To find the days in between Xmas and new year depressing?

I don't mind Boxing Day but today I feel very blah and down in the dumps like I don't know what to do with myself. My daughter is at her dads till tomorrow so I'm going to the shop to get a few bits I need then home for a shower and some wine and dinner later on. However, I just feel like I should be doing something else. I feel antsy and unsure of what I am meant to be doing.

What is everyone else up to?

Another loving the nothing to do!

This morning we dismantled ds old bed and it's gone to tip. Moved room around ready for his new one arriving later on in the week.
Another dump run tomorrow.

Doing some washing, pottering, ds back to swim training this morning and training 2-3 days a day all week - so that breaks up day (although it's mostly 7/8am starts!

We will pack everything away Friday and start the new year organised. Shopping for Saturday for last few bits for his bedroom.

Back to work/college and full swimming timetable next Tuesday. So will be disorganised mess again by wednesday HmmXmas Grin

Twixtmas is the best! A lie in every day, the house is already full of food so no need to go shopping, I can catch up on all the TV I've missed in term time while sitting around drinking tea wine and eating chocolates from the lovely children at school

Hugoslavia · 27/12/2021 16:42

I loathe them too. Which is why I now take myself away to the coast to a hotel with a pool on the 27th. Have you got a local swimming pool you could go to? Any good books to curl up with? Any nice walks? It's so hard when the weather is so miserable. X

Hugoslavia · 27/12/2021 16:46

I can't believe how many people like this time if the year! I love the idea of planning a garden. I usually plan and book my holidays as well and do online sale shopping to stock up on the kids clothes for the year ahead.

SnowdropSally · 27/12/2021 16:47

I love this week. Slow starts to the day, long mid morning bubble baths and reading my books/MN while I’m in there, long dog walks, daylight riding, afternoons on the couch catching up on Christmas tv, no rushing around. We went sledging yesterday and were hoping there would be decent snow for skiing but it doesn’t look likely this week.

dementedma · 27/12/2021 16:47

Of course I read! I have 5 new books at the ready but there are 10 days to fill before I return to work. Sitting on my arse reading for all that time doesn't appeal.
I have a garden, but splashing about in cold, wet mud also doesnt thrill me much either. Exercise classes are all cancelled for the holidays. So my "hobbies" are dull or restricted at this time of year.

mrsbyers · 27/12/2021 16:48

We got married on the 28th - 9 years tomorrow so that’s now something to break up the twixmas period , sometimes go away but this year we have not long moved county so are going to have a day out in Alnwick

Mrsbadger77 · 27/12/2021 16:50

I hear you. I've always felt like that. And this year Omicron and the awful weather where I live isn't helping. Just had my first drink of the day 🍹

Lemons1571 · 27/12/2021 16:56

I have covid, feel yuck, had to isolate over Xmas, and potentially isolating at NY too if LFT’s stay positive. Marvellous. Work on4th will be a relief !

NotMeekNotObedient · 27/12/2021 18:04

I usually love this time of year - time to play with your gifts, chill out, watch films, go for a walk.

But DH decided this morning that all presents needed clarning up and had a strop on because he had washing up to do. Apparently the house is FILTHY.

Told him he can not bother taking time off next year as he's ruined the day for everyone.

Sienna9522 · 27/12/2021 18:23

Yes - because I work most of them. And I’m miserable in my job right now. I’d love nothing more than to enjoy those days in between with my family.

onwardsandupwards22 · 27/12/2021 19:11

@StColumbofNavron

Rather than do all my meet-ups pre Christmas, I have a few over the next few days.

Various admin things. I love the thread about filling in your diary/planner.

Can you link this please, I can't find it
merrygoround51 · 27/12/2021 19:35

I love them. I drank mid afternoon and watched Paddington 2, heaven

Blueeyedgirl21 · 27/12/2021 19:43

I’ve started a new tv show on prime done a several loads of washing and been to tk maxx an got some fab bargains
Been a lovely day
Just do what you feel like you don’t have to ‘do’ anything, or you could go for a walk with a coffee shop stop-off or pop out and treat yourself to a new book or whatever

irregularegular · 27/12/2021 19:47

They are some of my favourite days of the year. Almost the only days when I feel that it is OK to just veg on the sofa, read a book, do a jigsaw, play a board game. Just relax for a few days. But at the same time naturally have space in my head to think about how I want to do a few things a bit differently in the new year.

I'd hate Xmas without this inbetween period. I don't think I could cope with the intensity of the preparation and 25/26 Dec without it!

I can kind of understand why people could find them strange and anti-climatic though.

irregularegular · 27/12/2021 19:49

We're also going to the theatre to see the Nutcracker (assuming it isn't cancelled...) and doing some gentle socialising - we've arranged family walks and other casual meet-ups with friends. It's just lovely!

Hibye23289 · 27/12/2021 19:55

Im the same! The funs over, the weather is miserable,I dont want to get back to normal as I dont want to be out the xmas bubble but I also want to know what day it is and have routine. I would quite like to go on holiday during this time if I could afford to. Went on a muddy walk today and it was grey and not attractive, the wellies were filthy so had to rinse them and wash all the clothes hassle for a walk everytime

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 27/12/2021 20:07

I’m embracing the Twelve Days of Christmas, so no madness trying to pack everything in on Christmas Day, and lots of nice things that can be done (or not as the mood takes you) for the next few days. It does help that the kids are older and are happy to chill or go for walks or to the pub.

Tumbleweed101 · 27/12/2021 20:51

I love them. Nice days without any need to be 'doing' things. Back to work soon enough.

Feelingoktoday · 27/12/2021 21:43

I love these days. Impromptu lunches, walks and no pressure to do anything. I’m doing to sort out some photo books, tidy the house and apply for a new job.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/12/2021 21:44

I sometimes find them really odd too. I often work over these few days.

This week the kids and I have gone away for a few days. Having fun so far!

dementedma · 28/12/2021 11:32

How can it only be 11.30? Have had breakfast, done dishes, taken sis to station, hoovered front room, recycled bottles. And am bored witless with 8 more days of this until i return to work ( ie stay at home looking at a screen). And no. I do not want to go for a "nice" walk in the rain.

Comedycook · 28/12/2021 11:35

Agree! Hate bloody walks

I also hate school holidays in bad weather with a dh who wfh.... literally can't wait until new year is over and schools are back!

Whereisme · 28/12/2021 12:08

Thank you for starting this thread. I’ve been feeling really anxious that we haven’t been doing anything and feel really lazy. Also guilty that kids are spending hours on their laptops. However, seeing how so many people see this time of year as a chance to relax has really helped. I’m not very good at doing things just for me and always thinking that I should be making everyone else happy. However, kids at an age now where they can organise things for themselves - or not! Definitely going to use this time to concentrate on me for once.
