Disgusted by excessive Xmas treats!

My kids are doing a final clear up before going back to school tomorrow, and 8yo trotted off to fetch her Xmas sweet haul which she had forgotten about and therefore barely touched.

Seeing it all laid out I am absolutely astounded by the amount of chocolate/sweets she has accumulated. (Even more horrified to realise that 5yo currently has a pile half this size despite receiving the same stuff as her elder sister!) This is over the last month alone. She also has two large tins full of the sweets she's been given at parties and Hallowe'en etc. I don't think our friends or family are particularly big on sweets so guess lots of little or one-off things have just accumulated.

AIBU to be a bit taken aback by the amount she's received? And what do other people do with it all? I don't think she'll get through it all but seems a waste to bin it.

It really isn't a huge amount! If it's bothering you so much then loads of different options
You Eat it
Children eat it
Donate to food bank
Ignore it!

Falifornia · 04/01/2022 15:31

@Boofay

My 3 year old could bosh this in one sitting.

Lol.

I gave ds2 (14) a jar filled with Jelly Belly jelly beans in his favourite flavour, fully expecting them to last at least a couple of weeks.

Nope.

Not even close. Grin

To maintain his balance though, I've nobly eaten my way through nearly all the chocolates/panettone/biscuits/cakes etc. It is My Duty. Halo

RallySooney · 04/01/2022 15:32

Nice little haul.

AliveAndSleeping · 04/01/2022 15:32

@PinkPomeranian

Well no, I'm not really horrified but that does seem to be the best way to get a response here. Wink

I'm more surprised by the amount and wondering what other people do with it all. She really won't get through it all, and the rest of us have received our own generous amounts as well. So really I'm asking what you do with all the excess, and how to manage the amount coming in. I'd rather it didn't go to waste.

DD rarely eats any chocolate she gets. dh and me do. Blush
LalalalalalaLand123 · 04/01/2022 15:32

There's not that much there, tbh

stingofthebutterfly · 04/01/2022 15:32

That's nothing compared to what my kids got given, but even my 2 year old knows that she has to ration it.

I'm surprised that these sort of posts still shock me, to an extent.

DirectionToPerfection · 04/01/2022 15:33

It's sad that the competitive under-eating trend on MN is now going through the kids by proxy. FFS!

OnaBegonia · 04/01/2022 15:33

A child said it was too much 👀👀
This isn't much, two of mine had multiple tins (heroes etc) and plenty of others, they just slowly get eaten.
Your ridiculous reaction and making a post of it with your kids is how good issues start.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/01/2022 15:33

I'm desperately hoping no child ways that many sweets and chocolates in a few weeks. Months maybe. I actually do think it's an awful lot of sugar. I'm sure lots of kids would, doesn't mean that their wants have to be met.

Sweets run from Xmas to Easter (check dates and clear anything that's looking past it) then Easter to Halloween (see what can be put into the Halloween tub for other kids), then Halloween to Christmas (check dates etc).

Doesn't she like chocolate?

SlashBeef · 04/01/2022 15:34

Please be aware of how your attitude to food will trickle down to your child. It's not normal to be so horrified by some chocolate. Let her eat it, give some away, whatever. Just don't make a big thing of it. It's just food.

Skyeheather · 04/01/2022 15:34

We tell DC that's all they are getting until Easter. Easter is mid April this year so it's got to last four months until the bunny comes! Lots of their sweets have a use by date of July/August so no rush to eat any of it.

Things like Smarties can be used as cake decorations if your kids like baking?

We use chocolate coins as rewards sometimes, "I'll give you a coin if you take the cups into the kitchen" sort of thing. The kids don't realise it's their Christmas coins!

You could always eat some yourself if they wouldn't notice?

Ours always get loads because every relative always throws in a bag of chocolate coins, a chocolate Santa or a selection box in with their present and it all mounts up!

Estella1841 · 04/01/2022 15:34

Not gonna lie, I could probably do that lot in one sitting with a brew.

Dixiechickonhols · 04/01/2022 15:34

My slimming world used to have a chocolate collection for hospice after Christmas. Not sure with covid whether they would accept it now.

Wheredidthequietgo · 04/01/2022 15:34

Generally, what people do with it all, is eat it.

BoredZelda · 04/01/2022 15:35

Is that all?

Thatsplentyjack · 04/01/2022 15:35

It's just like a bottle of gin- you don't drink it all in one go!

Sorry, what?

1forAll74 · 04/01/2022 15:35

I would take it out of the house, and give some treats to a care home near to you, for the oldies and the staff to enjoy.. make some people happy!

grapewine · 04/01/2022 15:36

I want chocolate Santas now...

lunar1 · 04/01/2022 15:36

Wait until the cover of darkness, on the stroke of midnight, dig a hole deep enough in the garden that no poor animals will dig it up and be exposed to such horrors, bury the wretched collection where it will never see the light of day again.

It's winter so nights are long, you have plenty of time to construct a striking water feature on top of the crime scene.

Your family will regale each other with tales of your heroism for generations.

I think I need a stick of celery to calm my nerves.

PinkPomeranian · 04/01/2022 15:37

Thanks for the people who gave useful suggestions.

I wasn't familiar with Olio but that sounds like a good option. Would a food bank mind about seasonal items? I wasn't sure if it was a bit off to offload that kind of thing on them?

We don't do a lot of baking but we could make Easter nests or something closer to the time.

I take the point about chocolate lasting beyond its BBE but we do always seem to receive lots of lovely Easter eggs as well so I guess part of the reason I'm asking is because I don't want a cupboard full of chocolate. Our kitchen isn't that big and I need the space.

Arsewangry · 04/01/2022 15:37

Crikey my boys would easily snaffle that in one sitting.

DisforDarkChocolate · 04/01/2022 15:37

Pretty sure this is a post by someone who is going to give a children an eating disorder.

Its just been Christmas, relax and focus on something else.

LuckyAmy1986 · 04/01/2022 15:38

I was expecting to see way more than this! My DD doesn't have a massive sweet tooth, she will have a little every now and then though. The rest of this household would easily eat this over a Fri, Sat and Sunday evening while watching movies. EASILY
