Me unreasonable or him

So today i took my children to a park we visit regularly- they wanted an ice cream from the van and I usually get a coffe from the shop/ hut and sit on the chairs outside or benches. Today i fancied an ice cream, it was really cold bitter so to escape the wind we sat on the chairs. The man popped his head out the hut and shouted customers only, bare in mind it wasn’t busy there was about 4-5 empty tables with chairs around.
I said oh we are trying to escape the wind,
He said again customers only in an abrupt way. I said the money I’ve spent here over the years, he then shouted customers only, the kids will get ice cream all over the seats.
The seats were metal plus there was 2 toddlers on the next table with ice creams, my dc are older.
He gestured to us to move so we got up, i said i wont be coming here again
He said good!
After that we ended up going to the car as the wind really was bitter

You were being unreasonable.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 04/01/2022 17:46

I’m with him.

You wouldn’t eat your ice cream in a local cafe. To him it’s the same.

He probably sick of ice cream people sitting on his benches. They’re for his customers.

RedCandyApple · 04/01/2022 17:47

I do think you was unreasonable I would have just got a drink or something

LittleBirdBlu · 04/01/2022 17:47

You are in the wrong here

DroopyClematis · 04/01/2022 17:48

Unless there's a sign saying' cafe customers only' then it shouldn't really matter.

However , at busy times, you would probably be unreasonable to sit there.

Suggest you buy a packet of polo mints next time just to shut his beak.

CrushedPistachios · 04/01/2022 17:49

Yabu.

mbosnz · 04/01/2022 17:49

While he was technically in the right, he's lost at least you as a customer, and anyone local you tell, that might be inclined to also give him the swerve in future, based on your account.

TrashyPanda · 04/01/2022 17:49

That was cheeky of you.

supersop60 · 04/01/2022 17:50

You could have got a coffee and sat there legitimately.

HerRoyalHappiness · 04/01/2022 17:50

YABU

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/01/2022 17:51

I think you were really cheeky.

If you’d wanted to sit there you should have chosen a drink from the cafe instead.

He’s probably sick to the back teeth of people doing this.

ParkingDiagram · 04/01/2022 17:57

You were unreasonable to sit on his chairs without being a customer. However, I can’t get over the fact you had ice cream outside on such a cold day! Grin

Potatodrivers · 04/01/2022 17:58

Yabu. You cant just plant yourself at random people's businesses to escape the wind and expect to be allowed to stay.
You wouldn't do this if it was indoor.

Then to argue with him afterwards and tell him you'll never go again. Wow. Definitely bu lol

Ballstothewall · 04/01/2022 18:03

He was being a bit overzealous on a cold day when it was empty but you were in the wrong- if he lets one group sit with ice creams then others might expect to as well. You should've asked or just left when he first asked, not argued.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/01/2022 18:03

I can’t get over the fact you had ice cream outside on such a cold day!

I was thinking this too! Or at least that a hot drink would be preferable!

Gazelda · 04/01/2022 18:07

I think you were unreasonable.
You were using facilities while not making a purchase from his business.
He could have, in kindness, let it slide.
But he didn't and you were then a rude (non)customer.

MimiBaker · 04/01/2022 18:09

Tbh I always disliked customers like you. Think that just because you gave us some business, you can do what you like.

If you wanted to sit there you should have purchased a drink.

Vallmo47 · 04/01/2022 18:12

Your rude exchange (both sides) was unnecessary, but you are being unreasonable to use his premises without making a purchase there. It doesn’t matter if it was quiet - he needs to be consistent throughout the year or else anyone will argue they can use it whenever. How embarrassing for you to argue you’re a valuable customer other times…. Cringe. That’s something you’d think inside your head as you shake it off, but never say.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 04/01/2022 18:14

YABU.

You wouldn't have walked into a café and done this - IMO this is no different. If you want to take up their seating, you need to buy something.

Waspsarearseholes · 04/01/2022 18:14

You lost any and all arguments when you tried to claim that you had every right to sit there because you were once a customer, and then tell him you wouldn't go there again. I think you've embarrassed yourself here, not the cafe owner.

colourfulpuddles · 04/01/2022 18:20

YABVU. It doesn’t matter how much money you’ve spent there over the years; that’s totally irrelevant and really twattish of you to say.

If you wanted to sit there, you should have bought something.

Kite22 · 04/01/2022 18:25

I am surprised you have to ask.
You can't buy food from one place then go and sit at another cafe's chairs for them to clean up after you when you've not even bought anything. Confused

WorriedGiraffe · 04/01/2022 18:26

The fact the chairs are metal is irrelevant really, if you’d spilt ice cream on them it would have been down to him to clean it up even though you hadn’t bought anything from him. Ultimately his his business and his rules, he said you couldn’t sit there and you were rude to him for it, YABU.

TheFlis12345 · 04/01/2022 18:26

So you said you wanted to sit there to avoid the cold… as you ate ice creams on the coldest day in weeks? ConfusedNo wonder he thought you were a chancer! And yes YABU.

MoniJitchell · 04/01/2022 18:30

Oh my god, I can't believe you had the brass neck to sit in a premises that you hadn't purchased from then to actually argue when asked to move. The sense of entitlement Confused
