Dog howling next door- nobody home

AnnaBolina · 28/12/2021 20:53

There's a dog howling next door. We are semi detached. It's been going for hours pretty much nonstop. They don't have a dog but their visiting relations do. They've been out for hours. It's a biggish dog- Hungarian viszla I think. Howls like a bloodhound. It's honestly so loud in the house that my son can't sleep in his bedroom because it shares an adjoining wall with next door and he's frightened by the sound.

Why would you bring a dog to visit and then ditch it in an unfamiliar house for half a day or more to sit on its own? Probably thinks it's been abandoned. But what can I even do about it? No idea where the neighbour is, don't know him well enough to have his number, don't know who even deals with stuff like this, if anyone! I want them to know that dog has been unhappy being abandoned all day and as a result, we have been unhappy all day!

Oh poor puppy, I don't blame him for being sad and howling if he's been left alone for the best part of 24 hours now. Hope he shits in their shoes

spiderlight · 29/12/2021 13:43

Poor dog, and poor you :(

2fallsfromSSA · 29/12/2021 13:45

Did you leave them a note last night? I would leave them another. Poor dog. I also hope he has shit in their shoes and chewed their slippers.

This is why keeping dogs is cruel. ducks

Oh for goodness sake it's not cruel if they are looked after properly.
ILoveSushi12345 · 29/12/2021 13:46

Stupid inconsiderate bastards!

They're utter bastards to go out and leave him again after you left a note explaining that he was distressed and howling.

Unless he ate the note, of course.

EyesAsGreenAsAFreshPickledToad · 29/12/2021 13:55

That’s just what dogs do. My neighbours stupid dog howls whenever they go out and leave him in alone. PITA
If he’s not hurt or hungry or thirsty, there’s nothing you can do about it.

SpanielsAreMyLife · 29/12/2021 13:59

Have you got a local FB page? Ask anyone if they know the owners of the house as the dog is very distressed and it's horrendous to listen to.

Small correction: That's what dogs do if they're anxious and their needs aren't being met.

Who wants to bet the owners are too cheap to pay for kennels whilst they visit relatives. At least in a kennel environment the dog would have access to an outdoor space and there would be staff around.what's the point of taking the dog with them to your neighbours house if left for hours on end?

We went away for a weekend recently and took the dog;we him left alone once for about an hour and contained in the kitchen;the rest of the weekend he was with us.

Arren12 · 29/12/2021 14:19

Yep as pp say post on the local community page saying how long it was left howling last night and today and can anyone contact owner. Hopefully it will shame them into coming home.

Other than that nothing you can do. I live next to a constant barking dog when the owners go to work. 6am to 6pm most days. Nothing can be done and you do get used to it eventually.

I laughed more than I should have done at that.
TonytheDog · 29/12/2021 14:22

Poor bloody dog with selfish wanker owners. I'd write another note and staple it to their front door. The dog might have eaten the other one.

RememberThePenguins · 29/12/2021 14:22

Can you contact the local council to see if they can offer any advice? Or the RSPCA?

Cakeelf · 29/12/2021 14:24

Why don’t you offer to look after the dog with your one while they are out?

Iamkmackered1979 · 29/12/2021 14:27

Aw poor dog, what was the point in taking their dog if he’s just going to be left in distress that’s sad. Poor animal some people really need to not have pets, I leave my dog but he’s walked, fed and happy before I go out there’s no barking or howling and I’m only gone 2 hours max other times my older kids are in. Hope they come back soon op

AnnaBolina · 29/12/2021 14:29

@Cakeelf

Why don’t you offer to look after the dog with your one while they are out?
Two reasons for that.
  • I don't want to.
  • why should I? I'm not even on friendly terms with the neighbour. Not unfriendly. Just nothing. I don't know him well enough to have his number, I'm not going to offer to look after an unknown dog from an unknown family member of his in my house with my children, cats and dog. That's mad.

The problem isn't with me not volunteering to care for the strange dog that literally appeared yesterday. It's them leaving the dog alone for hours on end. And I'm not prepared to solve the problem by making a huge hassle for myself and my family

That's not a normal suggestion. Especially when op has said she has nothing to do with her neighbour. Fgs it's not even their dog?!
CoraPirbright · 29/12/2021 16:18

Poor dog. My friend has a vizla and says they are otherwise known as ‘Velcro dogs’ as they like to be within touching distance of their humans at all times. So it seems a particularly bad idea to leave this one on its own.

ballsdeep · 29/12/2021 16:23

@Cakeelf

What?????

Let's just take responsibility away from the owner and give it to someone else, who they don't even know, to sort out?!

NoSquirrels · 29/12/2021 16:25

Oh poor doggo!

You really need to know how long the dog is a house guest for, and strongest words about not leaving him alone again. You need to talk to the neighbour/their relative in person.

SadSplinter · 29/12/2021 16:26

Poor dog
