People walking their cats on leads - NO! AIBU?

Recently, I have noticed an increasing number of people with cats on leads in my local park and I do have to wonder what they’re thinking.

Firstly, cats are not dogs. They are territorial animals and when they go out will follow a set route they have marked by their scent. This is the whole point of going out for a cat - to check it’s territory and sniff about. They don’t need ‘exercise’ in the way dogs do. Being in a place with unfamiliar smells will be overwhelming for them.

Secondly, dogs in this park are meant to be on leads, but often are not and could attack the poor cat at any second.

Finally, cats will climb when scared or run in bushes and surely they will get strangled or wound up in the collar or lead. For instance, yesterday, there was a woman with a ginger cat which ran up a tree after a crow ((but also because it was freaked out, I think). This cat was on a long, extendable lead, but obviously this got entangled in the twigs and branches in the tree and the cat was stuck. A man has to climb up to untangle the lead. Loads of people gathering around the tree and the cat was scared. The woman was going, “Ohhh ha ha, it’s the first time he’s been out!”

AIBU to think this is irresponsible cat-owner behaviour and these people clearly do not understand the basic nature of a cat?

This is in Hyde Park, by the way. Don’t know if it’s similar in other parks?

I’ve seen people using cat backpacks in Greenwich Park www.tuxedo-cat.co.uk/best-cat-backpack-carriers/

I'm guessing you have never seen this man and his cat?

I know someone with a house cat who had to leave the house for estate agent viewings and take the cat with her. She had to put a lead on to keep the cat safe, and was really embarrassed by all the looks people gave them. So maybe it’s the exception rather than the norm.

QuestionableMouse · 02/01/2022 15:02

Mine very occasionally goes out on a lead, just in the garden. She's a house cat with no sense so I don't let her out, but it's nice for her to get some sun and fresh air!

DysmalRadius · 02/01/2022 15:03

I know someone who did this - they had moved from a relatively rural area to an inner city flat temporarily, so they had a cat that was used to going outside but had no road sense and would likely bolt at the noise of traffic. I thought it was a pretty sensible idea tbh.

feyzer · 02/01/2022 15:03

Sparklingbrook - I think I have seen some YouTube videos about that man (or a similar one) with his adventure cat.

Can’t he just do it by himself? What need does he have to drag the cat along?

If you have a pedigree cat one of the stipulations is often that it will be kept as a housecat,

In that instance if the cat is harness trained then why not?

Same with cats who are deaf or are otherwise incapacitated. It's safer for those cats to be harness trained from a young age. They get the chance to explore the world safely.

It's a lovely story and as far removed from dragging a cat along as you can get. Have a watch.

My neighbor walks his cat on a lead. As I'm sure you're aware, it's a lot safer for cats to be housecats rather than outdoor cats. I'm sure if his cat was distressed he would soon know about it.

Letting a cat in your own garden on a lead is one thing. Having a cat in a lead in Hyde Park is another matter. Apart from dogs, there were roller bladers flying by. People are not looking out for cats as they don’t expect to see them. Also everyone is coming up and trying to stroke the cat and it’s too much.

I sometimes take my elderly boy out in a lead. He gets lost, as he is so old, but still enjoys the air. We walk to the end of the street, then come back.

Theunamedcat · 02/01/2022 15:06

And yet people complain when they are allowed to roam free 🤷‍♀️

dementedpixie · 02/01/2022 15:07

My cats go a walk with me without a lead/harness. I can't take my bins out on bin day without them thinking it's time for a walk.

If its a house cat and not safe to be out by itself then I dont see the issue with walking on a lead

Missey85 · 02/01/2022 15:08

My neighbour Push's her cat in a pram she also has a wagon for it on her bike

Even more ridiculous was a sight au witnessed a few weeks ago - a woman with a white ferret on a lead on Kensington High Street.

Why does a ferret need to be in that environment? It was almost trodden on multiple times.

Only done this once, many years ago when I was a child. We had recently got a new cat who was still getting used to home. There was a nice summer weekend when we wanted to go out for the day but didn't want to leave the cat alone so we took her with us. I think the destination was somewhere in the Yorkshire Moors. Whenever we got out of the car for a look round we put the cat on a lead so it wouldn't run off. My parents had an amusing photo of our cat and a sheep nose to nose on the moors, checking each other out.

freeandfierce · 02/01/2022 15:13

I take my kitten out on a lead, he's as spynx and has zero road sense. I take him to secluded places though out of the way of dogs and people. He loves it, just wanders about sniffing and clawing trees etc. When he's had enough he climbs up me. He goes out 2/3 times a week, he gets excited when I get his harness out and sits by the backdoor. He loves the car too so luckily I can take him to secluded areas easily.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 02/01/2022 15:13

YANBU, I agree with you although I know it's not a popular viewpoint on here at all.

Cats will jump, run and hide when scared and they can't do any of those things when they're restricted by a lead. They're not dogs and don't need daily walks and exercise like dogs do.

Newyearoldyou · 02/01/2022 15:13

I bet the cat owner loves their cat just as much as you think they do.

The difference is they also know their own cat which you don't. Cats have been subject to attacks and being stolen and it's gone crazy over lock down.
I can't wait see an issue with a cat happily trotting along getting fresh air and excersise. Much better than a cat trapped indoors every single day for twenty years.

Totally agree, with this. I suppose people will say maybe she doesn't have a garden. Well then don't get a cat. My cat won't even where a collar we tried from him being a kitten he just went mental.
Newyearoldyou · 02/01/2022 15:15

It's clearly obvious when animals are in distress.

They probably live in a flat with no outside space. IMO it is cruel to never let a cat outside.
