To want a tongue piercing at 39

stevieknits · 02/01/2022 09:27

Just this really! I had it done in a moment of madness when I was 17, loved it and kept it in for years. I stupidly took it out when I started teaching in a bid to look more responsible. I'm sure I've spent too long over the last few days watching 90s music videos and reminiscing over my lost youth, but I've had the sudden urge to get my tongue re-pierced. I've got young children, am on a break from teaching and I think the approach towards my 40s has hit me like a ton of bricks. As far as mid-life crisises go it could be worse couldn't it?

@Mofomo

It's your body your choice but what is the reason exactly, sorry to be dim, someone told me once it was for sexual reasons??!
It’s for the same reason people get any piercing; they like the look of it.

It can sometimes bring something extra for your partner, but the healing process is a pain in the neck, so you would have to be the most selfless person ever if that were the only reason you were doing it.

FateHasRedesignedMost · 02/01/2022 11:56

Do you think it sets a good example to your kids?

There’s infection risk, damage to teeth and gums, the fact a lot of people will think it looks disgusting and unhygienic (if you can cope with the negative reactions fair enough).

Lovesabadboy · 02/01/2022 12:00

I say Go for it!
I had my nose pierced at 48 and my only regret is that I hadn't had it done 30 years earlier!

No infection risk if you look after it. Had mine years and no damage to teeth and gums.

Not sure what you're getting at re. setting a good example to kids though? There's absolutely nothing wrong with having piercings Confused

Mofomo · 02/01/2022 12:02

Snotnose, so it is partly for sexual reasons?

RachAnneKirl90 · 02/01/2022 12:04

Why would you do that? What are you trying to prove?

Tryagainplease · 02/01/2022 12:05

To add, I’ve had mine done for 20 years. No infection and no damage to teeth or gums…

What a boring response. Setting a good example to your kids and having a piercing aren’t related in any way. Who cares what others think? Really? And OP is clearly aware of the infection risk considering she has already healed this very piercing.

Bore off. Piercings look cool as fuck, and I’d much rather look at someone with piercings/tattoos than someone who wears bootcut jeans from M&S and has the cliche “Karen” haircut.

I’m still in my twenties and have had numerous piercings over the years. Nipples which I sadly had to remove when I was pregnant with DD1. Septum (which I love), conch, three on each lobe, two cartilage piercings as well. I’m dying to get my nose done and I’d have an industrial if the healing process wasn’t such a bitch.

It’s all personal preference but there’s no need to come on here with such a snide attitude.

@BigYellowHat

They look horrid and chavvy.
That might be exactly the look I'm aiming for!

My teeth couldn't cope!

lonelyapple · 02/01/2022 12:12

I used to have one and took it out during a medical procedure. I always thought it was only damaging if it was metal. You can get the rigid plastic bars and balls - I thought those were supposed to be better for your teeth? I'd love to get mine re-pierced, just hate the two week healing period.

PizzaCrust · 02/01/2022 12:14

@stevieknits

You should get your eyebrow done too, might as well fulfil a stereotype which is about 20 years old. Just watch your prospects fly out the window… Wink

This ^^ as do any kind of piercings.
KurtWilde · 02/01/2022 12:17

I'm not sure where these pierced chavs are but the people with piercings where I live are alternative/goth/rock types. No sign of any pierced chavs Confused

Each to their own.

Depends on your social circle. And I’m not sure what a cliche Karen haircut is? Or what is wrong with bootcut jeans? I don’t judge my friends by their clothes and hair, but I find facial piercings difficult to look at; they look sore and a little grotesque to me. A lady at work has studs in her face (?upper lip) and I find it hard to look at them as they look so red and inflamed.

I don’t think to give piercings look ‘cool’ either I think they look dated and reminiscent of the Spice Girls era. When I was at school they were all the rage!

So many ways to express yourself without piercing your face and delicate body parts like the tongue.

By example I mean would you be happy for your kids to get facial piercings when they reach their teens?

I have facial piercings (nose and eyebrow) and lots of tattoos. I couldn't give a flying fuck what people think of me; if people look down on me or judge me because of something I choose to do to my body, then they are not someone I want to spend time with or care about.

If my children want tattoos or facial piercings when they're older (over 18, because I didn't have mine until 18+ to make sure I knew exactly what I was doing), then good on them. I'd go with them and have another one!

KurtWilde · 02/01/2022 12:26

Of course I would, and they did! My older ones are early 20s now and have had piercing for a few years. It hasn't affected their lives negatively in any way.

Lacedwithgrace · 02/01/2022 12:27

Dh got one recently and he's 43. As long as you're prepared for the discomfort and can still wear a mask with it, go for it!

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 02/01/2022 12:29

No way! They are so bad for your teeth. I took mine out in my late 20s as my front tooth was being damaged. At 41 I would not trust them not to crumble off!!
Try a less risky piercing!

KurtWilde · 02/01/2022 12:29

@thefamous5 I'm covered in tattoos too and equally don't give a fig what anyone thinks. I raised my DC to pay no mind to judgemental types either.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 02/01/2022 12:30

I've had mine for almost 20 years. No damages to teeth. Never had an infection and I am about as far away from a 'chav' as could be. (God Mumsnet is full of pricks)

Go for it op.

stevieknits · 02/01/2022 12:33

Wow what an odd response @FateHasRedesignedMost! I've never considered something as superficial as piercings (or tattoos, I've got a couple) as one of the ways I aim to set an example to my children. It would be an extreme reaction to think anyone with a tongue piercing looks 'disgusting and unhygienic' and I'd assume we'd naturally avoid each other for loads of reasons!

A tongue piercing doesn't look good at any age. Worse if your a teacher. Plus, it can damage your teeth. Why risk it? Get a belly button/nipple pierced instead.

SniggleSnarf · 02/01/2022 12:33

I've had mine in for 13 years. Switched to plastic bars as soon as it was healed. No enamel damage. I would recommend changing the bars every few months but other than that go for it!

Doesn't look good? You can barely bloody see it?! It's a silver ball on your tongue. It doesn't look like anything.
