Hi,

Let me preface this with saying I do not have children myself. I have a friend who is pregnant with their first child and whilst I have agreed to get them a present that they love but couldn't afford themselves I wanted to do more. The friend is currently stressed out about money and how they will afford a child. I would like to alivate this somewhat I have decided I would love to make them a big hamper (I know you can buy hampers but often they are over priced and don't contain enough stuff) so what I am asking here is for ideas of things I can buy to put in this hamper......It can be anything that would be useful for a new parent and thinks that would be used day to day but are added costs that would help. I want this to be useful for the first year of life and am thinking about stuff like nappies and bibs all the small things that soon add up....so please put everything you found useful with your children in that first year that I can include in this hamper!

Thanks in advance :)

That's really lovely. I'd say calpol, bathtowel, size 2 nappies so she has the next size when she needs them. Use a baby bath as the base for the hamper so she can use that too, also stuff for mum too! Face masks and chocolates maybe a thermal flask for
Hot drinks.

A new mother who is short of funds will neglect to treat herself so I’d be thinking of some nice bath oil, nice slippers for hospital and something personal like an IOU babysitting voucher or dinner.

WheelieBinPrincess · 02/01/2022 16:12

Lots of white or plain vests/bodysuits , long sleeve and short, because they are the kind of things people don’t tend to buy you because they are boring, but I use loads of them and they go under everything. People tend to buy the colourful cute ones as presents but they’re not so good for under outfits or just throwing on.

A little baby nail file set. Those nails get sharp quickly!

Muslin cloths, little square ones I keep in a basket in east reach for dribbled etc.

A soft baby hairbrush.

Thermometer.

Things I couldn't have done without...

Muslins - lots of them
Ewan the dream sheep
Breastfeeding pillow
Bodysuits/vests, babygros and bibs

WheelieBinPrincess · 02/01/2022 16:13

*in easy reach for dribbles.

Helpwanted21 · 02/01/2022 16:14

This is so helpful! Thank you for all the ideas so far especially those for mum as well I'll be definitely making sure it'll pamper mum as well as being practical for baby!

Vaseline and sudocreme, no bio washing detergent, Milton

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/01/2022 16:15

Muslins
Sudocreme
Wooly hats

LouMoo13 · 02/01/2022 16:15

Nappies, muslins, bibs, nipple cream (if planning to breastfeed as it's weirdly expensive) baby bath/ body wash, baby wipes or cotton wool, nappy cream

alltalknobaby · 02/01/2022 16:17

“On the night you were born” book ❤️

Jimjamjong · 02/01/2022 16:17

Is she planning to breastfeed or bottlefeed? cloth or disposable nappies?
If breastfeeding, lansinoh cream and breastpads, perhaps a manual breast pump, if bottlefeeding than powdered milk/bottles but you would need to know if she is set on a particular brand.
Otherwise there are muslins, bibs (they make some cute ones to catch dribbles), changing cream, cloth or disposable baby wipes.

Bonnealle · 02/01/2022 16:18

Get the big muslins as they can be used as swaddles too. The John Lewis large ones are the best.

WheelieBinPrincess · 02/01/2022 16:19

Yes to hats! They grow out of them quick. At least mine does 😂

Lanoish nipple cream.

A little nightlight

JuneOsborne · 02/01/2022 16:19

Travel mug (so she has a shot at a hot drink!)
A couple of suitable from birth baby toys like a Sophie le giraffe and the lovely jelly cat amuseables.
A boots voucher
Sheepskin
A buggy clip
Baby weaning stuff. Bowls, spoons, ice cube trays.
Breast pads, nipple cream and nice bath/shower stuff for her.
Wireless headphones

Sceptre86 · 02/01/2022 16:22

I'd add things like calpol, ibuprofen, a good quality thermometer, infacol, teething powder, teething gel, baby shampoo and conditioner, body wash, lotion, nail clipper and hair brush set, lots of cotton wool or pads and baby wipes. You could include a few different brands of nappies till they find ones that suitable nany or a voucher for cloth ones if they are leaning that way.I have just had my 3rd baby and she is my second girl and I kept my eldest child's clothes so had plenty of girly stuff. What I would have liked would have been baby vests in different sizes and sleepsuits . I had kept some of the vests and sleepsuits my dd and ds had worn but babies go through so many.

Dspx · 02/01/2022 16:23

Sounds silly but the thing I found most invaluable was an organiser for night feeds the kind for sofas for magazines etc. I put it over the next to me and it was a god send for my drink snacks bottles everything you need in the middle of the night, especially after having a C-section when moving was very difficult having everything organised and at arms reach x

SmellyOldPartridgeinaPearTree · 02/01/2022 16:24

Yeah nappies, dummies, wipes, muslins, vests and babygros. Childs farm products. Yellow metamium. She will probably buy all this stuff well in advance so if you want to save her money then don't wait until baby is born to give it to her.

A well meaning friend bought me a little pamper pack with face masks, bio oil and all sorts of things in it. Tbh it's been 5 months and I still haven't had a chance to lie about with a face mask on! When my first baby was born my sister gave me a massive cool bag of food that evening from M&S and it also had paracetamol and lactulose in it! That was the best ever. The chocolate flapjacks kept me alive for the first fortnight Grin

Topbird29 · 02/01/2022 16:28

Meantime nappy cream is good for if the baby gets bad nappy rash. Is wonder stuff hey! We found a nuk (I think that is the brand) snot suctiin thing really useful as babies can't feed with a blocked nose.

Tempusfudgeit · 02/01/2022 16:28

Metanium cream - stupidly expensive and excellent stuff.

IKEA do a pack of 20 facecloths in the baby section for not much ... get two!

Astraturf · 02/01/2022 16:28

I was given a box of milestone cards and loved doing them and looking back.
Also a nice water bottle or coffee cup, biscuits, snacks, a nice weaning set - my daughter plays with hers in her toy kitchen.
I also recommend gro snugs to everything although it depends on your budget because they don't last long for the price.

Yika · 02/01/2022 16:28

Hand cream for the mum. You wash hands a lot when looking after a baby (nappies, bottles etc).

Totalwasteofpaper · 02/01/2022 16:29

This
  • A white noise machine
  • dummies (mam ones for 0-2months)
  • Swaddle sleep bags love to dream not Tommy tippee
  • nappy caddy (£13 on amazon)
Topbird29 · 02/01/2022 16:29

And for mum - maybe some handcream (I got cracked hands from lots of washing- everytime feeding and changing). The nutrogena is good. And maybe some treat foods.

Topbird29 · 02/01/2022 16:30

I meant metanium! Darn autocorrect.

georgarina · 02/01/2022 16:32

More of a gift in itself but a weighted swaddle

They are amazing at helping babies sleep
