To stop BF to TTC?

I'm in a real pickle here.

My baby has just turned one and still feeding from me a lot. I have always fed on demand and am still doing so. I am his comfort, his milk source, and safe to say he loves a boob. He feeds round the clock, and is starting to eat more solids but I'd say is still taking 70% of his calories through my breast milk.

My periods haven't returned, but I am really keen to TTC #2. We don't have age on our side (I'm just turned 35), it may take a while to conceive (though it didn't first time around luckily) and I really would like our babies close together.

I don't know whether it would be awful to stop breastfeeding my son in order to TTC his sibling or whether I just wait and he may self wean? I just can't see it happening any time soon. I've had no hint of a period as yet :-(

It feels I'm doing my son a disservice by taking his boobs away when he isn't ready. But I know a year is a great amount of time and he's had a brilliant start.

I'm just really torn!

Any experience/advice welcome!

No personal experience, but my Dsis breastfed until her ds was 2.5 had another baby and fed throughout her pregnancy.

Some amazing advice from everyone thank you.

So today is day one of 4 x feeds

Morning feed
Feed to sleep x 2 naps
Bedtime feed

And we will offer solids if he asks for it at any other time. I feel a little mean because he is teething but there is always something isn't there!

Are you offering him set solid meals too? Or just breastfeeding and offering solids if he asks for more milk? 😳

Do you mean you're only giving solids if he asks?

@KO81 @thebigpurpleone

This made me chuckle sorry I wasn't clear.

Yes three meals a day plus two snacks as well (just like he's had for the last however many months)

Ok phew. Does he have any milk from a cup?

cheezandbeanz · 08/01/2022 11:23

@KO81 he's literally just taken about half an ounce from a sippy cup of warm whole milk.

He drinks water from a cup no issue.

Since day one he's refused a milk from a bottle or cup so this is progress today!

Read The politics of breastfeeding to see what bf is recommended for so long even in developed nations

I know why it’s recommended for so long in developed nations. I was making a point to someone else that said the WHO guidelines are only in place for countries with little to no access to clean water etc… my point being that the NHS in the UK (a developed nation) wouldn’t recommend doing it if this was the case.

Hope I was clear Smile

@Tryagainplease I was replying to you as the book specifically tackles the point you make about clean water v developed nations standards and it still is an issue here. I wish I could photograph the page for you but I've learnt my book out to me HV
