To think you take a killed cat to the vets, not dump it on a grass verge

Post on FB says 'Found' a dead cat in the middle of the road. Couldn't do anything other than move it to the side as I was busy. " Posted the FB update five hours after doing this.

Cat had been moved about 4m from the road so quite a distance and was hidden from site (not quite sure even how they'd moved him the state he was in)

Poor thing was in a really bad way. I had to put my big girl pants on and take a lot of deep breaths before I dealt with him. I took clean towels and gave him a dignified trip to the vets.

No, I don't like picking up dead cats - particularly after losing one myself to an RTA. But AIBU to think that if you've got time to shift the cat, you've got time to take it to the vets to be scanned?? Or did they move it because they were the ones who killed it?!

Would you stop to take a deceased cat to the vets?

OP posts:
GeraneousGiraffe · 07/01/2022 14:18

'hello, Yes, it's GG. Sorry I'm going to be a couple hours late to my shift on the ICU because I've got to identify this dead cat'

Maybe not.

MrsJBaptiste · 07/01/2022 14:19

I don't even know where my 'local' vets is

Me neither as I don't have any pets and don't like animals. So in answer to the OP, no I wouldn't move a cat, dog or any other animal from the roadside.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 07/01/2022 14:19

Yes - I would 100% drop it to the vet so it could be checked for a chip and the owners' informed.

My own cat went missing recently (luckily she was fine) but my main concern was her getting run over or accidentally killed and me never finding out what had happened to her.

I wish the law would change so that became an offence to drive off after hitting a cat. It's already illegal to drive off after hitting a dog.

Thatsplentyjack · 07/01/2022 14:19

Why would you all prefer a cat to be left rotting to be eaten by wildlife?? Is that how little people value cats?

Circle of life 🤷‍♀️

NowEvenBetter · 07/01/2022 14:19

It’s a shame that the cat owners aren’t cat ‘lovers’ if they turn their animal loose to risk traffic/poison/trapped/torture/injuries/weather/other predators, instead of providing a cat-secure garden, or keeping their animal indoors.

Trying to whatabouttery about dogs, is irrelevant.

DockOTheBay · 07/01/2022 14:20

Would everyone who has replied do the same if they found a dead dog?!
Yeah I am even less likely to pick up a dead dog.

NowEvenBetter · 07/01/2022 14:21

fairy how? There’s laws about straying dogs, sadly, none to prevent cats straying

SallyWD · 07/01/2022 14:21

I absolutely love cats but am not sure I could pick up a dead cat that was in a really bad way. It would haunt me. I would post on social media etc.

Shade17 · 07/01/2022 14:21

I wish the law would change so that became an offence to drive off after hitting a cat. It's already illegal to drive off after hitting a dog.

And I take it you also want the cat’s owners to be responsible for the damage to the car?

BigYellowHat · 07/01/2022 14:22

I don’t think I’d take it to the vets. I’d feel very sorry for it but if it’s definitely dead and there’s no vet nearby then I’m not going out of my way.

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/01/2022 14:22

Why in the name of god would you take a dead cat to the vets?? If I had time and was close to home I’d stick it in a bin bag and call the council.

ShaneTheThird · 07/01/2022 14:22

No I wouldn't. It takes two seconds to put a dead cat on a verge to stop it getting more mangled it could take 20 or more minutes to drive to a vet and deal with them before getting back to work late. The cats dead it doesn't need a vet and unfortunately if you have outdoor cats it's the risk you take with them.

BlueistheNewme · 07/01/2022 14:23

I’ve voted YABU as it’s not always possible to do that.

When I sadly killed someone’s cat, I did go knocking on doors until I found the owner.

I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I had the person I care for in the car. It wouldn’t be safe to do so, and it would cause them too much distress.

There’s lots of reasons why people would be unable to do this.

Lipsandlashes · 07/01/2022 14:23

Erm no. We had a dead cat under our conifers, at the front. We Googled what to do and found out that you can call the council and they will come and remove the cat - so that’s what we did.

Hairyfriend · 07/01/2022 14:23

@jimmyhill

You take live cats to the vet. You call the council for dead cats.

Vet don't want your random dead cats!

This ^
Santaisstilleatingmincepies · 07/01/2022 14:24

It isn't an offence to drive off after hitting a ddog but the incident must be reported to the police as it is classed as a rta..
I fail to see how the driver I mentioned hasn't noticed they had hit a Labrador..
Sad

ilovepixie · 07/01/2022 14:25

Sure it's dead. It's the vet not Jesus lol.

Pyewhacket · 07/01/2022 14:25

No

Porcupineintherough · 07/01/2022 14:25

I would take an injured cat to the vets, even if I wasnt the person who injured it. I wouldnt take a dead cat, or even touch it.

I'd be happy for the law regarding cats to change, if it changes in all ways ie no more letting them out to roam.

wishuponastar1988 · 07/01/2022 14:26

Yes I would. I have found 2 dead cats last year, one when walking my dog so took her home and then went back for the cat with towels. The second was in the path when I was walking home from the gym, again went home for towels and then went to the vets. Had to leave the poor things in the porch of the vets as it was before it opened then posted on Facebook. Actually got contacted by both cat owners to say thank you. I don't know how anyone could leave them to be honest

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 07/01/2022 14:26

Yes definitely and if I was unable to then I'd contact one of the scanner people to come out and scan it. A Friend and I once found a deceased Cat that had being run over, whilst on my way for a swim. I picked it up wrapped it inside my towel and walked the 15 minute walk to the Vets for them to scan it. They scanned and contacted the owner whilst we were there

Siepie · 07/01/2022 14:26

I found a dead cat in my front garden once. It hadn't been run over, it was just elderly. I knocked on my neighbours' doors until someone knew whose cat it was, and the owners came to collect it.

If I hadn't found its owners, I don't think I'd have taken it to the vets. It wouldn't have occurred to me to take an already dead animal there. I understand poster's points about the microchip, but there's always a risk the owner hasn't kept their phone number up to date. If someone realises their cat is missing, I think they're likely to go looking for it before calling up all the local vets.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 07/01/2022 14:26

Wow i'm quite surprised at how many non cat lovers there are!

I have Cats, I love cats.

Unfortunately not long before Christmas, DP and I were out in the car, it was dark and we hit something, we were not sure what so turned round and went back, it was a cat and it was dead. Dp picked it up off the road and moved it out the way. I was going to put it on FB when we got home but by the time we got back Someone else had posted and the owner was found.

I absolutely would not have took it to an out of hours vets at 9pm on a friday night. We were both upset but done what we could.

ifonly4 · 07/01/2022 14:27

We found a dead cat on a country road while out for a walk, no car. We decided it was best to leave it by side of road in the hope the owner would find it - over the years we've often gone out checking local gardens and roads when one of ours hasn't come back, before phoning vet. However, we did phone the nearest vet to let them know in case someone phoned to enquire.

bcc89 · 07/01/2022 14:28

  1. You'd take it to the vet to be scanned for a chip. Then it can be ruined with its owner.

Why would you all prefer a cat to be left rotting to be eaten by wildlife?? Is that how little people value cats?

I'm not sure the person who posted wasn't the person who hit the cat in the first place.

Cats need to be taken to a vet. Vets do not charge to dispose at all (or they shouldn't) It's worth knowing which local vet can help.

Would everyone who has replied do the same if they found a dead dog?!

You're misdirecting your anger here. The person who hit the cat should take it to the vets. Not me, several hours later.

Said as an animal lover and I used to be the lady at the vets who would scan the dead animals in the hope of finding a microchip.
