To think you take a killed cat to the vets, not dump it on a grass verge

Post on FB says 'Found' a dead cat in the middle of the road. Couldn't do anything other than move it to the side as I was busy. " Posted the FB update five hours after doing this.

Cat had been moved about 4m from the road so quite a distance and was hidden from site (not quite sure even how they'd moved him the state he was in)

Poor thing was in a really bad way. I had to put my big girl pants on and take a lot of deep breaths before I dealt with him. I took clean towels and gave him a dignified trip to the vets.

No, I don't like picking up dead cats - particularly after losing one myself to an RTA. But AIBU to think that if you've got time to shift the cat, you've got time to take it to the vets to be scanned?? Or did they move it because they were the ones who killed it?!

Would you stop to take a deceased cat to the vets?

No

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 07/01/2022 21:18

No sorry I wouldn’t, the vet can’t do anything with a dead cat. It’s better to leave it and hope the owners find it.

Injured cat, yes I’d take to vet if I could - but cats tend to run and hide when injured unless too injured to survive

there are lots of things or situations in life that are not our responsibility and yet if we have any kind of a moral compass we help or get involved because its the right thing to do ,
making up excuses because you are lacking in morals is all well and good , but it still does not excuse the fact of lacking in them that and if you are a complete asshole like a lot of people who have commented

The person in the OP moved the cat, and shared where it was etc on social media. But they are somehow lacking a moral compass because according to you, that simply is not enough.

chaosrabbitland · 07/01/2022 21:28
@chaosrabbitland you were the one who said it wasn't fair to keep them in , I was saying not fair they are out
Funny how car owners never see cat shit, its because they tend to go in peoples gardens so owner of house has to deal with it .
However you look at it if you have a pet it is your responsibility not someone elses and that includes taking it to a vet
Someone even moving it and posting on facebook is something it saves cat getting more squished , expecting people to put them in car and take them to a vet is expecting too much , nice of someone does it but to expect it as standard no ,
Your pet your responsibility
and i have said you dont seem to have any clue about the nature of cats or their needs , and no my neighbour has not told me about cat shit in her garden , but i know she would as shes quite forthright , but most people in the uk see ten times more dog shit than they ever do cat

no one has said its others responsiblity to take a deceased cat to the vet , i mean if the owner of the cat knew than obviously they would duh . its just the nice decent thing to do , to give the owners of the cat if its chipped the orportunity to arrange a buriel or cremation and save them a lifetime of wondering what happened to their cat

i expect by that definition of responsiblity if there was an old dear dead on a path from a heart attack or some damn thing no one saying they wouldnt bother with a cat would just go past and think oh well shes not my family or resposiblity and it means i will be late if i stay here and start ringing the emergency services , no that would be different because its a human where as cats are just animals and not worthy of being cared about or having a decent thing done like not leaving them there to rot ,
judging by the comments on here the old adge about the english being a nation of animal lovers is a load of shite
more like a nation comprised largely of absolute wankers
thankfully there are some lovely people on here who have done what i would have done , that have some kindness and love for animals

Yea a cat’s not comparable to a human.

well i personally beg to differ , id wager my cats are a hundred times more worthy than some of the people commenting on this thead , but still i was making a comparison and yes i get by most people they arent , but its obvious by a lot of the comments on here that cats and most likely animals in general are regarded as little better than disposable trash really

How would that allow them to roam?

Disposable trash... like the animals that died to make the food you give your cats.

Hangthetowels · 07/01/2022 21:50

No - definitely not..always have the baby in the car with me, and it would be such a faff to pick up a dead animal and find a vet.

Different story if it was my car however - probably would sort it then.

CoastalWave · 07/01/2022 21:55

@Beautiful3

If you see a dead cat around here, you call the council. They bag it up and remove it.
Yes, and bin it. They do not scan the animal at all. They're under no obligation at all to do so.

So the cat gets cremated without the owner even knowing.

How awful to lose your pet and have absolutely zero closure and the pain of 'not knowing'

it is a pity that my cats arent herbivores like our bunnies , but they arent and theres not a lot i can do to change that other than to get rid of my cats which would never happen , i dont like that any animal has to die for food , so it makes no odds that you have this cheap dig at me really , its just that a cheap dig as you dont have a clue how i feel about aninals that are killed to be food for others
Seemssounfair · 07/01/2022 22:01

I am not a cat lover, but I would go out of my way to help any injured cat or other animal, I would not take a clearly dead one to a vets. I would post on local fb.

The cat is dead, not in pain, so nothing to do with being an animal lover or not. Cats don't give a shit if they get buried/cremated or eaten 🤦🏻‍♀️

It is the risk cat owners take with a free roaming pet, one day they might not come home.

The pp who compared waking past a dead cat to walking past a dead human needs some sort of therapy.

and why would i need therapy ? because i happen to hold animals in a slightly higher regard than other humans , and by and large i tend to not like a lot of people in general , but i always like all animals , and it was just that a comparison btw , its funny how serious everybodys taking it and assuming im mentally ill lol

@fairylightsandwaxmelts

Yes - I would 100% drop it to the vet so it could be checked for a chip and the owners' informed.

My own cat went missing recently (luckily she was fine) but my main concern was her getting run over or accidentally killed and me never finding out what had happened to her.

I wish the law would change so that became an offence to drive off after hitting a cat. It's already illegal to drive off after hitting a dog.

Did you train your cat to be traffic aware before you allowed it out to Risk?
Whatinthelord · 07/01/2022 22:11

People aren’t forced to own cats. People choose to own cats, despite the knowledge that a great number of cats are killed by cars. Maybe people need to act more responsibly when choosing a pet, especially if they live in a city/town, if they feel so strongly about cats being harmed by cats. Cats aren’t an endangered species…in fact cats often kill wild animals/birds. Yet everyone else is expected to treat then differently from any other animal because you like cats?

I’m guessing most cat owners aren’t vegans….or ethically consuming to reduce their impact on wildlife around the world…..yet everyone should take extra care with the cat they chose to have and was bred especially as a pet, despite knowing how likely it is they will wonder and be hit by a car.

Take responsibility for the animals YOU CHOOSE to own and choose to contribute to the breeding of.

twisting my words there muchly arent you lol . i never in any of my post said these people were animal haters , lacking empathy and assholes yes , but i never said oh they must hate animals , and i did not i believe quote a poster who said these people should die alone and in pain , honestly get it fucking right would i have said and havent , obviously a cat already dead which is the point of the thread is already died in pain no . thats the point of the thread about taking an already dead cat to the vets , hope thats cleared it up for you

and no i dont have a clue about others lives and whats going on in theirs , all i know is mine is very busy and im not very well sometimes , but hey still try and do the nice thing , because i do care about animals and know they might have an owner who loves them like i love mine

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/01/2022 22:20

I think the "won't scan" thing must vary from council to council OP. When my girl went missing I phoned the council weekly for a while, as well as the local vet practices (till I eventually gave up), just in case the body was too messed up to find her chip easily. The people I spoke to at my council said they automatically scan all dogs and cats that are found dead on the road and collected (as well as being quite helpful with descriptions of cats they'd found where they couldn't find a chip).

5foot5 · 07/01/2022 23:09

1. You'd take it to the vet to be scanned for a chip. Then it can be ruined with its owner.

Sounds like it was already ruined without its owner

milkysmum · 08/01/2022 00:04

No I wouldn't think to take a dead cat to a vet I'll be honest.

BestZebbie · 08/01/2022 00:50

Isn't part of leaving a dead cat on the verge so that other people can visit to establish that it isn't their own missing cat, too?

We seem to have a constant stream of black cats and tabbies going missing on our local facebook, then every so often someone finds one in their shed/catches one that has been visiting their garden and two or three people have to go round and see if it is their cat or not!

I don't have pets. I wouldn't know where my local vet is, or what the procedures are. Also how would you know its the right vet? Cats travel far. Moving a cat so it wouldn't get trampled on, I could do.
