Please solve an on going domestic disagreement.

My OH waters down hand soap when it comes to the end to make it last longer, I think this is ming and think he should just open a new one… he disagrees!

YABU- it’s fine to water down hand soap
YANBU- it’s ming to water down hand soap!

Is this a thing ?!!

AnotherMansCause · 29/12/2021 19:38

Use a bar in the bathroom, it's more environmentally friendly. We only use liquid soap for next to the kitchen sink. I use the dregs to clean out the sink, draining board, grill pan etc. Obviously I give them a proper wash after with normal detergent!

IncompleteSenten · 29/12/2021 19:39

What's the point?
You just have to use more. Confused

FruitMelange · 29/12/2021 19:40

I do this too- I buy big bottles of bath foam and refill the fancy dispensers. My OH thinks he has bubble baths in Radox, it's actually Morrisons Value bubble bath, I just keep topping it up- have done for yeras- he's never noticed

I feel less guilty now. Thought it was just me. A big litre bottle of body wash, 70p from the local chemist refills all the farty little bottles in the bathroom. Just have to get the right colour match and nobody knows any different.

woodhill · 29/12/2021 19:41

I only put a little bit of water in the bottom then rinse out bottle and refill

A580Hojas · 29/12/2021 19:41

Just put a tiny amount of water in it and it's fine. Don't waste the planet's limited resources! Obviously you are using a refillable dispenser and getting your handwash in huge pouches from somewhere like Method or Splosh? If not why not?

woodhill · 29/12/2021 19:42

I mean use that up,first then refill

I have my own bar soap

Mofomo · 29/12/2021 19:44

You mix soap with water any way, what's the difference

speakout · 29/12/2021 19:51

Because it splooshes everywhere if you don't expect it.
Normally it is thick and can be dispensed on a neat little blob on your hand. If it has been tapmpered with a rogue diuter it goes everywhere, on your sleeve, on the counter, half of it drips off before you have a chance to wash your hands- especially if you have dispensed the soap before turning on the tap- most of it will have dribbled off by that point- false economy.
Liquid soap is thick for a reason.
We have all been into those supermarkets that dispensed hand sanitiser so watery thaht it dribbles off your hands, drips up your sleeves, onto the floor and your shoes.
(The sticky hand gel is horrible for different reasons!)

Ewwwwwwww!

viques · 29/12/2021 20:12

OP, next time your husband is having a up of tea, a beer or a glass of wine be sure to top it up with a bit of water to make it last longer.

My granny used to mash ends of soap bars to use them up, but she was dirt poor.

tigger1001 · 29/12/2021 20:14

@MegaClutterSlut

Can he not open the new one and prop the old one up above it so it drips in the new bottle? That's what I do. I cba to water down soap
That's what I do too.

Nothing wrong with not being wasteful
WrongWayApricot · 29/12/2021 20:27

It won't work as well if it's already diluted before you add more water to wash your hands with. Don't wet your hands before soap and it might be alright. But the preservative might also not work well once it's been diluted. I think it's gross but not that gross. I could put up with it for a few days but I wouldn't choose it. On second thoughts, if he's filling the whole bottle back up nah that's really pointless. If he's just adding a bit at the end, I could live with it.

PineappleMojito · 29/12/2021 20:31

I do water down the hand wash but not for hand washing. I’ll put water in it, shake it up, then add it to a bowl of water for cleaning the pet bowls and toys.

wouldthatbeworse · 29/12/2021 20:53

My DH does this too and I hate it. We have a huge refill sachet. There must be 0.3 pence worth left in the bottle.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 29/12/2021 20:56

@melissasummerfield

My DH does this even though there is always a spare bottle in the bathroom. Makes me feel murderous!
I came here to say this! I wouldn't mind a small amount of water, but he goes too far and it really pisses me off! He doesn't even sodding use it; he uses the bar soap. Xmas Angry
IKnowAPlace · 29/12/2021 20:57

Not acceptable! Use a bar if he wants to be economical.

MrsFionaCharming · 29/12/2021 21:02

As ridiculous as this sounds, my undergraduate dissertation research involved serial dilutions of hand soap, washing up liquid, and hand gel then testing efficacy.

The answer is, it’s fine, kills bacteria just as well. It just doesn’t feel as ‘luxurious’, which is why companies make them thick in the first place.

SequinnedShawl · 29/12/2021 21:02

I only do this with the end of the washing up liquid and then immediately use it. (Throwing the empty bottle into recycling) never just to eke it out.

cherrypiepie · 29/12/2021 21:13

I add water to swill the last bits out and down put the pump back on then Chuck it after one or two uses.

It does bug me when people water it down like a quarter or half of the bottle - for some reason this used to happens at my old job- no idea why!? Like we were rationed. It was a large secondary school and this was in the staff room sink. It goes everywhere!

So I have to ask how much water is added?

I have never given it much though until now - yes it would enrage me as it would be watery useless soap.

ichundich · 29/12/2021 21:15

Just use soap bars instead.

Molehillfromamountain · 29/12/2021 21:17

My mum does this when she visits, it makes me silently fume Angry YANBU

toldgoodDog · 29/12/2021 21:20

@SweetPetrichor

We water down the last little bit so it’s not wasted. It’s not about the cost - it just seems stupid to waste it perfectly usable soap! Although we now moved to refilling permanent dispensers, so it’s a mute point…now I just top them up.
Surely it's a moot point?
toldgoodDog · 29/12/2021 21:21

Sorry, I couldn't resist.
