M&S Clementine Gin liqueur - yuck!?

OK, I will admit, in an effort to try and embrace the festive spirit I got sucked into the marketing of the light up sparkly globe bottle and bought the clementine version....

With one thing and another I have only opened it this weekend... Have tried it with M&S prosecco as a cocktail as well as with regular tonic water.... And I can't remember the last time I have been more disappointed in something food/drink related. It is nasty, over sweet and overly artificial. To me, it tastes really really cheap and nasty.

Am I in the minority here? Is there another way to use this that actually makes it drinkable? I have a pretty much full bottle.

YABU - it's lovely
YANBU - horrible stuff

A friend served it at her Christmas get-together. Everyone loved it except for me. I love gin but can’t stand overly sweet drinks.

StilaOnTheWrongPlane · 02/01/2022 17:41

I was given a bottle of this - thought it ok with lemonade.

I bought a Morrisons coconut and pineapple one ........ GRIM !

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/01/2022 17:41

@IPokeBadgers

Jameson Orange Whiskey?! Crikey 🥃😁

Although.... My husband did try a whiskey, marmalade and tea cocktail as seen on one of Kirsties Allsops Christmas shows and it worked not too badly, so maybe that's a way to use up the orange whiskey...?!

I might try that out on family members first and watch their faces carefully. Grin

Oh, dear, my palate must be appalling, I drink it neat and I love it, it tastes like Cointreau or Grand-Marnier to me!
I was given a bottle of Suntory Roku (Japanese) Craft gin for Christmas and am drinking that neat, too, and enjoying it very much. I'd never heard of it before and it slips down a treat - even better than the Clementine gin!

Kidsaregrim · 02/01/2022 17:47

It’s rank! 🤢

AnotherExpatKiwi · 02/01/2022 17:50

To me it tastes like an unfortunate combination of the orange flavoured chocolates in a box of Roses, and a melted orange Spangle (boiled sweets in the 1980s) combined with flat orange lucozade. I think the nearest it has ever come to an actual clementine is when one segment was wafted over the cauldron when they made this noxious witches brew.

tttigress · 02/01/2022 17:52

The Gin flavour plus orange is not a good combination.

Maybe try Grand Marnie or Countrau if you like orange tasting alcohol?

IPokeBadgers · 02/01/2022 17:53

Oh well, will have to get creative with it.
Just realising as well that the m&s prosecco (that we bought a case of and have had before) isn't tasting great either.
We definitely don't have covid or taste issues, so I'm wondering if m&s have pulled a bit of a fast one with the quality of some of their alcoholic offerings in 2021....

On the other hand, I had the misfortune to buy a bottle of Gordon's pink gin (flavoured with pink berries) and I had to throw it out as I couldn't give it away!

You are quite right and I will do that in future. I fully admit that on this occasion I was weak and the marketing department got me! 😂

I had it with prosecco and quite liked it.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 02/01/2022 18:09

I got the Clementine one for my husband for Christmas and the Sugar Plum one too. (As well as a book and a c.d.)

The Clementine one with tonic, ice and lemon is sublime.

We tried the sugar plum light up bottle gin with Prosecco. No thanks. (I think that was more to do with the Prosecco though)

MotorwayDiva · 02/01/2022 18:10

I've had both of the aldi ones and they are lovely. Not to sweet and great with tonic x

Getyourjinglebellsinarow · 02/01/2022 18:13

I've been gifted some 🤣 I don't even drink gin though so yeah it's rank!

longtompot · 02/01/2022 18:17

You could try this with the Clementine gin. I made it last New Year's Eve with normal gin and it was delicious

"I got this free from Ocado too"

At the risk of turning this into an Ocado thread, are you all Smart Pass people?

For reasons that are unclear to me I seem to be able to get free Ocado delivery slots every week, but don't get emailed offers.

FWIW Clementine juice in cartons/bottles is quite nice (at least it is from Waitrose).

IsThisNameTaken · 02/01/2022 18:30

@Madcats yes, I'm an anytime smart pass holder and got the free gin as a 'new year' present. Also got free christmas delivery and £10 off an order in christmas week - i think they're not as busy as they used to be!

IdontPracticeSanteria · 02/01/2022 18:32

I got a bottle off my sister for Xmas. Cracked it open last night.
Yes I did think it was unusually sweet for a gin.
I'll drink the rest if it but not really my cup of tea. I don't have a sweet tooth at all really.

I have to disagree- I love Tanquery Sevilla in the summer!

Nodancingshoes · 02/01/2022 18:38

I have the cheaper Aldi versions and they are both really nice. DH bought me a lemon Gordon's gin though and I dont really like that one

HPLikecraft · 02/01/2022 18:39

I bought some! Didn't particularly like it but hey the light up bottle and gold flakes were great!

DartmoorChef · 02/01/2022 18:42

I'll swap for the vile parma violet g8n liqueur that's been in my cupboard for months.

ZenNudist · 02/01/2022 18:44

The margarita idea is genius. I put agave nectar syrup in my margaritas and usually orange or triple sec. So this should do the job of balancing off the tequila .

Mmmmm margarita. Dry January Sad

pudseypie · 02/01/2022 18:44

We were gifted a bottle for Christmas and DH who even admits that he will drink anything, said it's revolting. I agreed. Far too sweet and sickly, strange flavour to it.

Malibuismysecrethome · 02/01/2022 18:44

I didn’t buy any Christmas food or drink this year I mean obviously I bought lovely food but not all this sweet, artificial yuk. Some of it looked absolutely vile and the Christmas puddings with an orange in them taste like a jar of marmalade in them. Ditto sticky toffee and chocolate ones.
