Disgusted by excessive Xmas treats!

My kids are doing a final clear up before going back to school tomorrow, and 8yo trotted off to fetch her Xmas sweet haul which she had forgotten about and therefore barely touched.

Seeing it all laid out I am absolutely astounded by the amount of chocolate/sweets she has accumulated. (Even more horrified to realise that 5yo currently has a pile half this size despite receiving the same stuff as her elder sister!) This is over the last month alone. She also has two large tins full of the sweets she's been given at parties and Hallowe'en etc. I don't think our friends or family are particularly big on sweets so guess lots of little or one-off things have just accumulated.

AIBU to be a bit taken aback by the amount she's received? And what do other people do with it all? I don't think she'll get through it all but seems a waste to bin it.

"Excessive"???
Why is she not allowed to slowly work her way through it..if course she will get through it eventually unless it is magic self-replenishing chocolate.
Lighten up.

Angel2702 · 04/01/2022 15:05

That doesn’t seem an excessive amount at all, mine have far more than that. They just eat it gradually usually instead of pudding and it usually lasts until the Easter influx.

PinkPomeranian · 04/01/2022 15:06

@girlmom21

How will she not get through that when she's clearly already had half the selection box?
She's just put some of the selection box items in the jar with the other smaller things like chocolate coins. They're all much smaller than they were when I was a kid!

There's really not much there.
Put it in the cupboard and let her have one occasionally when she fancies something sweet.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 04/01/2022 15:07

Is this a new thing, kids getting chocolate at Christmas time?
Seriously though could you put some by and use it for baking, icing biscuits etc on a rainy day?

Nidan2Sandan · 04/01/2022 15:07

Chocolate has a pretty decent shelf life. Just work through it over the coming months.

Is it really that hard to work out what to do with it that you had to ask on MN, or did you hope people would join you in faux horror and disgust? Grin

RJnomore1 · 04/01/2022 15:07

It’s mostly sugar - it will keep for months? What’s the problem? Not even enough chocolate there to make crispie cakes with poor child!

WorraLiberty · 04/01/2022 15:08

@PinkPomeranian

Well no, I'm not really horrified but that does seem to be the best way to get a response here. Wink

I'm more surprised by the amount and wondering what other people do with it all. She really won't get through it all, and the rest of us have received our own generous amounts as well. So really I'm asking what you do with all the excess, and how to manage the amount coming in. I'd rather it didn't go to waste.

You really need to ask what other people do with food they don't want?
MarshmallowFondant · 04/01/2022 15:08

You do understand that she doesn't have to eat it all at once, don't you?

How is it going to "go to waste"? There's no law saying you can't eat a chocolate santa in March. Or melt it down and make brownies. That is not a lot of chocolate in your photo by anyone's standards, unless you're hoping to start one of those competitive undereating threads where people post that they have one lick of a chocolate button on 1st Jan and that's them full up until Easter.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 04/01/2022 15:08

@Fatgalslim

Bloody hell, calm your farm it's a bit of bloody chocolate, no-one's asking her to eat it all at once just spread it out over the next few weeks
Exactly!

I don't understand why you're saying she won't get through it all or it'll go to waste. She doesn't have to eat it all at once, it'll last for weeks!

DirectionToPerfection · 04/01/2022 15:08

She really won't get through it all?

You're talking as if it's a mountain of chocolate, it's a fairly small amount that can be eaten over a week or two. If she's not that interested in it, fair enough, but stop making out like this is some sort of dreadful problem.

MrsDThomas · 04/01/2022 15:08

Its sweets. Not drugs.

Let her eat it

She's definitely allowed to work her way through it, but she thinks it's too much for her. She does also have a big biscuit tin and a Celebrations tub full of sweets. She'll get more things from parties as well so it does end up getting topped up, and most of the chocolate seems to have an 03/22 BBE.

It's just as well you don't live in my house. The size of the haul would have stopped your heart

Use it in other things. I'm making chocolate mousse with a melted Santa tonight.

She eats what she wants but thinks it's too much for her. They get biscuits and puddings at school as well so she doesn't tend to want much of this stuff during the week. I've never really had to restrict her consumption as she has quite a balanced attitude.

Brieandcamembert · 04/01/2022 15:12

That doesn't seem a huge amount tbh! Surely she can have it over a couple of weeks.

I'm desperately hoping no child ways that many sweets and chocolates in a few weeks. Months maybe. I actually do think it's an awful lot of sugar.

I really don't think giving it as a dessert sets up healthy eating practices either. I always realise on here how skewed the UK attitude is to feeding children junk foods.

Morgan12 · 04/01/2022 15:12

Oh my God! Who will play you in the movie?

irregularegular · 04/01/2022 15:13

Bit of an OTT reaction I think. Yeah it's quite a lot. I'm quite impressed she hasn't eaten it already! On that basis, it seems like she will spread it out and it will be fine. If she's not that interested you could give it away rather than bin. We were given one of those great big tubs of Swizzels sweet shop favourites that noone was really interested in and gave it away on a local site (slightly shockingly to the local pre-school, but that's not really my problem!). Someone suggested afterwards giving to local foodbank but it hadn't occurred to me they would want sweets.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 04/01/2022 15:13

most of the chocolate seems to have an 03/22 BBE.

You do know it won't explode or turn green at midnight on the 22nd, right? It may not taste as brilliant once it's past BBE date but it will be perfectly fine to eat.

Also, is it just me who thinks there really isn't that much there? Blush

Sakura7 · 04/01/2022 15:13

It sounds like she has picked up on your attitude towards food to be honest.

Boofay · 04/01/2022 15:14

My 3 year old could bosh this in one sitting.

We’ve also got a shed load of chocolates/biscuits/ savouries left over - a serious amount. I just think we’ll eat it over the next few months and not worry about it. Why are you so hung up on having it in the house?
