He arrived in AUS, and it turns out his management team have applied for the incorrect VISA - Hence his refused entry.

Which seems really unlikely given the number of times he’s been before and how many times his team will be applying for visas to play.

It seems to me his exemption was accepted for the Visa application but they’ve found a loophole now to void it because Morrison threw a grown up tantrum.

lljkk · 06/01/2022 10:08

An Aussie reporter said that Djok got his exemption after anonymous review by a 6 person panel who looked at his application not knowing who he was (not his sex or age or name). I don't care about Primadonna performers, but I suspect that Djok is getting special treatment only now due to political reasons -- he's being targeted to not get an exemption that others got, just for political reasons that suit baying mob mentality & political ambitions.

Which would be shit, really.

I wonder if Aussie reporter was completely misinformed.

Would be very happy to learn nothing ever again about this story.

whynotwhatknot · 06/01/2022 10:09

Hes appealing apprently on what grounds i dont know

if he gets let in so should the other unvaxxed players

IcedPurple · 06/01/2022 10:10

Djokovic has always been arrogant and probably thinks rules don't apply to him.

However, the Australians initially granted him a visa and seem to have only backpeddled due to public anger. The 'wrong type of visa' thing seems like a hasty excuse to me, but I'm open to correction on this.

If they had refused his request from the start I'd have had more respect from them. I don't think either 'side' comes out particularly well.

That was the Tennis Australia-organised panel, wasn’t it, to determine exemptions to participate in the tournament?

That’s not how exemptions for entry to the country work, however.

BoredZelda · 06/01/2022 10:13

According to this morning's Guardian he's a full-on obscurant including associations with extreme nationalist mythmakers of the vilest sort.

This piece says nothing of the sort.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 06/01/2022 10:15

He's a total nob.
Always was and always will be.

For once in my life, I agree with Scott Morrison.

Well, we'll wait and see what his appeal result is.
Sagealicious · 06/01/2022 10:18

Team Oz. Novak is a fucking drongo.

Ask Victorians how they feel about him after being locked down for so long.

Ask all those people who lost their jobs and their businesses how they feel.

Ask people on the NSW/Queensland border who were only metres away from their loved ones but weren't allowed near each other how they feel

Ask Aussies who were stranded overseas for a long time who weren't allowed to return home.

Ask the people from overseas who haven't been allowed to come here to see their family and friends for over 2 years.

Ask the people who were denied entry to the country (or another state) to attend the funeral of a loved one

etc etc

This is just a few reasons why so many of us Aussies are annoyed/angry. The rules keep changing depending on who it is and it's not just during Covid that this happens. Look at the debacle Johnny Depp and Amber Herd caused when they tried to bring their dogs here by thinking they could bypass the law(Australia has strict biosecurity rules for a reason). Thank goodness they were shown the door.

It's pure arrogance to think you can waltz into any country and defy their laws simply because you don't agree with them. If you're not sure what is or isn't allowed when visiting a country then there's an interesting thing you can do beforehand and that's called research. It ain't hard.

Alondra · 06/01/2022 10:22

In a way, I'd like the Court to fall in his favour and watch the Melbournian's wrath fall on him..i'll be apoteosic.

Funnily, I've always liked Nole. I think he's a faboulous tennis player, incredibly charming. I just don't like his anti vaccine stand and his challenge Australian law because "I'm Djokovic and can do so". It rubbs me the wrong way.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 06/01/2022 10:22

All anti vaxxers should read this thread, and many others like it, to to see what the vaccinated think of the unvaccinated generally around the world

Nothing to do with vaccination. But he needs to follow the rules, he isn't special despite thinking he is.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 06/01/2022 10:23

I think whatever his views, he has utterly failed to read the room.
Apart from a small number of media savy anti vaxxers the huge majority of Australians have endured state and national lockdowns and don't like people who flout the rules for their own benefits
He needs to get a grip of his ego

StartupRepair · 06/01/2022 10:24

I can't convey how much anger there is in Australia about Novak. If he gets permission to play - it is now in court- then he will be booed throughout.
A few weird aspects. Novak's father suggested that Australians would riot on the streets to support his son.
Also Novak is currently being held in an illegal entry hotel. Also there are some asylum seekers who have been detained for years. It would be great if the Serbian supporters would highlight this issue.

Butchyrestingface · 06/01/2022 10:28

A lot of dilly and dallying by Australia, and I can't help but think the volte face is a result of all the public backlash. So they are unreasonable for that.

On the other hand, Djokovic is such a fanny, I have no sympathy for him.

AgentJohnson · 06/01/2022 10:29

He is either qualified for an exemption or did not. Australia has embarrassed itself by giving him an exemption and then terminating his visa upon arrival.

MatildaJayne · 06/01/2022 10:32

Djokovic is unreasonable, but Australia shouldn't have let him in in the first place.

Aprilx · 06/01/2022 10:32

He applied for a visa that doesn’t cover tennis players

Don’t be so naive. They don’t have visas that exclude tennis players!

His name is pretty recognisable, the tennis event is coming up and lots of tennis players applying right now and not many others. His visa was granted deliberately.

awaynboilyurheid · 06/01/2022 10:32

Well done Australia!
So glad it wasn’t here or the US as I fear we would cave in and allow him in after all he’s a “celebrity” and for some more that’s important than protecting the health of others. Selfish arrogant and misinformed, delighted he’s not being allowed to enter.

I get this argument Sage. But absolutely none of those things are Novak’s fault. They are all the fault of the Australian government and the States and their nonsensical rules. No other country is the world stopped their own citizens from returning home and I am not sure there is another country in the world that stopped internal travel like Australia did. That’s on the government not Novak. Presumably he applied for his visa and got it. It’s not like he is just a random person do presumably when his visa was issued it was issued to him knowing his anti vaccine position. The visa should not have been issued in the first place if there was going to be a later problem with it. Novak didn’t issue his own visa Confused It’s ridiculous to have such tight border controls now anyway when NSW had more cases per million that the U.K. yesterday. And that’ll be the case in most large cities in Australia pretty soon. It’s like trying to hold back the tide
Skinnytailedsquirrel · 06/01/2022 10:35

He's an arrogant twat. Good on Australia keeping him out.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 06/01/2022 10:37

Ban the best player in the world? Fuckers. Issuing a visa then denying entry at the airport, after that huge flight? Beyond rude. I hope he never bothers again.

I am sure this will please the Wimbledon wankers who boo Nova, though.

IcedPurple · 06/01/2022 10:39

@jay55

How was he allowed on the plane without the right paperwork? Usually airlines are super strict especially for Australia.
Do we know that he flew commercial? I'd expect that someone like him, who travels with an entourage, would have flown by private jet.
milkyaqua · 06/01/2022 10:41

He flew Emirates.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 06/01/2022 10:43

I am in Oz and don't know anyone who wants him here. We have all played by the rules, forgoing foreign travel, and there is no way this arrogant shit should be allowed to bend the rules.
