Induced with my second at 39+6, as I had gestational diabetes.

Statistics published by NHS England for 2020-2021 show that 47% of labours were spontaneous… more than half of labours are now either induced or elective CS. These has been increasing year on year while spontaneous vaginal births are decreasing. Nice guidelines are likely behind this with induction ‘offered’ (in my experience, pushed) from 41 weeks being the guidance now. As I have read elsewhere there hasn’t been a significant improvement in stillbirth rate as a result of these interventions…

3 spontaneous labours here, last one was past 42 weeks-midwives got very twitchy!!

Dartsplayer · 07/01/2022 21:05

I had all mine without induction including a set of twins (was due to be induced with them on the Saturday but they came early on the Wednesday)

TenoringBehind · 07/01/2022 21:12

I was induced twice. Not my choice but it definitely suited my control freakish tendencies. I was terrified at the thought of going into labour naturally, worrying that it might start somewhere really inconvenient.

fuckyourpronouns · 07/01/2022 21:15

I did twice. 40+4 and 39+6.
First time I was booked for induction on the day and called in the morning to cancel it. I wasn't keen on forcing an eviction and believe that for the majority of cases, induction is not a positive experience nor necessary medically for any other reason than mum being fed up (aren't we all at term!) and for all the mums I have met, those that have had the worst experiences have all been induced.

AHobbyaweek · 07/01/2022 21:16

For the first time there stats say inductions and elective c sections were more common in the Uk than spontaneous labour.
Also people are not given a lot of information about the pros and cons and seem to be told "you will be induced".

FTMworrier · 07/01/2022 21:18

Yep, first baby and went naturally at 39+2

wigglerose · 07/01/2022 21:19

Of the people I know who have had babies, spontaneous labour is in the minority. Most are inductions or c-sections.
The thing that annoyed me most about my induction was how it was presented. I'm a lawyer and I'm not allowed to just tell clients what to do. I have to present their options, advise them as to the risks and likelihood of success, and generally make a recommendations as to the best option based on the client's circumstances.
My induction was broached by a midwife asking, "When is your induction booked again?" A registrar brought it up by saying, "I've checked and you can get induced at 4pm if you want."

No, "Based on your circumstances we recommend induction because of bla bla blah." I tried to discuss the risks and it was very much a shrug of the shoulder and the attitude that the risks of induction to baby and mum are downplayed.

TerraNovaTwo · 07/01/2022 21:20

I went into labour naturally with both of mine.

Hospedia · 07/01/2022 21:20

I went into spontaneous labour two out of four times. First at 39wks, second at 40wks, third an elective section at 41+5, fourth an elective section at 37+5.

Greenrubber · 07/01/2022 21:21

Yes 1st bang on her due date 2nd was 38+2

Conspiracyornotr · 07/01/2022 21:22

My son arrived at home as he wasn't waiting to get the the hospital I didn't have no paramedics lucky I had my mum

Lifeisnteasy · 07/01/2022 21:23

Nope, I had an induction as type 1 diabetic.

It’ll always be a little source of sadness for me that I’ll never go into labour naturally and have that exciting wait, or know what my body would do naturally.

The midwife at my birth seemed surprised the induction had been successful with a first baby at 37 weeks.

RandomMess · 07/01/2022 21:23

I have 4DC and never went into spontaneous labour, not even at 42+3 with numerous sweeps my Bishops Score just struck stubbornly at 1 Sad

My inductions were all straight forward though and had unassisted deliveries. The 42+3 was definitely pushing luck though stuck at 42 weeks after that one.

AngeloMysterioso · 07/01/2022 21:24

I did, 41+3 and 41+1.

Violet1988 · 07/01/2022 21:25

First two were spontaneous at 38 and 39 weeks, number two was so spontaneous he ended up coming out on the bathroom floor and third was induced at 38 weeks due to suspected IUGR.
