M&S Clementine Gin liqueur - yuck!?

OK, I will admit, in an effort to try and embrace the festive spirit I got sucked into the marketing of the light up sparkly globe bottle and bought the clementine version....

With one thing and another I have only opened it this weekend... Have tried it with M&S prosecco as a cocktail as well as with regular tonic water.... And I can't remember the last time I have been more disappointed in something food/drink related. It is nasty, over sweet and overly artificial. To me, it tastes really really cheap and nasty.

Am I in the minority here? Is there another way to use this that actually makes it drinkable? I have a pretty much full bottle.

YABU - it's lovely
YANBU - horrible stuff

There were soooo many of these left in the sales 😂

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 02/01/2022 18:49

How do you get a free one?!

Hankunamatata · 02/01/2022 18:49

@IPokeBadgers

Oh well, will have to get creative with it. Just realising as well that the m&s prosecco (that we bought a case of and have had before) isn't tasting great either. We definitely don't have covid or taste issues, so I'm wondering if m&s have pulled a bit of a fast one with the quality of some of their alcoholic offerings in 2021....
M&s prosecco is my favourite but I do have a sweet tooth.
HunterGatherer · 02/01/2022 18:52

Gin shouldn't be messed with.
Juniper and a few botanical is enough.

I was given a bottle for Christmas and finished it single handed! Neat! I'll have all those going spare!

RogerThatBravoOne · 02/01/2022 19:08

I haven’t tried the orange one but thought the plum was lovely!

Pinkstegosaurus · 02/01/2022 19:09

Wonder what it would taste like to glaze a ham? Or use in a dessert, drizzle over a cake? I’m sure it can be repurposed somehow, I haven’t tried it but gin liqueur isn’t my thing either.

ScrambledSmegs · 02/01/2022 19:17

It;'s grim. Got two last year in a special offer. We foolishly gave the rhubarb one as a gift, had a tiny sip and it was nice. A bit sweet for my taste but pretty nice.

The clementine one nearly made me gag.

sanityisamyth · 02/01/2022 20:08

I was given a bottle for Christmas and love it! I have it with lemonade which seems to work well.

DedafalalalalalusBloom · 02/01/2022 20:15

I second the "drink it while you've got covid" approach. I've got several awful bottles of sweet Gewürztraminer that I need to get rid of and they've been perfectly palatable this last week while my tastebuds are shot!

Mykittensmittens · 02/01/2022 20:25

Maybe I’m being very thick.

Gin - even flavoured gin (Bombay bramble, pink Gordon’s, Whitley Neil Ginger etc) are pure gins with a hint of flavour. About 40% proof.

Gin LIQUERS are a totally different bag. They are a liquer, so thick and sugary and can be drunk undilted over ice or in a cocktail. Not necessarily with tonic like a traditional gin. They’re also usually half the strength (20%) and twice the sweetness.

I’d never buy anything labelled gin liquer as I like a nice dry gin, even if it’s got a hint of flavour. Too sickly.

Bluntness100 · 02/01/2022 22:27
@Madcats yes, I'm an anytime smart pass holder and got the free gin as a 'new year' present. Also got free christmas delivery and £10 off an order in christmas week - i think they're not as busy as they used to be!
Yes, me too, although I got a voucher for ten pounds as they didn’t deliver the Yule log, so they refunded it and sent me a tenner voucher.

NormanStangerson · 02/01/2022 23:33

Might I recommend Rock Rose if you’ve not already tried it? It’s wonderful.

NormanStangerson · 02/01/2022 23:34

Sorry that was aimed at @Justkeeppedaling

Feelsunfair · 02/01/2022 23:41

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

I tried their last year’s version, which didn’t have a special bottle, and it was lovely!
Last year's clementine gin definitely had a special bottle.
DynamiteFilledRadish · 02/01/2022 23:56

I bought it because the bottle lights up and that was enough for me. Don't like it at all. The taste is so synthetic. I can only drink iy from the freezer over ice and neat so it's gone syrupy from being frozen. I won't waste a bottle of alcohol, I'll find a way to get it down Grin

ChippyDucks150 · 03/01/2022 00:01

We got it last year, probably for the novelty of the pretty light up bottle. Had it with prosecco, and it was vile, so didn't bother repurchasing this year. It seemed to sink to the bottom of the glass, so when you drank the prosecco you were met with a horrible gin sludge at the bottom

Feelsunfair · 03/01/2022 00:01

I feel like the recipe changed to be honest. I loved it in prosecco last year, so much so I bought it as a gift for someone this year. Then I tried some myself and didn't like it Xmas Blush

RampantIvy · 03/01/2022 00:04

@HunterGatherer

Gin shouldn't be messed with. Juniper and a few botanical is enough.
I agree. Flavoured gin is drunk by people who don't like gin.
LawnFever · 03/01/2022 00:04

@JammyRedRooo

Oh no I was given a bottle of this for Christmas and was looking forward to trying it!
Me too! It’s not been opened yet, oh no!
Bichette · 03/01/2022 00:07

We have some of this and enjoyed it with Prosecco, but how are you getting the bottle to light up?

FortniteBoysMum · 03/01/2022 00:07

Couldn't help reading this as dp bought me the Sugar Plum one from the kids for Christmas and was curious if any review. Reading them I think the bottle will be staying sealed. They only bought it as its a nice bottle. I did say it's not a flavour I'm likely to like. Might save it until next time the neighbours are here drinking all my nice gins with no intention to leave. It will ever get rid of them sharpish or she can drink it.

Ooh thank you, will look for that

DanceForeverUnderTheLights · 03/01/2022 00:16

Oh no, I had this for Xmas and haven't opened it yet.
