To find the days in between Xmas and new year depressing?

I don't mind Boxing Day but today I feel very blah and down in the dumps like I don't know what to do with myself. My daughter is at her dads till tomorrow so I'm going to the shop to get a few bits I need then home for a shower and some wine and dinner later on. However, I just feel like I should be doing something else. I feel antsy and unsure of what I am meant to be doing.

What is everyone else up to?

I have ordered lots of books to be delivered tomorrow. Will lounge about in pjs eating crap and drinking prosecco.

Grapewrath · 27/12/2021 15:39

I’m the same op I find these days boring and demotivating. I’ve booked some drinks etc with friends to break it up.

aweebitlost · 27/12/2021 15:40

I love them but I must admit I hated them before having the kids. So I can understand why you feel blah if your daughter isn't there. What do you enjoy doing by yourself? I love being outdoors (and the DC need/enjoy it too) so our pattern for these days is - special breakfast, long walk, late lunch, film, supper, bath, bed, obviously with new books to be read, toys to be played with, etc. I find it very relaxing and, as others have said, a relief.

Joystir59 · 27/12/2021 15:41

Chocs for breakfast and mince pies and Bailey's for lunch

U2HasTheEdge · 27/12/2021 15:42

I always book those days off work and use them to relax. It's so lovely.

Today I have just sat on the sofa reading my new books and having a nap. The children are either out with friends or in their rooms doing their own thing.

Tomorrow I will pick up some wool to start a crochet project and Wednesday I am out for a meal in the evening. Still have lots of lovely food and drink left to have over the next week too.

It's a time to recharge and enjoy things like reading, having naps, crafts or whatever it is you do.

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 27/12/2021 15:52

I plan and start my New Year resolutions a bit early! Last year I started a healthier eating plan on about the 28th, worked really well. This year I need to get on with tidying/reorganizing so that's what I've planned, all listed out (or I'll forget it). It's silly to sit about for a week planning to start exercising or healthy eating or writing in another week's time, just get in there early and when you are not back at work.

Joystir59 · 27/12/2021 15:54

I've ordered a fab Pair of tile nippers (I'm a mosaic artist) as my gift to myself

qualitygirl · 27/12/2021 15:55

I love them...they are the only days in the year where I feel like you can get away with relaxing, and just looking after yourself.

I love using all of Christmas smellies and watching movies...no work, no school...no commitments! Bliss!!

FabriqueBelgique · 27/12/2021 15:56

@2reefsin30knots

I love them! Days when you can just completely do your own thing (if you are off work).

There is a novel called The Book of Dead Days suggesting they are "a strange, a quiet interlude, somehow outside the rest of the year, outside time itself."

Perfect!

Also - calories don’t count!

That’s my rule, anyway.

Summersnake · 27/12/2021 15:57

I’m totally lost ,and I don’t know what to do with myself,I want to nap ,but it’s 4 pm ,so I’m likely to sleep through till morning,I can never wake up after a nap if it’s dark
I sware I have that SAD

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 27/12/2021 15:57

I'm quite happy pottering around , especially as DH is about to take the DCs out to the park when they start whining. Today I've walked to the shop to buy cheese, made toasties, changed a bed, had a nap, tidied up a bit. Going to the theatre later.

VodselForDinner · 27/12/2021 16:00

I love them too. Sorry OP!

Off work and my office is closed so there won’t be a backlog of emails to catch up on when I go back in.

Lots of lovely lie-ins.

Happy to have unstructured meals.

Generally just slobbing around a bit.

It’s great.

AshLane · 27/12/2021 16:04

These are my very favourite days. All of the dress and rush of Christmas done. My DC's always went to their dad's when they were little so this has always been 'me' time.

I've the fire on, a good book, some easy food and leftovers. I've enjoyed the radio and some films.
These are my 'get off the world' days.

Thethreecs · 27/12/2021 16:06

These are usually my favourite days. We normally do theatre and family visits that we missed over the Christmas but all theatres closed with new regulations here, everyone we had planned to visit has covid, dhs job is down 30 people due to covid (their Christmas party). so he had to go back yesterday to try cover some shifts, I wouldn't mind but he minded himself really carefully so that he could be off work this week and catch up with lots

FabriqueBelgique · 27/12/2021 16:08

@GoodMorningMillicent

I love this period. It’s still Christmas - good food, lots of TV, no work for me, and a chance to properly relax.

I start getting the dread on NYE, though. I’ve never liked it as a ‘celebration’ anyway, but it also signals going back to work soon and cold, grey January & February with not much to look forward to.

You’re right. We “celebrate the new year” but really NYE is the final binge before a sharp drop into normality and drudgery!

I feel like nothing happens in the first third of the year and I’m just waiting for Spring.

Shebangshebong · 27/12/2021 16:09

For God's sake enjoy the fact you're not at work! Feet up, telly on, midday bubble bath, drink, read, go for a walk, go for a shop in the sales. I don't understand the whining.

FabriqueBelgique · 27/12/2021 16:11

Call it an early night and enjoy it! Now is the perfect time to break the rules Grin
crimsonlake · 27/12/2021 16:12

After a hectic few weeks of preparing for Christmas, constant things to do and buy for other people...thenn the big day itself...I am now elated that I can relax, watch tv, eat chocolates and rest.

ballroompink · 27/12/2021 16:16

It makes me feel awful saying this but I find it really hard having young DCs during 'twixtmas'. The weather is often awful, I'm peopled out and just want to introvert for several days, DH who is autistic is usually quite burned out and just wants to hibernate, we have one DC who is also probably autistic and doesn't always cope well with the holidays and one very full on pre-schooler. Yesterday and today they have fought and whinged and annoyed each other. To beat the twixtmas slump we are going away for a few days later this week which I'm hoping will be more enjoyable.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 27/12/2021 16:20

I get no joy from duvet days or doing nothing. Overeating rich food just gives me heartburn Grin

I am bored and can’t wait for my sports club to go back to normal.

I walked the dogs in the pissing rain and that was my activity for the day. Can’t even go for a swim as the pool is taken over by screaming kids (until school starts again)

I only really enjoy time off when other people work and have school GrinWink

Gosh I’m grumpy Blush

dementedma · 27/12/2021 16:20

I hate these days with a passion and my mental health crashes every year, no matter what I do. All the fun leading up to Christmas is over, dont go back to work until Jan 5th( ie working from home which Im already sick of the sight of) and everyone is bored stiff. I force myself out for a miserable trudge in the rain but it doesnt use the day up.

HR313 · 27/12/2021 16:21

I agree. My OH has an old friend round and my 4.5 yr old is doing puzzles whilst her baby sister is sleeping in daddy’s arms. I’m shattered after Christmas/Boxing day and am now hiding in DD’s room for some ‘me’ time aka reading mumsnet in peace 🤣

BogRollBOGOF · 27/12/2021 16:21

We're only on the third day of Christmas Grin

Most people I know aren't working so we tend to pace the week with visiting family and quieter days... except I found myself in a PCR queue on Boxing Day so this one will manage to be even more boring than 2020!

Hollyhead · 27/12/2021 16:26

Do you not read @dementedma? Or have any hobbies? I don’t understand how people don’t have interests ready to pursue!

Angel2702 · 27/12/2021 16:27

No it’s my favourite week of the year. Taken all the decorations down today ready for a deep clean. Staying up late reading and watching everything we recorded, no rushing around anywhere it’s bliss.
