Disgusted by excessive Xmas treats!

PinkPomeranian · 04/01/2022 14:52

My kids are doing a final clear up before going back to school tomorrow, and 8yo trotted off to fetch her Xmas sweet haul which she had forgotten about and therefore barely touched.

Seeing it all laid out I am absolutely astounded by the amount of chocolate/sweets she has accumulated. (Even more horrified to realise that 5yo currently has a pile half this size despite receiving the same stuff as her elder sister!) This is over the last month alone. She also has two large tins full of the sweets she's been given at parties and Hallowe'en etc. I don't think our friends or family are particularly big on sweets so guess lots of little or one-off things have just accumulated.

AIBU to be a bit taken aback by the amount she's received? And what do other people do with it all? I don't think she'll get through it all but seems a waste to bin it.

’disgusted’
Get over yourself OP Hmm

mumpants · 04/01/2022 16:37

Mine are 5 and 8 too and have loads of chocolate left. It's in the kitchen now and will last a few weeks. Throwing it away would be a waste. It will get eaten little by little and enjoyed.

Tobleroney · 04/01/2022 16:38

Over a month? I could eat that in a week 😋

AnnaBolina · 04/01/2022 16:38

😂😂😂😂

If your kid doesn't like chocolate, give it to a food bank. Or a school raffle. Or drop it off at your kids school for the staff room. All options will see them gratefully received.

Ps, that's a modest Xmas haul

Thatsplentyjack · 04/01/2022 16:42

Is this your first Christmas OP?

Crunchymum · 04/01/2022 16:46

My kids aren't given carte blanche with sweet stuff they are gifted. As mentioned by about post #6, it all goes in the treat box and is consumed as treats over the coming weeks.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 04/01/2022 16:46

I am gradually throwing away the small mountain of unwanted food our (adult) household was given over Christmas. Biscuits, cakes, cheese, puddings mince pies, sweets, chocolates, crisps and lots of alcohol. We don't like them. We don't want them. Eating them would not be good for my blood pressure so it's gradually being opened and put in the food recycling bin. It's a shocking waste but I'm not going to eat rubbish just because people gave it to me.

Donate it somewhere, don't just waste it!
fairylightsandwaxmelts · 04/01/2022 16:51

I'm not virtue signalling and really didn't think a food bank would want Christmas cast-offs or loose sweets. If they'd be accepted then that's good to know, and was the point of my post.

Christ, so just stick on Marketplace or take it in to school or something. Surely it's not that hard to think of somewhere to donate it?!

Why would you not give it away? Confused

Is something stopping you from donating it to a foodbank or something?

Don't be a dick and chuck perfectly good food in the bin, ffs.

Steelesauce · 04/01/2022 16:53

Mine got way more then that. My mum even did a giant chocolate hamper for us which was in a massive amazon box there was so much Grin

It all gets tipped into the giant treat box with all the snacks and eaten over the next few weeks/months. Saves me buying it for a while.

If you want to give it away and its just odds and sods, stick in in a bag and give it to a care home for the staff. They'll love you for it.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 04/01/2022 16:54

I’m genuinely aghast someone would throw cheese away
It’s a perfectly normal food you can cook various things with
Absolute horrendous waste
And if your blood pressure is not good then you’ve obviously overindulged too much in the past so very hypocritical

DickMabutt73962 · 04/01/2022 16:55

@PinkPomeranian

Well no, I'm not really horrified but that does seem to be the best way to get a response here. Wink

I'm more surprised by the amount and wondering what other people do with it all. She really won't get through it all, and the rest of us have received our own generous amounts as well. So really I'm asking what you do with all the excess, and how to manage the amount coming in. I'd rather it didn't go to waste.

Donate to charity 😇

And you can't think of anything else that could be done with perfectly good food and drink beyond either eating it or throwing it away...?
2Rebecca · 04/01/2022 16:55

Isn't it normal for kids to be munching Christmas chocolate for months? It's like easter chocolate lasts a few months as well. It has a long shelf life. What's the rush? I'd be surprised if kids had eaten it all by now.

Yes, you are shockingly wasteful.

'Disgusted'

'Astounded'

'Horrified'

Have you considered working for the Daily Mail? Assuming you don't already that is.

I think OP is "flaunting " her choc excess and showing others "what they are missing " 😂😂😂
Joolsin · 04/01/2022 16:57

I would immediately eat the Freddo, buttons, curly wurly, love hearts and chewy lolly myself, I have very juvenile taste in sweeties, so that would take care of a fair bit of the problem. Melt down the chocolate santas for baking. After that, let them have the rest.

AuntMargo · 04/01/2022 16:57

Christ I dare not show you mine and my hubby's haul, it is literally 10 x that and we are super proud !!!

MrsBerthaRochester · 04/01/2022 16:59

That is really not a lot of treats. My mum sends a huge box every year and its full to the brim with chocolate/sweets.
There were about thirty selection boxes, tubs upon tubs of Celebrations, heroes etc.I gave quite a few selection boxes away, the kids have eaten another couple and as a family we have eaten three tubs of chocs and still have a cupboard full.
I just wont buy any chocs, sweets, biscuits etc until its used up. Im not making it into a big drama...

HappyGuppy · 04/01/2022 17:00

Oh lord you'd have a melt down if you saw what our kids got and seem to get every year.

Prettypennies · 04/01/2022 17:00

Send them to me Grin

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 04/01/2022 17:01

Jeez my kids had quadruple that amount and have demolished the lot. I let them have free reign at xmas-they’re regulated the rest of the year
