Household of 5: 2 adults, 3 DC.

I can - when everyone else has had a go - rework the loading of the dishwasher so that EVERYTHING fits in, rather than leaving a mountain of dirty stuff on the side (like the rest of the household) ready for the next cycle.

AIBU to ask what is your particular set of skills? Skills you have acquired over a very long career.*

*Yes I've quoted Liam Neeson...

Everytime I leave the house I've forgotten something.

Not a skill, more of a life-long burden.

But over the decades it's kept my weight down running back to the house for the forgotten item Grin

I’m also very good at googling as PPs
Can always find my way out of a wood/forest (but always get disoriented and lost in urban areas)
Can guess shoe size and height at a glance
Can get immediately to the heart of a problem and simplify it to basic need/solution.

Brilliant thread!

ELCismyspiritnana · 07/01/2022 00:16

Oh I can also balance washing up on the drainer so I don’t have to dry anything despite washing all the dishes I own (known as washing up Jenga)

InsanityOf2020 · 07/01/2022 01:03

I can tell anyone in my son the exact location the thing he is looking for, without stopping what i am doing to think about it

I am a dab hand at untangling slinkies

And my party trick is guessing peoples middle names correctly when presented witht their first name, middle initial and surname.

BookFiend4Life · 07/01/2022 01:09

OP I am also a dishwasher genius.

My other special skill is that I know when a tampon is about to overflow, like at least 25% of the time.

Anordinarymum · 07/01/2022 11:25

@Sebastianthecoo

I’m really good at putting the empty toilet roll in the bin and the new one on the holder. In my small survey of a family of 6 it seems I’m the only person able to do this, so it must be quiet rare.

Ditto finding things in the places everyone else has looked and it absolutely cannot see it.

It is indeed a rare talent :)
Piglet89 · 07/01/2022 17:04

Oh, I’m also good at reverse parking and accurate estimates of the time without looking at a timepiece.

I can accurately identify a song I have heard just by listening to the first couple of seconds, even with background noise.

I’m a grammar ninja and a great mimic.

However, I have THE WORST sense of direction of anyone you’ll ever meet.

BookFiend4Life · 07/01/2022 17:20

Ooh thought of another one, I always pick the exact right size of tupperware for leftovers!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/01/2022 18:01

I can recognise actors on TV who have been on something else, even if it was 30 years earlier and had a minor part. I'm also an expert at catching chickens!

^^
I’m not very good at this but I’m good at recognising actors from their voice overs in cartoons. When this isn’t a well known cartoon that everyone knows the cast of I mean!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/01/2022 18:02

But on the flip side I can never tell which direction sounds are coming from. Hate it when I hear an ambulance siren for example as I never know if it’s behind me (until it’s in view in the mirror) or on a side road or coming towards me (but out of view).

Appreciating the housework and cooking done by others. I keep trying to remember how the vacuum cleaner works, but it has so many buttons and levers and the noise is so scary, that my husband gets very impatient with explaining it to me. And since he's so good at using a big heavy manly machine like that, I really appreciate how he does such a good job of making the carpets looking so nice. I don't know how I'd get those stripey marks like he does. If I did it, I'm sure they'd just go in circles. But when he does it, it looks like a soldier did it. So perfect. He's like a vacuuming superhero. I also don't quite get all those household cleaners. Like which one does which? They're such harsh chemicals and I think I need some extra help. Thank god my husband sorts me out by doing the cleaning for me because I'm sure I would do the wrong thing and he makes everything sooooo sparkly. He's amazing. And as for cooking, knives sure look dangerous...

  • I’m very good at guiding people to where they need to go by taking then there, but I’m useless at giving directions.
  • Remembering songs that I’ve sung in school. When I meet up with old friends, they’re often amazed that I still remember them.
  • I used to be good at remembering names and faces even the ones from infant and juniour school, but ever since I’ve stopped worrying what others think of me and stopped kicking myself for every foot-in-the-mouth moment, I’ve lost that skill. I remember a handful of people in different stages of my life, who have had an impact in my life in some shape or form, and the rest are just a vague blur.

I'm another great parallel parker. Basically if the car will go in with about 6 inches either end I can get it in the space. Had a Vauxhall Vectra Estate for years and wouldn't pay for parking so used to street park and move it every 2 hours. Often got people watching in a 'you'll never get it in' way 😊

Also, great at remembering telephone numbers (can recite numbers for all the local law firms/Government Departments/Estate Agents etc), bank card numbers, internet banking numbers all in my head.

I have a great deal of common sense as well and find it easy to work out practical solutions to problems.

Bloodybridget · 08/01/2022 02:47

Providing blood samples; I have excellent veins which earn me approving comments from phlebotomists!

Bloodybridget · 08/01/2022 02:48

But I guess that's an attribute rather than a skill. Oh dear. Can't think of anything else!

Bloodybridget · 08/01/2022 02:49

When I food shop, I will set myself a budget and will always be able to buy everything I need usually to the pound, without paying attention to the price of things. I can also guess exactly how many bags I will need for said shop.

Squidwitch · 20/03/2022 19:02

I can rearrange the furniture in over twenty different layouts. I'd rather rearrange the room than clean it as it is. The monotony of wiping the same furniture is awful. Also, it's a fantastic procrastination tool

Arniesleftleg · 13/04/2023 18:09

Being super anxious!

Techie problem solver. Anything machinery, computers, apps etc I can sort out. I have no clue how I just find the answer whilst everyone else scratches their heads
