Science podcasts now ‘gender neutral’ about pregnancy

Listening to the ‘Brains On!’ Podcast about innies versus outies and other pregnancy related facts. Really excited that there was a new (to us), interesting podcast on science for our DC. However, quickly the podcast is all about how a placenta grows within a ‘pregnant person’ etc etc. That phrase was mentioned no less than 20 times. No mention of the fact that it’s actually a woman who has a child. Nope we are pregnant people now. It’s science.

You could always email them and mention how sexist you find it that they deliberately avoid using the word women.

Personally I think anyone who feels unable to use basic scientific terms to describe human biology is not doing a science podcast, no matter how much they think they are.

StoneofDestiny · 28/12/2021 22:50

Gawd - where will this gender neutral, gender fluid, gender not defined stuff end? Can't see how it's advancing anything at all except annoyance at people who think they can change biological facts.

Funnylittlefloozie · 28/12/2021 22:51

Its completely ridiculous. No matter how you identify on a day to day basis, having a baby is literally the most female thing you can possibly do. Women is the word for human females, anyone who is pregnant is a woman.

StoneofDestiny · 28/12/2021 22:55

In fact, taking the long view - historically it's been a very short time that women have actually been recognised as equals to men in law. The battle for complete equality hasn't even been won - and the ground is shifting so much women are getting written out of the picture already.

FFS people need to get over gender and concentrate on biological sex.

worriedaboutfitness · 29/12/2021 10:35

Okay, I’ll bite.

What would you call a man who has a womb? Or an intersex person who has both reproductive organs? Do you really not see how ‘people’ is the easiest way to include everyone?

A man who has a womb is a woman

Sex matters

Gender neutral is fine but sex is not gender

Sex neutral is also fine in most circumstances sex doesn't matter

It does with pregnancy

bordermidgebite · 29/12/2021 10:49

An intersex person with a functional set of both male and female organs is somewhat rare

By the time they are teens intersex people tend to have a great understanding of reproductive biology ( these days, UK)

Many other teens won't have such a good understanding and when using people to mean women could lead to lots of problems , unwanted pregnancies and missed cancers for a start

Because it is a subset of people
And if you can't name that subset you will never overcome the systematic problems that we have today

don't worry we tested this face mask in 100 people

Funny that it doesn't fit half the population

No we tested it on 100 people it's not our fault

A man who has a womb is a woman.

No intersex people have both sets of functional organs. None of them. They're all have either male or female cases of DSDs, and each male or female DSD has it's own specific name.

If you can get pregnant with a DSD you're a woman.

If you can impregnate someone with a DSD you're a man.

Even then, most people with a DSD are completely infertile.

Linguini · 29/12/2021 11:00

Do you really not see how ‘people’ is the easiest way to include everyone?

Excluding women isn't very inclusive is it.

bordermidgebite · 29/12/2021 11:03

People includes men

Men who won't ever get pregnant

Boys now start wondering why not because there will be no inclusive way to describe sex accurately precisely and without ambiguity

Hotzenplotz · 29/12/2021 11:06

Women get pregnant, a biological fact is a biological fact no matter how much gibberish idiots spout.

worriedaboutfitness · 29/12/2021 11:06

Saying ‘people’ doesn’t exclude women. Are women not people?

Linguini · 29/12/2021 11:07

Health websites are full of advice for "why am I not falling pregnant?"

The top common causes are
Being over 35
Having PCOS
Being too overweight
Being too underweight

I'm seeing a future where we need to explicitly explain
"Having a penis can be a reason why you're not falling pregnant" IN ALL SERIOUSNESS!!

bordermidgebite · 29/12/2021 11:11

People eliminates women as a distinct group

Now we know that ( because of sexism and sex related attributes) men more easily get into positions of power , earn more cash, are more likely to commit violence. These are all bad things , driven by sexism not merit

What happens to that knowledge if we only talk about people?

What happens to the actual discrimination?

Hint - if it's only people then we can't prove discrimination but it will happen

Justkeeppedaling · 29/12/2021 11:11

"what would you call a man who has a womb?"

Is that a serious question? Shock

Obviously, we call them womb-man (plural: womb-men). Just say it really quickly 👌🏻
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/12/2021 11:19

It's a big problem for health education. Within the last few days I saw mention of an article or campaign about prostate cancer which said it was mostly found in older people. We've seen messaging about cervical cancer saying it's aimed at anyone with a cervix. All of this ignores well established research findings that lots of people don't know the medical names for body parts or how their bodies work. The message won't get through to them unless it's in extremely simple clear English.

?? a man with a womb makes no sense.
worriedaboutfitness · 29/12/2021 11:26

A trans man with a womb then (I feel like you all know exactly what I mean when I say that)- they exist whether you agree with it or not.

YouSetTheTone · 29/12/2021 11:27

Excluding women from talk about pregnancy, maternity laws, abortion etc means those things pertain to 'people' and men will increasingly have a say on things that only impact women.

If we cannot describe things to do with being born female this will not benefit women or girls one iota.

Whatwouldscullydo · 29/12/2021 11:27

The intersex Community have repeatedly asked to be left out of all this. To not have their medical conditions used this way.

People with DSDs still have a sex. Most dsds are in fact sex specific.

There is only one sex that has a uterus and that's females. The word for female human is girl if under 18 and woman if over 18.

The terms women and girl include eveeyone who is juvenile/adult human and female of all identities and none.

Anyone who uses the term.pregnant person just sounds thick and I'd jot accept medical care from someone who appears to know less about sex than a primary school child.

Women sometimes die In childbirth. Black women are 5 times more likely to die. Their lives and deaths should not be hidden amongst talk of " people"

We cant fix what we cant see.
