Aibu to not like drag Queens?

And why don’t I? To me there is something intimidating and scary in the make up, and harsh glamour, parodied until it’s ugly and I think, aggressive. I remember going to drag shows long again in the 90s and they seemed to be a bit of fun and almost innocent compared to whatever it is about ru Paul et al. Nothing wrong with a bit of dame Edna from what I remember as a kid. What’s the reasoning behind this new style I wonder, and aibu?

@AppleJane

I can remember disgusting boys at school saying that.

Exactly. Usually aimed at the girls that wouldn't go out with them.

Another poster who can't seem to grasp context

A boy calling a girl fishy or describing them as fishy due to being turned down is insulting - based on the CONTEXT of the comment and the situation as a whole.

Drag queens use the term to compliment each other. Totally different context and little to no offense meant or indeed taken by most.

@Franca123

I remember being told to calm down after I got groped at a cash point one afternoon.
By a drag queen?
AppleJane · 03/01/2022 18:50

What a load of tosh @SwimmingIntoMotherhood

Sounds like you're trying to kid yourself 'fishy' isn't an offensive term for vagina.

Waitwhat23 · 03/01/2022 18:56

It's not even that it's simply an offensive term for vagina. It is implying (not very subtly) that women's vaginas are disgusting and dirty. It's misognistic in the extreme whatever the context.

Sounds like you're trying to kid yourself 'fishy' isn't an offensive term for vagina.

But it's not when used in different contexts

If I said 'your fridge smells fishy' that's not insulting to a vagina is it. Because of this wonderful thing called context.

Drag queens use the term to compliment each other. Not to degrade or demean women.

Waitwhat23 · 03/01/2022 19:09

I believe the apology for transphobia was because of backlash on Twitter that referring to genitalia when referring to women was triggering for transwomen.

There was, as far as I know, no apology in regards to the misogny.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/01/2022 19:14

From the RP Dictionary
Fishy
Adj. A term used to describe a drag queen who looks extremely feminine

It is not an insult directed towards women. It's a term used by drag queens about eachother. That's probably why I have never come across it in a drag act. It's not really used in drag acts.

Candyss · 03/01/2022 19:17

'your fridge smells fishy' that's not insulting to avagina is it

bit insulting to the fridge tho

Waitwhat23 · 03/01/2022 19:18

From the RP dictionary. The full definition as given.

'Fishy
adj. A term used to describe a drag queen who looks extremely feminine, or one who convincingly resembles a cis woman. The term is a reference to the scent of a vagina, which is colloquially likened to the smell of fish. Although the term is considered to be a compliment among Drag Queens, it is often considered to be an insult among non-drag women.'

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/01/2022 19:19

non-drag women

Hmm
TooBigForMyBoots · 03/01/2022 19:20

Thank you @Waitwhat23, I couldnt get it to copy.Flowers

Are you KIDDING?! He apologised for using an offensive term in reference to the smell of women’s genitals because it TRIGGERED men who identify as women? No apology for the disgusting misogyny towards women?

And people don’t think drag is misogynist? What does it take for it to become clearer?

SwimmingIntoMotherhood · 03/01/2022 19:24

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

non-drag women

Hmm

Women do drag too

Ignorance isn't a good look, especially when forming strong opinions on a particular topic

AppleJane · 03/01/2022 19:27

All the posters desperately trying to say drag queens aren't referring to sticky fannies. Hahahahaha Grin

AppleJane · 03/01/2022 19:28

Oh they're just talking about a smelly fridge?

Pull the other one. It's got bells on.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/01/2022 19:29

Women do drag too

They might, but those are not the ones the article cited above had in mind.

I see you fighting another corner of misogyny here. Unsuccessfully.

Waitwhat23 · 03/01/2022 19:29

Are women who do drag not referred to as Drag Kings? In the definition given above 'non-drag women' would appear to refer to women who are not involved in drag at all.

AppleJane · 03/01/2022 19:31

This is ludicrous. They wrinkle their noses and fan at their fishy fannies. They know exactly what they are doing and what they mean by it.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 19:34

Drag kings are usually women dressed up as men.

I was at a drag competition a couple of years ago where a straight female doing drag was called a 'bio queen' first time I'd heard it. She had crazy colour extensions/wig and really bright neon clothing and make up. I think she sang and danced to a dua lipa song.

Not all no

Some women do drag as women

Well they're not Hmm

Not sure how stating a fact is odd in your view

They say it as a complement

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/01/2022 19:58

@AppleJane

No, they're talking about how great other drag queens look.
waterlego · 03/01/2022 20:00

I’d like to know how so many drag queens (who are usually gay men, if I’m not mistaken) seem to think they know what women’s bodies smell like. Surely most of them have never been near a vagina since the day they came out of one?

Omicrone · 03/01/2022 20:00

Drag queens use the term to compliment each other. Not to degrade or demean women.

What the fuck are you on about?

They use the term 'fishy' because of the misogynistic trope that women's vaginas smell of fish - that's why they use the word for drag queens who 'pass' as women.

Otherwise why would they be using the word 'fishy?
