Just been reading an article about this and it inspired me to start a a thread. What has your boss said or done that has made you want to quit on the spot.

Mine was to a colleague of mine, his apartment complex was on fire and it was spreading along to his row, he was evacuated and came into work to grab some things, we all knew what had happened and was all sad for him as he had children, my manager asked him to sort out her computer as he was our IT guy, he basically told her not right now he had bigger things to worry about and she stormed back into our office threw a stop, saying can you believe him, he is too busy to help and I bet he says it's because his flat is on fire. We all sat there like Confused
Safe to say we didn't expect any compassion from her in regards to our personal life.

Told my manager I couldn't complete the project with the budget cuts she was proposing. I was told to lower my standards. We were already running on a shoestring.

'Claims to have developed arthritis in response to capability procedures. As too young, please establish falsehood or mental illness.'

Ah you found yourself a twat in the mould of my old boss who thought I was faking it. Apparently being 22 is a magic age which protects against any illness.

The most worrying thing I find as an arthritis patient is how many HCPs say 'you're a bit young for that aren't you?'.

Mum was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in her 20s and Dad the same in his 30s. Mine is psoriatic.

Reading some of these I am not sure which is more arrogant; what was said in the first place or the fact they put it in writing.

I was five when I first had issues - mine's now been confirmed psoriatic as well.

I can't help to wonder, why are so many managers either utterly bonkers or really nasty? Are the managers described on this thread just generally nasty people? Did they get a bit of power and went totally crazy? Did they learn from a bad example and think this is the way a boss is supposed to behave?

I'm a manager and I treat people with respect and common decency., because it's really not that hard.

These are awful!

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea thee see ya just chilling.

I left employment for much less (sexism, gaslighting, underpaying) and happily work for myself.

Working for arseholes like this is like being in an abusive relationship.

MissCrowley · 07/01/2022 17:54

Worst one was a married man who was trying to crack on.
Told me we'd be great pals, in order for us to get to know each other he'd book us a hotel room for the night and to dress up with heels.
I waited for him to pay me that day (which was absolute peanuts and not even min wage, I packed up my desk and drive home. Blocked his number and email and never heard from him again. He's lucky I didn't try and find out who his wife was so I could tell her what a slime ball she'd married!

@Mugcake

In January this year I had a MC and then my dad died suddenly of covid in aguust. Both times I've taken (unpaid leave) as a MC isn't sick leave apparently. This ment I had to go back asap as I couldn't afford to take time off. They did give a week as compassionate leave when my dad was ill but the two further weeks I took off were annual leave/unpaid. I have been told multiple times how lucky I am to have had so much time off this year and how lucky I was to have work as a distraction. Even before Xmas when I said I was looking forward to having a break I was told how lucky I was to have time off over the summer. If I wasn't pregnant and needed maternity leave (which is only statutory as it is) I would have quit. They also told me how crap my work was after my dad had died and used it in my most recent review to berate me even though they admitted there were no current issue with my work.
@Mugcake I’m really sorry to hear this, I don’t know if you’ll remember me but we were messaging at the time and then you told me you needed some time after finding out about your miscarriage. I’ve thought about you often and I haven’t seen you on here for a while. I’m sorry to hear about your Dad x
Mugcake · 20/01/2022 18:12

@bigdreamer9 hi :) it's so nice to hear from you! I did think about messaging you to ask how your little one is as we were due at the same time. But after everything that happened I never got round to it. I hope everything is OK? I'm now 20 weeks pregnant with another little one :) x

Bigdreamer9 · 20/01/2022 19:02

@Mugcake that is such lovely news! I’ll send you a PM

One of mine was annoyed with me for having authorised something that needed her approval (I hadn't realised). I apologised, but she held onto it for months and would sit there swaying in her chair singing "you really piiiiiisssed me offfff, (my name)".

Same boss also used to go on about how terrible British employees are (she was from the US) because we would dare to leave the office before our boss. Apparently in the US everyone would wait for their boss to leave even if their contracted hours had ended. Not sure if that's true.

southlondonerhere · 07/04/2022 10:12

A year ago I was in my bosses office and she shut the door and told me that she thought I had gained weight.. i said nothing and she said 'so have you?' .. I'm a 27 year old woman who weighs 9 and a half stone at 5"6...

She also came into work knowing she had covid before the rules changed

I've just been offered a new job so will be handing in my notice!

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 07/04/2022 10:39

Years ago, one of my bosses asked the team to work over Xmas, with no extra pay. So I objected, I was told you either work or you're sacked.

Nowomenaroundeh · 07/04/2022 11:18

I didn't quit out loud but silently made the decision to move to a competitor asap when this happened.

I worked in a very competitive industry. I consistently over achieved on my targets and was considered a high performer in the company. I often mentored struggling staff. I put in lots of extra hours. I loved my work.

Recession came and with it lots of doom and gloom. I continued to work hard and maintained billing if not quite at the level I had before. My boss unceremoniously sacked over half our teammates, unprofessionally and also illegally (did not follow protocal and forged review documents.) I said nothing but I knew one said employee was planning to take legal action. The letter arrived to the office by courier and the boss flew into a rage.

He summoned me into the boardroom and interrogated me. I told the truth; I did know but not for long. No I did not encourage it. No I did not try to talk him out of it, it wasn't my place. I didn't want to be involved at all and was clear about that.

The boss glared at me then asked me about my pipeline for that month. (It was ok, not fantastic but far better than anyone else.)

He then suggested I spend more time on the phone to clients and less time "stuffing my face" then proceeded to mimic me shoving food in my mouth and said looking across the room eating peanuts the day before had put him in bad humour. The mimicking me then began again.

That was it for me and him.

I left, got a new job, progressed at break neck speed within the industry and spent five happy years with him pitching for my business.
