To think you take a killed cat to the vets, not dump it on a grass verge

Post on FB says 'Found' a dead cat in the middle of the road. Couldn't do anything other than move it to the side as I was busy. " Posted the FB update five hours after doing this.

Cat had been moved about 4m from the road so quite a distance and was hidden from site (not quite sure even how they'd moved him the state he was in)

Poor thing was in a really bad way. I had to put my big girl pants on and take a lot of deep breaths before I dealt with him. I took clean towels and gave him a dignified trip to the vets.

No, I don't like picking up dead cats - particularly after losing one myself to an RTA. But AIBU to think that if you've got time to shift the cat, you've got time to take it to the vets to be scanned?? Or did they move it because they were the ones who killed it?!

Would you stop to take a deceased cat to the vets?

Wow i'm quite surprised at how many non cat lovers there are!

  1. You'd take it to the vet to be scanned for a chip. Then it can be ruined with its owner.

Why would you all prefer a cat to be left rotting to be eaten by wildlife?? Is that how little people value cats?

I'm not sure the person who posted wasn't the person who hit the cat in the first place.

Cats need to be taken to a vet. Vets do not charge to dispose at all (or they shouldn't) It's worth knowing which local vet can help.

Would everyone who has replied do the same if they found a dead dog?!

A dead cat? To the vet?

No, of course I wouldn't.

WakeUpLockie · 07/01/2022 14:01

I love cats! Much more of a cat person than a dog person. What I don’t like is dead bodies that I wasn’t involved with when alive 🤷🏻‍♀️

OldWivesTale · 07/01/2022 14:01

Why would you take a dead cat to the vets? I love animals bit wouldn't do this unless it was still alive

NewYearCalavicci · 07/01/2022 14:01

Having made the trip to my vets several times this week i know for sure it takes me at least 1.5 hrs two buses and a 10 min walk so no absoultly not .

I would post on FB , a description of the cat , the area it's in time it was found , any eles to identify it ( collar/ 3 with paws / fluffy / smooth coated etc ) there is a local rescue center near me so I would also asked them to put it on there FB page and see if they can come out and scan it .

Viviennemary · 07/01/2022 14:02

I don't think a vet would be interested in an already dead cat.

I wouldn't do anything if i found any dead animal.

Definitely not. What is the vet going to do?

Here, I'd report to the local council. They'd pick it up and scan for microchip. That's what happened last time I encountered a dead cat anyway.

Butchyrestingface · 07/01/2022 14:03

A proofread in time saves nine.

Absolutely. If I'm too squeamish for a cat, you can bet your boots I'd be too squeamish for a (probably) even larger animal. And I love, love, LOVE dogs.

Cantfindausernamethatsnottaken · 07/01/2022 14:03

I found a dead cat,no apparent injuries. It looked asleep but it was on a pavement by a main road.Concil came and said they would keep it for a week.I messaged Cats Protection and they scanned it and put it on their facebook page.I dont know if it was ever collected.(No chip.)

Sparklesocks · 07/01/2022 14:04

Have you considered that not everyone has a flexible day where they have time to do that?

People have to go to work, look after children, go to appointments etc - it’s nice if you can do that for the animal but let’s not pretend it’s possible for everyone. I don’t think many bosses consider taking a deceased animal to the vet as an acceptable reason to be late. Especially if you’re an hourly employee who could lose out on pay. And not everyone has transport to do so - and can’t get public transport potentially miles away to a carry a dead animal to the vet.

OldWivesTale · 07/01/2022 14:04

If I found a dead cat or a dog I'd post on the local Facebook group. I wouldn't take either to the vet.

PatchworkElmer · 07/01/2022 14:04

I don’t think I’d pick any dead animal up off the side of the road to be honest. I did stop and take a pigeon that had been hit to the vets, because I wouldn’t let any animal suffer in pain.

Enb76 · 07/01/2022 14:06

Would everyone who has replied do the same if they found a dead dog?!

Yes. In fact the only dead creature that I would do something different with is a human being. I would call the police in those circumstances and not move the body at all!

Lockheart · 07/01/2022 14:06

Just because people are practical doesn't mean they don't love cats.

I quite like cats but I wouldn't be prepared to pick up a random dead one and cart it around until I found a vets who'd be willing to take it.

Dogs are slightly different as if you hit one with a car you have a legal obligation to report it, with cats you don't. We don't tend to have stray dogs in this country, but we do have plenty of feral cats with no owners, especially in the country and around farms.

womaninatightspot · 07/01/2022 14:06

@jimmyhill

You take live cats to the vet. You call the council for dead cats.

Vet don't want your random dead cats!

This surely. I assume the vet would feel obligated to scan and contact owner. If uncontactable due to chip details not being in date or whatever pay to dispose of the body.

Vets not running a charity.

SW1amp · 07/01/2022 14:06

The value of a cat is not dependent on it’s funeral ffs

You value the life of a cat by treating it well when it’s alive, not having a solemn requiem for it

lochmaree · 07/01/2022 14:07

we have a cat. if I hit a cat or found an injured cat, I'd take it to the vets. if I saw a dead cat, no I wouldn't take it to the vet, I would try and post it on a local Facebook page though.

And i am suprised at how quick you are to judge people . Read my previous post and explain how I get to the vets , that do charge for the disposal.
Also before you jugde me ( and others ) have a look at my recent post in litter tray .

I don't need to know anything about local vets. I don't have pets. If you have a cat, that's your responsibility. If you let it roam, it might get hit by a car. Again, your responsibility.

I've seen countless dead cats over the years. Never a dog. Because dog owners generally do not allow their animals to roam around and run into the road, causing a distraction and a danger to road users when drivers brake and swerve to avoid them.

ABCDEF1234 · 07/01/2022 14:08

No, I wouldn't take a dead cat the vets

Cyw2018 · 07/01/2022 14:08

If you make the choice to have a pet that you then allow to roam around freely like a wild animal then you have to accept it may die like a wild animal. Moving it to the verge is considerable more dignity than the average fox, rabbit or bird gets.
