Would you go for the usual suspects, i.e. anyone from Marigold hotel (and nothing wrong with that) or would you mix it up?

@Notonthestairs

Ian Ventham needs to really fancy himself. Hugh Grant might make a good job of that.
Oooh yes...
iklboo · 07/01/2022 18:15

I have Gary Lewis in my head for Ron but he’s way too young as well.

He could play Ron's lad though?

Talipesmum · 07/01/2022 18:19

In my head:
Julia McKenzie for Joyce, and Vanessa Redgrave for Elizabeth. I was picturing an Egyptian Stanley Tucci type for Ibrahim. Ron looked a bit like Peter from Pottery Throwdown 2021 😁.

MarineBlue33 · 07/01/2022 18:23

Thomas Levin as Bogdan (Danish actor who is baddie in Alex Rider series)

Oh yes!
Lurleene · 07/01/2022 18:26

It's a while since I read the first book and I can't remember the character's name but I definitely pictured him as Peter Egan.

Darkstar4855 · 07/01/2022 18:30

I read they were looking to cast slightly younger people to allow for making a longer series of movies. I’d love to see Kristin Scott Thomas as Elizabeth. I think Penelope Wilton would be brilliant as Joyce and absolutely agree with pp who suggest Roger Allam to play (another) Douglas.

Darkstar4855 · 07/01/2022 18:30

Or maybe Olivia Coleman as Joyce if they fo ho younger.

Darkstar4855 · 07/01/2022 18:31

*do go younger

TravellingSpoon · 07/01/2022 18:34

I see Annette Crosbie for Joyce, she is who I picture when I read it.

I know he isnt old enough, but I see Pete from Gavin and Stacey when I imagine Ron.

evtheria · 07/01/2022 18:38

If younger actors then Brendan Gleeson for Ron, please.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 07/01/2022 18:40

Definitely Stephanie Cole for Elizabeth.
Olivia Coleman would work as Joyce.
Roger Allam would work for Douglas.
All above already suggested.

Jodie Comer for Poppy.

Jijithecat · 07/01/2022 18:40

I think Karl Howman would make a good Ron.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 07/01/2022 18:41

Annette Crosbie would also work for Joyce, yes.

whywouldntyou · 07/01/2022 18:50

Don't care as I wouldn't watch it as the book was crap.

seekings1mplicity · 07/01/2022 18:54

Some amazing ideas here!

Would I be mad to suggest Ricky Gervase for Ventham? Paint him Simon Cowell orange and tell him to play it proper evil?

Yes I was thinking him too but couldn't remember his name Smile
HermioneWeasley · 07/01/2022 18:58

Gemma Jones to play Joyce

Yep mad! He'd work for DCI Chris (?)Hudson though?
MarineBlue33 · 07/01/2022 19:02

Clive Standen (The Vikings) to play Jason - Ron's son

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 07/01/2022 19:03

@KO81

Excellent casting suggestions so far but my god, didn’t you all think the first book needed a damn good edit? I love Richard, he’s very smart, but his status meant this book was a commercial move and publishing ‘yes men’ allowed a weak book out into world. His narrative arc was all over the place. I suspect he knows that and his books will improve with experience. And a good editor.
Totally this. I loved the characters, but can't see how a film would be able to revive the story.

@BlackboardMonitorVimes (blinding user name, BTW) but with the right screen writer...?

Would be so hard, but I suppose possible. They'd have to change so much about the 'who dunnit' element (don't want to give away the ending).

Ps Thank you ☺️

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 07/01/2022 20:27

Bogdan for me would be somebody like Philip Glenister.

I agree with Ray WInstone for Ron, and Art Malik for Ibrahim.

Lbourdo75 · 18/01/2022 05:04

Jason Stratham for Bogdan!
