Dog howling next door- nobody home

There's a dog howling next door. We are semi detached. It's been going for hours pretty much nonstop. They don't have a dog but their visiting relations do. They've been out for hours. It's a biggish dog- Hungarian viszla I think. Howls like a bloodhound. It's honestly so loud in the house that my son can't sleep in his bedroom because it shares an adjoining wall with next door and he's frightened by the sound.

Why would you bring a dog to visit and then ditch it in an unfamiliar house for half a day or more to sit on its own? Probably thinks it's been abandoned. But what can I even do about it? No idea where the neighbour is, don't know him well enough to have his number, don't know who even deals with stuff like this, if anyone! I want them to know that dog has been unhappy being abandoned all day and as a result, we have been unhappy all day!

Still howling? Post a carrot

Kindy1234 · 28/12/2021 23:33

Is the neighbour back yet?

Lou98 · 28/12/2021 23:45

I agree OP that it's ridiculous leaving a dog alone that long at any time but especially when they've been left in a different house.

Unfortunately though doesn't sound like there's much you can do until they get home since you don't have their number.
The dog may rip the note up if it can reach it and is distressed - id definitely have a word in the morning though or tonight if you see them getting home. If the dog is usually fine being left at home they probably don't realise it's been howling the full time so is worth telling them

AnnaBolina · 28/12/2021 23:54

They're still not back. The dog went quiet for a bit. I assumed he was sleeping. But now he's very very vocal again.

Popping the note through was the right thing to do. Poor dog - how is it able to go to the toilet? So irresponsible and unkind (if not cruel) of them.

Helptonight · 29/12/2021 00:04

Maybe also try and record so that if they do knock you can let them know the distress the dog was in and what you had to put up with!

Whiskersonkittens21 · 29/12/2021 00:04

You did the right thing popping a note through, irresponsible dog owners deserve to be pulled up on it.

Helptonight · 29/12/2021 00:08

My friend has a vizsla needed company and a dog walker when they were out and defo couldn't be left for long periods - I think they are known for being anxious/howlers (someone correct me if I'm wrong!)

pansypotter123 · 29/12/2021 00:13

How long have they left him for now? Has he been fed/watered?

pansypotter123 · 29/12/2021 00:15

I know you can't answer whether he's been fed and watered but anyway... Angry

IAmMeThisIsI · 29/12/2021 00:32

Can you find them on Facebook? If you can go on FB, search their names and find their accounts.. maybe? I had a neighbor who left her dog bark all night. Then the next day. Then when it started the next night AGAIN, I was extremely annoyed and I tracked her down on FB. She rehomed the dog after that because she clearly didn't give a crap about it.

Anyway, the police can't do anything. Otherwise I would suggest ringing them and claiming you've heard a disturbance and the dog etc. Dog wardens are USELESS! Honestly, don't bother. The note is great for when they're home... But that will solve it anyway because they'll be back.

So yeah. My only suggestion is to try tracking SOMEONE down on the internet who can contact them (or track them down ideally)...

2fallsfromSSA · 29/12/2021 00:33

That's awful. What time did they go out? Do any if your neighbours have a number for them. Facebook messenger? Although a bit late now, everyone is probably in bed!

GrannytoaUnicorn · 29/12/2021 00:39

Please post something for it to eat, through the letterbox. Yes they may have left food but if they haven't, then he/she will be starving

IloveJudgeJudy · 29/12/2021 01:37

Vizlas are known for being extremely attached to their owners. We have one next door who howls whenever he's left alone.

cauliflowersqueeze · 29/12/2021 02:00

What a nightmare. You poor thing. And the dog. I hope it ends soon.

Takeitonthechin · 29/12/2021 02:17

Ring 101 .... it's cruel leaving the dog that long

KloppsTeeth · 29/12/2021 02:29

I hope they have come back now. How awful for the dog. I think you e done the right thing in leaving a note.
Too late know, but I would’ve tried shouting through the letter box “Alexa, play Classic FM” in case there is an Alexa in the house (or Google, whatever you say for that) to keep the dog company.

SD1978 · 29/12/2021 03:00

It's annoying and frustrating, but realistically there is nothing you can do. It's a temporary thing, they aren't three, and you can't stop it. Maybe if they are staying a few days you can mention it to them, but if it's only for one night, it seems more a grit your teeth and get on with it scenario.

Elderflower14 · 29/12/2021 03:00

I would strongly advise NOT doing this... They could have food allergies and he really ill!!!
AnnaBolina · 29/12/2021 09:31

They came back but they're gone again this morning. No whining or howling yet but there's a really weird noise coming from the pipes between us and next door. Like someone is trying to play a tune on them. Really weird!!

JaniceBingALing · 29/12/2021 09:37

How inconsiderate, hopefully they got the note and feel bad and won't repeat.

You sure it's not the owners tapping out SOS, as the dog has got them cornered, getting its own back for yesterday.
Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 29/12/2021 09:51

Prob YouTube ddog music!

SadSplinter · 29/12/2021 12:57

Have they left the dog alone again? 🙁

AnnaBolina · 29/12/2021 13:23

Yep, the dog is alone again! I went and knocked because of the weird metallic banging noise on the pipes. Nobody answered, but the dog was in the hallway with what I assume is a bone, smashing it repeatedly into the pipes by the radiator. And the dog has since recommenced howling. Has been for the last hour.
