To want a tongue piercing at 39

stevieknits · 02/01/2022 09:27

Just this really! I had it done in a moment of madness when I was 17, loved it and kept it in for years. I stupidly took it out when I started teaching in a bid to look more responsible. I'm sure I've spent too long over the last few days watching 90s music videos and reminiscing over my lost youth, but I've had the sudden urge to get my tongue re-pierced. I've got young children, am on a break from teaching and I think the approach towards my 40s has hit me like a ton of bricks. As far as mid-life crisises go it could be worse couldn't it?
@thefamous5 I'm covered in tattoos too and equally don't give a fig what anyone thinks. I raised my DC to pay no mind to judgemental types either.
Yep. Would rather children covered in tattoos and piercings who are decent people and don't judge on the way someone looks than have a bunch of judgemental twats who don't have any.

Exhausteddog · 02/01/2022 12:36

I had my nose pierced when I was 18 and I've been toying with the idea of having it redone (or doing myself Blush) the only thing that puts me off is if my DD would think that made me (even more) embarrassing!

secular39 · 02/01/2022 12:38

@AllThingsServeTheBeam Ofcourse you can see it! When the person is talking however. Also it affects your speech.

Well plenty of people have never noticed mine. For years and years. I only have a small ball. And because I have had it in so long I slur when it's taken out.

RagzReturnedUnwrapped · 02/01/2022 12:40

Got mine done at 15, took it out in my early 20s as I was worried about teeth damage. I was bad at playing with it though. Hadn't considered plastic... I do miss it. But I'd probably go for nipple or intimate area next.

OP if you want it, do it. You can always take it out.

thickthighs73 · 02/01/2022 12:42

@nannybeach

I'm 71 and want a tattoo!
Go for it! You won’t regret it
thickthighs73 · 02/01/2022 12:45

@FateHasRedesignedMost

Do you think it sets a good example to your kids?

There’s infection risk, damage to teeth and gums, the fact a lot of people will think it looks disgusting and unhygienic (if you can cope with the negative reactions fair enough).

Hahahahaha what a load of codswallop
WeatherwaxOn · 02/01/2022 12:46

If it doesn't harm anyone else, just do it.

stevieknits · 02/01/2022 12:55

You should get your eyebrow done too, might as well fulfil a stereotype which is about 20 years old. Just watch your prospects fly out the window… Wink
I love this! I wasn't planning on sticking my tongue out Mel B style circa 1997 during a teaching interview but it's all I can think about now. Of course it's a very teenage/90s thing to do and thats why its appealing. How on earth would a piercing affect my prospects?

@Bagelsandbrie

pilates
Just out of interest, how does it damage your teeth?
Basically bangs against them and chips away at them!

Not always.
I’ve had my tongue pierced for 23 years and I’ve got no damage to my teeth at all.
I actually have two tongue piercings and have never had any issues with my teeth or gums.

Hyppogriff · 02/01/2022 13:02

Eww

Hyppogriff · 02/01/2022 13:07

And that’s not at the look or at being 39 (go for it if you want to!)) it’s a swueamish thing at the process really !! Age doesn’t matter for this one tho!

KurtWilde · 02/01/2022 13:08

Never affected my speech! What is this rubbish??

IDidntWearASmileToday · 02/01/2022 13:19

Do it! I'm 31 and have 9 tattoos, another 2 booked.

Bore off. Piercings look cool as fuck, and I’d much rather look at someone with piercings/tattoos than someone who wears bootcut jeans from M&S and has the cliche “Karen” haircut

Each to their own.

Depends on your social circle. And I’m not sure what a cliche Karen haircut is? Or what is wrong with bootcut jeans? I don’t judge my friends by their clothes and hair, but I find facial piercings difficult to look at; they look sore and a little grotesque to me. A lady at work has studs in her face (?upper lip) and I find it hard to look at them as they look so red and inflamed.

I don’t think to give piercings look ‘cool’ either I think they look dated and reminiscent of the Spice Girls era. When I was at school they were all the rage!

So many ways to express yourself without piercing your face and delicate body parts like the tongue.

By example I mean would you be happy for your kids to get facial piercings when they reach their teens?

Why would I care? Schools usually have a policy so for that I’d say to them to stick with ears and septum (because it can be easily hidden) until they’re out of school, then they can get whatever they like. My main concern would be making sure I take them to a good piercer and not Claire’s, to be honest.
HPLikecraft · 02/01/2022 13:31

I think that a few - certainly the minority - saying that tongue (or other) piercings or tattoos look variously horrid, chavvy, disgusting, not good, unhygienic etc. is all the more reason to get one.

It's good to annoy such judgemental twits.

Oldraver · 02/01/2022 14:14

I've generally got a clear plastic (well UV) ball on mine and I don't think anyone has ever noticed it

almay8830 · 02/01/2022 14:17

Amazing! Do it!

Mofomo · 02/01/2022 14:23

I thought someone explained upthread it was for the look of it, now people saying you can't see it?

DroopyClematis · 02/01/2022 16:01

The two friends that I know who had tongue piercings seemed to develop a speech impairment afterwards and , years later, still talk a little differently to what they used to sound like.

Maybe go for a different piercing.

secular39 · 02/01/2022 17:46

The people who said that they can't see a tongue piercing are being ridiculous. Unless the tongue piercing is towards, further, the front of the tongue (I.e. towards the tonsils) you can see it clearly. Also a friend developed a terrible speech impediment- even whilst she had the piercing, she was very difficult to understand and now that her piercing is out, she had developed a habitual way of speaking which has resulted in her having a tongue piercing in the first place. But OP it's your body.

I am literally speaking from 20 years of experience. It is rarely noted I have a tongue piercing and when someone does mention it they're surprised they've never noticed it before. I never look at someone's tongue when they're speaking so I couldn't tell you who has theirs done either.
pinkyredrose · 03/01/2022 11:54

Do you think it sets a good example to your kids?

If you want to teach your kids about bodily autonomy and that an adult can do what they want with thier own body then I'd say it was a great example.

Opaljewel · 03/01/2022 12:08

Do it. Life is too short!

LadyJJ · 03/01/2022 20:27

@AllThingsServeTheBeam my dp has a tongue piercing and I honestly didn't notice for about 3 dates.
