To think i'm coming down with a stomach bug?

I have reached the grand old age of 38 without ever having a nosebleed, until last week.

Tonight, I have a horrible feeling I am getting my first bout of norovirus.

Please can I have a handhold whilst I wait this out? I stomach ache that comes on in waves, really high up. A very ominous and audible gurgling from within and feeling generally ropey. Appetite is fine and I've eaten my dinner with no issues other than stomach ache and apologies, smelly trumps.

If this is a bug, how long before I know? I am about 2 hours with the pain and gurgling...

@liveforsummer

It just goes to show, when you have noro in your home, you've got to bleach and hot water surfaces, remote controls, light switches, kettle buttons... bin the toothbrushes, etc, rewash the drying laundry. I spray coats and bags in the front halll with Sterizar.

So can it just keep reinfecting you then? Not like a normal bug where once you've cleared it you're immune?

No, my understanding of Noro is that you are immune after having it for something like up to 13, weeks I believe.

I got noro first last year, went through the whole family so on e recovered I was taking care of the kids. Re-infected after 7 days a day another 48 hours of hell so can be done Angry despite CONSTANT bloody cleaning and disinfecting Sad

Oh goodness 😬. Re the study though wtf was the food being stored in the bathroom. 🤷🏼‍♀️

IncompleteSenten · 31/12/2021 12:30

We're all recovering from whatever bug is going round.
stomach bug but I don't think it's noro. Started with feeling queasy, then horrific vomiting until not even bile was coming up. None of us could even keep water down. The second anything hit my stomach I got horrible cramps.
Good news is the vomiting part only lasted a day. We're all knackered but fine. My throat hurts and I've got little pinprick marks on my face from all the vomiting and I'm in bed but haven't been sick today and actually ate which is good.

I suggest small sips of warm water continually. It is easier on the stomach than cold water.
Also get some dioralyte or however it's spelled.

It's not pleasant but you'll be fine.

Thatsplentyjack · 31/12/2021 12:34

I've got covid and I've got the shits, but don't feel sick and it comes in waves. I'm fine for a while then it hits. Maybe you should test?

Newyearnewme2022 · 31/12/2021 12:39

@TheVanguardSix thanks for that, both fascinating and horrifying at the same time.

Rivermonsters · 31/12/2021 12:41

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy shush, some people have emetophobia

Rivermonsters · 31/12/2021 12:43

Could it be dietary related? Try not to worry as worrying could give you diarrhea

I've had the norovirus once a couple of years ago. I thought I was just a bit hungover as I'd had a few drinks the night before. Boy was I wrong, I wish it was just a hangover. It was vile. Similar to other posters here, came on very suddenly, out both ends. Had to keep very close to the loo, and if I wasn't in the bathroom, I was nodding in and out of consciousness. Temperature through the roof. Only lasted about 3 days thankfully, the worst of it went away after about the end of day 2. Could barely walk in a straight line

You'd know if you had it, plus it highly infectious, so most people you come into contact with, will highly likely end up getting it as well, like in my household. All three of us came down like a tone of bricks

Stomach bugs in general are hideous at the best of times. Plus there's so many out there. Or food poisoning, an intolerance etc. Take a lateral flow, and a PCR, then maybe ring the gp to ask to get booked in for blood tests if they're negative and doesn't improve. I'm currently under investigation for celiac, as I'm having a lot of stomach problems, it really could be any number of things. Hope you feel better soon Thanks

Ah that's interesting. I actually hadn't a clue about this. But I suppose the point is, if you go and visit a home where noro was a week or two earlier, even if the family members who had noro in their own home are now immune, as an outsider, you could come in for a visit and presumably pick it up from surfaces that haven't been properly de-noro'd! I'm no expert by any means but I imagine that's the case.

Each time I’ve had norovirus (hazard of working in a hospital) it’s come on suddenly with violent vomiting, shivering, fever and a flu like feeling.

Phoenix76 · 01/01/2022 01:28

@2022IamHavingYa really hope you’re ok and also mega impressed you’ve escaped Noro virus so far (reckon you may have some immunity). I’ve had noro virus three times in my 45 year life and I fear it more than any other. It grabs you suddenly, no warning, I remember my lowest points sitting on the toilet with uncontrollable nastiness while being sick in the sink, I had zero control. There are many other stomach bugs that creep about but in my experience you know about them quickly, there is rarely a build up or polite introduction. I’m hoping for you it’s trapped wind (that has often led to people calling ambulances before), stress or an intolerance to something you ate, whatever it is hand hold from me because when we feel ill it can be scary but it will pass.

Notenoughchocolateomg · 01/01/2022 01:54

How are you feeling OP? Please ignore the snotty rude comments. So God damn judgy all the time. Flowers

Glitterblue · 01/01/2022 01:55

@2022IamHavingYa how are you feeling? I hope it didn't come to anything and you're OK!

Flowersandhearts · 01/01/2022 02:04

Hi OP,

I hope you're starting to feel better. It must feel scary to have your first stomach bug when you don't know what to expect.

A lot of posters are misinformed about Norovirus. There are lots of different strains with different presentations, some of which cause sudden vomiting, some diarrhoea then vomiting etc. Also the vast majority of stomach bugs (90%) are caused by strains of Norovirus. So it's perfectly possible that you have Noro although you would usually lose your appetite.

Diet coke / Pepsi contains phosphoric acid (anti-emetic) and might make you feel less nauseated and if you're well enough to eat ginger biscuits might help. Try to distract yourself with music or a book and know that it will pass.

itwasntaparty · 01/01/2022 02:10

The first sign I've had Noro (three times, thanks kids) has been feeling unbearably full up and unable to eat anything.

Hope you're ok now.
