To not really enjoy hosting people ?

So finally I have the house back to ourselves. Ironic when I'd spent the last couple of weeks stressing about relatives not being allowed to come to us for Christmas. So in theory absolutely delighted it went ahead, however I'd forgotten that I don't appear to be a natural hostess.

We had people staying for 3 nights ( one staying for one more night tonight, but he's pals with DS15 and absolutely no bother). 5 additional people staying in the house including one toddler and 4 more staying at a hotel, but with us during the day.

I love these people dearly, but I just struggle to keep on top of it all. Happy enough to churn out one big meal a day, but then I think people should sort themselves out for breakfast, and I put out leftovers for tea.

It used to be after Christmas dinner, the people not going on the walk and who hadn't prepared the meal would do the cleaning up, but a couple of the people seem to have become even less helpful than usual so DH ended up doing the pan washing up myself, although I did manage to force DS to unstack the dishwasher.

So I managed to hold it together mostly, but on top of not actually helping people were trying to give me extra jobs like sorting out their tumble drying and putting on a wash ( toddler emergency).

In the end it all worked out but I find it hard to hide my frazzlement and the unsaid expectation that proper Mums are able to do all this. i did try asking the young adults to help, but even getting them to finish their multiple cans of soft drink and put them in the recycling seems to be an impossibility.

Is there anyone who thrives on hosting and genuinely enjoys this? I do like the company but feel a lot of the burden falls straight on me ( DH does his bit with cleaning and prep).

Our family love each other and get on well, really like daughter’s in-laws, too. Each unit does Christmas Day at home by itself, though. Works well. Everyone has a lovely day and meets up on other days. Just daytime or dinner, though, no overnights . We all live pretty close by so there’s just no need.

My elderly parents and MIL live hundreds of miles away. In normal times, we visited the week before Christmas for a couple of days, which was enough (again, all get on well).
None of us are extrovert and all love our own homes.

@MrsSkylerWhite our issue is we live too far away for a days visit - roughly 3.5 hrs each way. Anyway I'm calmed down now - remaining visitor ordered his own takeaway - no more house guests for a while.
I just am not well suited for prolonged hosting - flashbacks to USA relatives staying and being horrified by the lack of morning Orange juice and salad dressing ingredients.

I am feeling exactly the same!

I feel the same, my guests are leaving today.
I’ve had a lot of offers for help that have been totally unhelpful. So for example my aunt offered to prep the veg, she did so but didn’t clear away the peelings.
My mum said she would make stuffing Christmas Eve, she didn’t and only realised Christmas Day when I went to put it in the oven. Everyone kept opening the oven door and somebody put honey over the gammon and it Burnt. Some how managed to salvage a dinner. My husband produced a continuous flow of wine it helped.

Next years my cousins turn, can’t wait!

Going against the grain. We live abroad, so I love having family here. 4-6 weeks at a time. I love cooking and looking after them.

We do have heaps of space though, which makes a massive difference.

I’m fine hosting, have only MIL here this year, other guest, DS GF couldn’t come as her brother tested positive for covid. Difference is it’s not all down to me. DH did all the food shopping and peeled all the veg. We all spruced up the house with DS vacuuming the whole house just before MIL arrived.

Last big party here was NYE 2019, there was about 20 of us.

Anyone putting honey on my food would be turfed out immediately!
